Rewrite The Stars (Beetho)

I wrote a songfic!

A Beetho songfic!

To a sad song!

I have no regrets!

I recommend listening to the song as the characters are singing it, it adds to the effect SO MUCH RAAAA-

Warnings are homophobia and crying/breakdowns.

Setting is Highschool AU

WC: ~1390

Enjoy!

Beef smiled as he walked the halls of his school. A year and a half here had given these halls a familiarity that was oddly comforting. The way the corridors turned. The memories practically pasted on the walls. The thought of the feeling of his fingers tracing the brick for the first time. It was all familiar to him. Beef approached a billboard that was hung near the entrance. It had papers posted on it advertising clubs, school events, and various reminders.

Beef's eyes skimmed the board, looking for anything or interest. And then...

Musical Talent Show

Come one, come all, to Mindcrack Highschool's first annual 'Musical Talent Show'!

What is this?

Speeding through the rest of the flyer, Beef discovered that it was an event to show off one's musical talent. Obviously.

An idea formed in Beef's head the more he read. Possibilities spun in his head like spiderwebs, stopping any and every other thought.

I'm so participating in this, he told himself with a grin. But not alone.

"This is a terrible idea," Etho told him with a sigh. Beef rolled his eyes.

"Not really," he remarked. "You can sing. I know you can, I've heard you! And so can I."

"Duets are fun, and we've done them before," Etho agreed. "But this song? Why this one?"

"Representation," Beef explained. "You can see it too."

"But... well... I'm not-" Etho stuttered.

"I know," Beef smiled. "But still. It's just about the image. Acting!"

"Fine," Etho mumbled. "Only because it's a real problem."

Beef's grin was worth it.

"Hello everyone!" Beef's voice boomed out over the auditorium. There were some cheers and yelled words from the audience. He gave a quick introduction, then stepped back from the mic. He slipped down the smaller, but still powerful, microphone that was a headpiece, extending near his mouth to enhance his voice. Etho also wore one, so that they'd be able to be heard.

The two took their positions, and right before the music started, Beef mouthed a quick 'Have fun with it' to Etho, who nodded.

The lights dimmed slightly, and the show started.

"You know I want you," Beef sang the words, his voice crisp and clear. "It's not a secret I try to hide."

"I know you want me," he continued, extending a hand to Etho. "So don't keep saying our hands are tied." Beef closed his fist, pulling it in dramatically. "You claim it's not in the cards, and fate is pulling you miles away, and out of reach from me." It's all coming together. Just like we planned this out...

"But you're here in my heart, so who can stop me if I decide, that you're my destiny?"

He's beautiful.

Wait, what?

Beef shook away the thought, unsure of where it had come from.

"What if we rewrite the stars?" he continued the song. "Say you were made to be mine. Nothing could keep us apart! You'd be the one I was meant to find. It's up to you, and it's up to me, no one can say what we get to be. So why don't we rewrite the stars? Maybe the world could be ours tonight." Beef extended a hand to Etho, his face hopeful.

Now it was Etho's turn.

"You think it's easy," Etho's voice reminded Beef of silk, and he pushed Beef's hand away, like they had planned. "You think I don't want to run to you. But there are mountains, and there are doors that we can't walk through." The music sped up, matching Etho's gorgeous voice.

"I know you're wondering why, because we're able to be, just you and me within these walls. But when we go outside you're gonna wake up and see that it was hopeless after all." Etho laced his voice with sadness, setting up a perfect act.

"No one can rewrite the stars," his voice took Beef's breath away. "How can you say you'll be mine? Everything keeps us apart, and I'm not the one you were meant to find. It's not up to you, it's not up to me, when everyone tells us what we can be. How can we rewrite the stars? Say that the world can be ours, tonight."

Showtime.

The pair of them went back-to-back.

"All I want is to fly with you," their voices combined. "All I want is to fall with you!"

"So just give me all of you,"

They spun around to face each other.

"It feels impossible!" Etho acted doubtful, his voice carrying the emotion of the song perfectly.

"It's not impossible!" Beef countered, a smile growing on his face while Etho fought back his own.

"Is it impossible?"

"SAY THAT IT'S POSSIBLE!"

The crowd exploded in cheers.

"How do we rewrite the stars?" Etho and Beef's voices melded together perfectly, their enhanced volume overpowering the crowd. "Say you were made to be mine!"

"Nothing can keep us apart!" They interlaced their fingers, moving across the stage. "'Cause you are the one I was meant to find! It's up to you, and it's up to me! No one can say what we get to be! And why don't we rewrite the stars? Changing the world to be ours..."

They faced the crowd together as the song slowed to an end and bowed, their hands still locked.

The rest of the school went nuts.

The act was over.

The two of them walked off-stage, proud of their performance.

The next day wasn't quite as good as the last.

Etho and Beef were walking through the hallways, chatting about last night, when...

"Hey, gays!"

Etho and Beef whipped around to the voice. It was taunting, mocking.

"How does it feel to be abnormal?" the kid asked with a snicker. Beef rolled his eyes, clearly unfazed.

"Back off, homophobe," he spat out the word like rotten flesh. "And for your information, neither of us are gay. Or at least, I'm not. Get a life of your own before assuming things about other people's." The other kid grumbled something under his breath and shoved past Etho and Beef.

Beef squeezed Etho's shoulder and told him something, but Etho's mind was miles away.

Etho couldn't focus for the rest of the day.

It had been a couple of hours since they were approached, and yet...

Beef's voice echoed in his head, over and over again.

"...neither of us are gay."

"Or at least, I'm not."

He definitely won't like me back now.

So much for rewriting the stars.

The stars are right.

Etho felt like he couldn't breathe.

He quickly excused himself and made his way to the nearest bathroom, collapsing inside a stall and letting his tears spill over. He always liked the fact that the floors were clean in his school's bathrooms, but he found a new appreciation for the hygiene today.

He's not gay.

He doesn't like me back.

Etho sniffed and covered his face in his hands. He knew Beef was allowed to like whoever he wanted.

That didn't make it hurt any less.

Maybe even more.

A knock on the door.

"Etho?"

"Yeah?"

"You're crying,"

"N-no-"

"I can hear it. Can I help?"

Etho sighed and unlocked the door, cursing his voice for giving him away. Beef gasped softly, then pulled Etho up and into his arms.

"What happened?" his voice was a murmur in Etho's hair. "Or should I guess?"

Etho pressed his lips together then nodded.

"Was it something someone said to you?"

"Sort of, but they didn't mean it,"

"...was it me?"

"...yes."

Beef's grip tightened on Etho.

"Whatever I said, I didn't mean it,"

"Yes, you did," Etho mumbled. "Because it wasn't about me. It was about yourself." Etho sighed.

There was no hiding it anymore.

"Beef... I'm gay,"

Etho didn't have to look at Beef's face to see the realization painted over it.

"I said I wasn't," he said slowly. "And... oh."

"There you go," Etho winced. "Sorted it out."

"Etho, I'm sorry,"

Etho expected him to follow it up with a 'but I'm straight'.

He didn't expect Beef to say,

"I'm so sorry I lied to you."

"W-what?" Etho stuttered, pulling back to meet Beef's eyes.

"I'm sorry I lied to you and caused you all this pain," he whispered. "Although I lied to myself too."

"All I want is to fly with you," Etho murmured the lyric, although he wasn't singing. "All I want is to fall with you."

"Then let's rewrite the stars,"

And then Beef's lips were against his and everything was perfect for a couple of seconds.

Then...

A voice.

A voice that they hadn't heard all day.

A voice that belonged to neither of them.

"This is the cutest thing. I thought it was all an act!"

SCUD-

The voice was NOT the jerk from earlier. It's one of their friends. Don't worry :)
