Hope

He knew as soon as he heard the tell-tale rip that he wasn't surviving the fall.

Grian had gone on a fly around the server to relax and clear his head, not bothering to repair his elytra beforehand. He didn't think he would go out too far, or be gone for too long, but as he started to plummet to the ground he began seriously regretting his assumption.

A scream tore from his mouth as he barreled to the ground below, squeezing his eyes shut and bracing for impact.

The man landed hard, his legs buckling under him and sending him rolling. He slammed his arm into the ground and something let out a 'pop' before forcing him to a rough stop with the side of his head hitting the ground.

Grian let out a low groan as the world went dizzy and pain shocked through his body. He... wasn't dead? He just barely survived.

He blinked a little, trying to get his bearings. It felt like a hammer was pounding on his skull and something in his left arm was probably dislocated. He couldn't move his legs much without them shrieking in pain.

He didn't realize he was crying until his vision went blurry. He quickly wiped the tears away and shifted so he could reach his communicator. He had the device strapped around his injured arm, so at least he could still type.

That is, if his communicator wasn't broken!

Grian let out a small wail, staring at the damaged screen. He couldn't message anyone for help, or even see his coordinates.

With a shaky sigh and a whimper, he lay back down and let his eyes flutter closed. His head hurt too much to think and his body hurt too much to move. Why did such a peaceful flight have to turn into this?

He lay still for a few minutes, silently crying and praying that the pain would die down, at least slightly. Soon, however, he realized that it wouldn't just go away like that.

He had to get home.

Grian took a deep breath and slowly began trying to sit up, wincing at the sparks of pain in his head and body as he did so. He didn't quite get all of the way up and he had to lean on his good arm for support, but he got a chance to look around.

The sunlight hurt his eyes a bit as he scanned his bland surroundings. There were no signs of other Hermits anywhere.

How far out did he fly?!

Y'know what? It's ok! He could just put his elytra in his enderchest and... find a cliff or ravine to fall off of. Boom, back at his base with nothing-

He glanced at his inventory. No enderchest.

-lost...

His heart sank.

No, he couldn't lose hope yet.

'Think, Grian, think!' His perpetually pounding head was making it hard to.

His inventory was nothing much. He had more elytra at his base. If he could just find a good drop, this whole nightmare would be over with.

Grian shifted and tested putting some weight on his legs, only to be met with an inferno of pain. He yelped and winced, accidentally dropping himself back onto the grass again.

Ow, ow! Bad idea!

He heavily sighed. He couldn't give up yet. He could use his good arm to drag himself to a cliff, maybe?

It was worth a shot. It would be easier with both arms, but he didn't know how to properly relocate his other arm (or even if his diagnosis was correct in the first place).

Grian tried, but he hadn't even hauled himself more than a meter before his strength was gone.

The man lay back down. His tears didn't fall quietly anymore.

He couldn't help himself and he couldn't call for help. He let out a loud sob, wincing as it sent a wave of pain through his head.

Maybe someone would fly by and see him? He couldn't be too far from the other Hermits. Someone could still find him...

The sun was starting to dip lower in the sky.

Someone could find him... Right? He couldn't give up hope yet...

He couldn't...

Darkness

The sun had barely dipped below the horizon and the night was already getting cold.

The bedroom was dark and the only heat was shared between their bodies as Doc and Bdubs snuggled together.

Bdubs' eyes searched through the darkness but could barely make out his partner's face, the hybrid's robotic eye letting out the faintest red glow.

With a small hum the man weaved his arms around Doc's neck and hugged him closer, illiciting a small chuckle from him. Doc brought his hand up to softly caress Bdubs' cheek.

This was one of the best ways to end a day. It was peaceful, cool, and quiet, and they were together.

Bdubs tried to get closer again, accidentally bumping their noses together.

"What're you trying to do?" Doc asked softly.

"'M cold."

"Want me to get a blanket?"

"I don't want you to get up, though!"

The hybrid let out a light laugh, carding his fingers through Bdubs' hair before wrapping his arm around the man's torso.

Bdubs squirmed a little until he was snuggled up to Doc's neck, one leg hooked around his with their bodies firmly pressed up against each other. The shorter man let out a content hum, closing his eyes and just breathing in his partner's scent.

Earthy with a hint of steel. A smell that had come to remind him of home.

Doc gently ran one hand up and down Bdubs' back, the other absentmindedly playing with his long, messy locks. The man practically melted into the touch, soaking up every bit of affection his partner gave him like a sponge.

"I love you," Doc softly purred.

"Love you too."
