Generation of the Free

(Back again, aren't we? I bring back the beloved dystopian style oneshot that I wrote a while ago. It is one of my favorites to go back and read. Everything is left the same as it was before I took it down.)

(Grian's wing angst in spite of Jazthefox16 saying to stop the abuse since im evil)

"Wings are these ugly things on hybrids backs that create a difference that is completely unfair to everyone else. They are ugly people who can hide right under your noses. It is like every nightly program before you go to bed young one, you see a person who is ugly with these wings. They are always the evil characters in these shows. Do you remember seeing them? Turn back to your parents and nod your head if you have." Grian turned back to his parents, nodding his head, he saw this program every night, it was enforced unless he was sick. "These hybrids are just like that character. They are rude, and mean. They can even hide in plain sight. If you know of anybody with wings, tell your parents and we will take care of them, make them good again. Good night children, make sure to have sweet dreams after your nighttime bath." The TV flickered before the anthem turned on, the flag waving on the screen. Grian and his parents stood up, pledging their allegiance and saluting it before the TV flickered and the parent program turned on.

"Alright dear, it is bathtime now." His mother said, taking the six year old's hand in hers. She was closing the blinds and covered the mirror along with anything in the bathroom before helping Grian take off his clothes. She locked the door and covered the handle before turning back to him. "You can relax." She said as he sighed, his wings popping out. He got into the tub, his mother washed his hair and wings carefully as he looked at the covered bucket of bath toys.

"Mummy, why can't I play with the bath toys?" He asked as she sighed.

"I am afraid they might be chipped or have a camera inside. I am sorry but you can play with the bubbles." He agreed, slowly popping the bubbles. The covered speaker went off in the bathroom, the two of them looked at it.

"Remember to talk about tonight's program, it was very informational. Good night, Grian and Emily." The speaker clicked before they sighed.

"What did you think about the program tonight?" She asked softly as Grian sniffled.

"Mummy, am I ugly?" He cried out as she shook her head and hugged him towards her.

"No baby, you are beautiful. One day you will be able to show everyone that you are beautiful, just not now." She whispered as he nodded his head. They continued bathtime as normal.

-----

"Darling, tonight is a checkup." Grian's father said as he knocked on the door, his mother just nodded her head before quickly dressing the child. They walked out into the living room when a knock was at the door. The door was opened and the robot enforcer was outside.

"Hello Charlie, Emily, and Grian. Is tonight going as expected?" The robot asked politely. Charlie nodded his head, wrapping his arm around his wife who's hands were on Grian's shoulders.

"Everything is going alright, we had our dinner, watched the children's program with Grian and he had his dinner. Everything is right on schedule." His father said with a smile as the robot nodded its head.

"Grian, what have you learned from tonight's program?" It asked as Grian gave the robot a big smile.

"Hybrids with wings are evil, ugly, and I have to tell mother and father if somebody had them." He said proudly as the robot gave a smile and ruffled his hair.

"He is learning excellently. I believe it is now time for bed, I will leave you to that." The family and robot saluted to each other, giving the chant, before relaxing. As Grian's mother took him to bed, he overheard a bit more of the conversation between the enforcer robot and his father. "Why has Grian not been playing with his bath toy? Not playing with them is against protocol." He couldn't help but be in fear for his father.

-----

"People with wings..."

"Should be converted." The class finished, all smiling brightly. Grian stood there in his school uniform, listening and following as he was supposed to.

"Good, we will now learn about other groups and hybrids who must be converted." The students all sat down and another program played. It talked about anyone with mental 'problems' or having anything different than other people. Grian felt a pang of sympathy, where did everyone who were being converted go? He was too afraid to question. The film was finished and the teacher stood in front of the group again, smiling. "As you know, every person has to get an assigned job whether you like it or not. There are teaching roles, the program producers, guards, hunters, and anyone in between. The higher positions are held by our higher ups. Praise them."

"Praise them." The class proceeded to say, bowing their heads slightly.

"Most of you will go into patrol, hunters, enforcers, and protectors. After the higher ups got to their rightful place, there was a lack of humans to hold these rolls. This is what this generation is for, to replace the robots who are breaking down. Any questions?"

"When will we get our assigned roles?" Grian turned to see it was Mumbo, his parents were considered higher ups. He knew that the taller boy just wanted to ask so others would know.

"Good question, Mumbo. You will each be getting assigned in a month. After that, each of you shall train to be compatible with you work that is chosen specially for your abilities. We will-" The teacher was stopped by an alarm and robot protectors walked into the room.

"There is a person going to be converted walking past the school, we advise the class to stay inside until the alarms turn off." The banging of alarms echoed in Grian's head even after class and school finished, even when he watched the nightly program and went to bed. All he could hear in his mind was screams.

-----

The students all stood in a line, each going into a booth before coming out with what their role will be for the rest of their lives. Grian could feel the anxiety bubbling in him, he really hoped for something like a farmer or anything that didn't seem too involved with the government.

"Are you scared?" Grian turned to Mumbo who was behind him patiently in line.

"Why should I be scared? The higher ups, praise them, take care of us. I know my role will fit me perfectly." Grian replied, gulping the lump in his throat down.

"Mother and father said they would get me and one chosen person the best roles there are." Mumbo told the scared boy nonchalantly.

"Who did you choose?" He asked, anxiety rushing through his head.

"You." He felt as if he could throw up as he was led to the booth next. Grian walked into it, looking around before standing next to the chair. He saluted the people before they saluted back and signaled that he could sit down. He sat back into the chair, trying to relax himself enough but not letting his wings out.

"We looked at all of you scores and decided you are best chosen for Converter." His heart dropped, he felt as if he couldn't breath. "With your intelligence, there should be no problem. Welcome to the secondary higher ups, bless you." Everyone saluted and he saluted back.

"Praise you." He told them before walking out. Each step was painful as he made his way back to the classroom.

"Hello Grian, what did you get?" The teacher asked as Grian opened his mouth before putting on a smile.

"The higher ups blessed me with Converter, praise them." He said, hoping his lack of enthusiasm was hidden in his voice.

"Praise them and bless you." The teacher said as they each gave each other a salute. He sat back in his chair with a sigh, watching the film on what was going to happen next.

-----

"Your son has gotten the role of Converter." Grian's parents both had a look of proud but he knew them, they were trying to hide their concern and fear over his life. He stepped inside of the house as they saulted the robot. The door closed and his parents hugged him, pulling him to them tightly. He was led to his room where they quickly hid the cameras and microphones.

"It's going to be okay, just take a deep breath." His father told him, cupping Grian's cheeks. He couldn't help but wince at the scar he could see on his father's neck from punishment when Grian was younger.

"Just continue to look up and don't listen to them. We love you so much." His mother softly whispered, kissing his cheek.

-----

"Everyone will soon be assigned to a spouse." Grian sighed, he knew it was coming some time. He knew his parents didn't love each other romantically, they were chosen for each other, but they did love each and Grian. Soon he would live in his own house with a wife, and then they would get a set date to have a child. "We will watch this program on it." Grian sighed but watched. He couldn't help but notice that Mumbo looked bored watching the film. He got the position of Hunter, it is also on the secondary higher ups. Nobody knew the specific job, similar to Converter but it was important.

The only reason Mumbo and Grian were in the same class was that this was the lifestyle class, every other is based on their actual roles.

Class whizzed by and Grian got up after saying the chat and saluting. Meeting Mumbo in the hall.

"Hey Grian, I want to introduce you to Iskall." The two saluted each other and nodded their heads. "Grian is a Converter and Iskall is an Enforcer." The Enforcer class was below the secondary higher ups but higher than commoner level.

"It is nice to meet you but I need to go to class." Grian polietly said, Iskall nodded his head before saluting.

"Bless you." Grian winced internally, it sounded so weird but he needed to get used to it or he could get in trouble.

-----

Before getting a chosen spouse, DNA has to be taken to ensure the child would be healthy once born. Luckly, having wings couldn't be seen through DNA.

Grian stood off into the line with all the other boys and the girls were in a seperate line. He felt the anxiety in him rise again, he could never hide his wings from his spouse. He was going to be stuck with them hidden.

The line moved quickly and soon, he was next. He stepped through the curtain and watched another girl walk in through the opposite side. They turned and saluted the higher ups before saluting each other. They sat down as the higher ups began to talk.

"You two have been chosen to be spouses. Since you two are adapting to your roles well, you will move in together in a week and you will try for a child exactly a year from now. You will have a limited time unless there are complications." Grian and the girl nodded their heads ackwardly. "Both of you are Converters. We are allowing you two to go to Grian's house and learn more about each other."

-----

Time passed quickly, they moved in together, Grian saying goodbye to his parents for now until he is permitted to see them again. They both graduated out of their classes at the same time, getting their jobs immediately.

"This dinner is amazing darling." Grian complimented as Alison nodded her head. They finished their meal quietly, both were still very nervous and ackward around each other. Soon, it was time to watch the program on TV. They sat down, both on opposite edges of the couch. The TV shifted on and they watched silently.

"Couples are usually very ackward at first but if you follow these procedures, you can become more comfortable." Grian sighed, all of the programs were targeted propaganda forcing and teaching each person and family how to live 'successfully.' They watched and followed procedures and photos, Grian wrapped his arm around her shoulders and Alison was curled up to him.

"Is this alright?" Grian asked softly as she nodded her head slowly.

"It is a bit new and weird but we have to listen." She quietly said back, eyes still glued to the screen.

"You know they are going to be targeting us soon on how to... have a child, right?" He whispered as Alison hummed and leaned her head on his shoulder.

"I'm scared..." she admitted quietly as he squeezed her shoulder lightly.

"So am I...."

-----

"Hello Grian and Alison." The enforcer greeted, the couple giving her a wave. "Is everything going as scheduled?" She asked as Grian nodded his head with a smile.

"Yes, everything is going great. Our jobs are stable and we have conceived a child." Grian wrapped his arms around Alison's hips like they saw in the films. The enforcer smiled and wrote on a clipboard.

"Congratulations, that is a month after you were permitted." They nodded their heads, gave their salutes and chants before the door closed. Grian sighed, letting go of Alison and running a hand through his hair.

"Is everything alright Grian?" She asked him softly as he gave her a sweet smile.

"Yeah, I am just a bit agitated." Being a Converter brought him stress. He found out what it really meant.

Death.

-----

"How many were converted today?" Alison asked Grian as he shook his head, looking down at his dinner.

"At least thirty or I would get in trouble." She gave him a pitying look, they both hated the job since they experimented on people and then brutally murdered them once finished. They found out what was really in their food from it. Since they knew, Converters and higher ups and permitted to be vegetarians if they pleased. "Hey, I think I lost one of my slippers in the room. Can you help me find it?" He asked, looking slightly at the cameras. She nodded her head, seeing where he was looking before they walked. They hid the cameras and silenced the mics, leaving them unknown.

"What did you want to tell me?" Alison asked as Grian sighed.

"Please don't tell on me..." he stripped his button up shirt, something all males in his class had to wear. He let out a sigh, relaxing his back as his wings popped out. Alison gasped as he suddenly got a pang of fear. "Please..."

"I would never. I know what they do to... them and I don't want that to happen to you." They sat on the bed, Alison's bump slightly in the way.

"I am worried the same might happen to the baby." He whispered, head in his hands.

"Hey, it's not your fault. Plus, I don't think that is the reason they are converted. All of them have been polite and not like the programs said when we were younger. You are nice and handsome, unlike everything they taught us. I would he proud if this baby would be like you." She whispered as he nodded his head.

"Thank you..."

-----

Their first baby turned out to be a hybrid. Immediately taken by the enforcers to the child Converters. They never got the baby back.

"You have at least two weeks." The couple nodded their heads as the enforcer walked away after a month since their first born was taken.

To say Grian was terrified was an understatement. He didn't want to take any chances, always hiding his wings and making sure to say everything correct. He followed every rule, even tried to be a more loving husband to follow guidelines. Alison and himself didn't love each other, only cared for each other's wellbeing and would do anything to keep the other safe.

-----

After another year, their 'healthy' and 'good' child was born. They got to visit their parents, showing the newborn off. More years passed and their son grew to be six years old.

"Time for you bath." Alison told their son, Alexander." She led him to the bathroom and Grian just sat on the couch with a sigh. He perked up when there was a knock on the door. He got up but not before looking at the calendar, it wasn't the correct day for an enforcer to come by.

"Hello Grian." He was surprised to see Iskall and Mumbo behind him.

"Hello Iskall and Mumbo." He saluted but they did nothing.

"We have been called down under suspicion that you have done something wrong." Grian could barely breathe as he gave a nod and smile.

"I don't recall doing anything wrong, I apologize if I did."

"Can we look around?" Iskall asked as Grian stepped aside, there was nothing to hide in the house, only hidden in his back. The two checked the house, Alison and Alex walking out to see the two.

"What is wrong dear?" Alison asked as Grian gulped.

"Apparently I have been reported for suspicion. They will be checking the house so we can't have Alexander go to be on time." He explained as she sighed. The three of them sat on the couch as they watched Mumbo and Iskall. Grian gave a little sigh, he knew this was a setup. "Mumbo, Iskall, can I go and give a call to my mother and father? I have to talk to them about our next visit." They nodded their heads as he walked out of the room into his bedroom. The door was locked as he called.

"...Mum, dad, I have been caught." He said quietly, his voice shaking. "I am going to be taken away, please help Alison take care of Alexander. Thank you for saving me all these years." He whispered, crying softly as they did the same.

"We love you and will miss you. Show them how beautiful you are..." They told him as he ended the call and got himself collected. He walked out of the room with a smile.

"Have you found anything?" He asked the two as Mumbo took out a tazer and Iskall brought a pair of hand cuffs.

"We already knew before we arrived. You are being taken to be converted. Usually, only Enforcers are used but since you are a Converter yourself, the Hunters are used." Before Grian knew it, he was slammed to the ground, banging his head and tasting blood. He heard a scream from Alison and Alexander as they watched in terror. He winced, he hated for them to see him like this.

"Please take the child out of this." Mumbo told Alison but Alexander reacher for Grian.

"Daddy!" He whimpered as Alison covered his mouth and pulled him towards her.

"Really Grian, not teaching your child right?" Mumbo asked as Grian spat some of the blood out.

"I won't train him like a dog, he will live in a generation of freedom unlike us. We love him and calling me 'father' doesn't show that." Grian bit out as Mumbo growled. Soon, Iskall handcuffed Grian. Before they could capture him, he ran over to Alison and Alexander, giving each a kiss on the cheek. "Take care of each other, I love you." He ran out quickly into the street and screamed. Soon, people ran to windows as warnings appeared on screens. Grian knew that Mumbo and Iskall didn't have time to alert the street not to go outside. He showed his wings, ripping his shirt and feeling the breeze on them. Mumbo and Iskall ran out, tazing him to the ground, causing him to collapse. The street was filled with surprise and horrified gasps and screams at the scene, the street knew Grian as a kind a respectable man but to find out he was a hybrid was shocking.

-----

"P-please, we are friends." Grian begged both Mumbo and Iskall as they looked each other. Iskall walked away as Mumbo stayed put. "You know what happens after this." His voice shook as he sobbed.

"There is no excuse, you are a hybrid. I trusted you and this is what you deserve. I hope your end is painful." Mumbo bit back, walking away and not looking back as Grian was pulled away, sobbing and screaming as he was brought into the facility.

-----

Grian was tortured for two days, experimented on and then killed. It was longer than most deaths but his fellow Converters had sympathy. They didn't want to but they couldn't disobey orders.

He was killed but it wasn't in vain, news of him dying was spread and a revolution began. There was going to be no more pain.

It was the generation of the free.

(Oof I know there is a lot of just made up characters but I kinda needed it since it would be weird to make other Hermits his parents, spouse, and child in this AU. It was kinda bad and I got so tired and bored at the end. But yeahhhh it is kinda angst, not as much as I wanted though.

This is also kinda based off of the Dystopian Animated Short Films made by Dead Sound, I highly recommend you check them out if you like dark, older style animations with stuff that looks similar to propaganda.

Anyways, this isn't as dark and sad as I wanted it to be :(

Im tired now byeeee)
