Flowers for Fake Friends
It was a quiet day in Ren's garden center, he was just bobbing around doing small tasks. He had his back turned to the door when he heard the bell jingle and foot steps towards the counter.
He turned around with a smile, about to say welcome when he jumped seeing an angry blonde slap twenty dollars onto the counter, "what is the most passive aggressive way I can say F-you in flowers?" He demanded. In Ren's shock, he took a moment to note the boy's features.
He had stunning golden brown eyes that were lightly covered by sandy blond hair, he was currently wearing a blue shirt with black suspenders and black jeans, red and blue headphones around his neck.
"I- well, depends on what its for," he managed to get out.
"My friends. Taurtis picked Sam's side over mine now they aren't my friends," he sighed, pushing his fringe out of his eyes.
"Then I would suggest geraniums, which stand for stupidity," he nodded, "foxglove which would stand for insecurity, meadowsweet which is uselessness, yellow carnations which means 'you have disappointed me'," the blue clad teen laughed.
"Yeah, that one fits," his smile was stunning. It caught Ren off gaurd since just moments ago he looked like he was going to break something out of anger.
"Great, I can also put in orange lilies, which stand for hatred," the teen nodded.
"That would be perfect," he slid the twenty dollars forward, "could you put that together for me and I'll be back in less than an hour to pick it up?"
"Yeah, I could do that for you. What's the name?" Ren nodded, thinking about what flowers he had in the back green house.
"It's Grian!" It was an adorable name.
"Alright, I'll have the order ready whenever you're ready."
"Perfect, thanks Ren!" He stared at the blond, how did he know his name? Grian laughed, "name tag," he winked before leaving.
Ren immidietly replayed their whole encounter in his head, the boy didn't look much older then he was now. 17-19 age. Ren was 18, about to graduate, Grian couldn't be much older.
Ren was going over how he was going to get Grian's phone number as he put together the striking bouquet. He didn't know what the deal was with this fight but it must have been bad. Especial since the group wasn't friends anymore. Sounded like they didn't deserve Grian if he was breaking up their friendship with flowers.
About thirty minutes into the hour, sirens went past the small garden center, Ren shrugged deciding to check it out later.
After waiting an hour and a half, Grian was an hour late. Ren sat behind the counter, scrolling his phone while he waited. An article popped up.
A murder had taken place at the apartment building not far from his shop. The two boys who had died weren't identified at the time, araven haired boy wearing the same outfit as Grian, and a blonde with a red sweater were brutally stabbed to death by a rabbit hybrid.
"Shame, they look like high schoolers. Bet the school won't be happy about this. I wonder what world they went to." (To shortly explain, when someone dies they're transported to a new world)
Ren waited hours for Grian to come back, thinking about the cute freckles that dusted the boys nose, and the golden eyes that seemed to always sparkle. He waited till closing, and when Grian didn't show up he placed the flowers in a vase and hoped he would be back tomorrow.
It was the same routine for a year, Grian never showing up but Ren keeping hope. When the flowers died, he would make a new bouquet, and he always kept the twenty in his wallet as a reminder to keep the flowers.
Eventually Ren was invited to a different server called Hermitcraft but he would go back each weekend, hoping that Grian would return.
This carried on for a long time until it clicked. Ren was in the middle of a conversation with Iskall, when the realization set in and he dropped his phone in an attempt to whip it out and open Google.
"Dude, you good?" Confusion flashed in his eyes as he watched Ren desperately type into his communicator.
Ren shook his head, holding out his phone. A news article from three years ago with a picture of two boys. Apparently it was a bloody and horrid murder. The raven haired boy had been dating the murderer at the time, obviously not being able to continue the relationship. And the blonde was a close friend of the two. The names of the two who died were never published.
"Dang man, what made you think of this?"
"I ran a garden center, still do, and I had a really hot boy come in and order a bouquet, and he never came to pick it up. I've been keeping his order incase he ever shows up, but it's been three years. He told me him and his friends had gotten into a fight and they weren't friend anymore. Sam and Taurtis were their names."
"Sam is the name of the murderer in that article," Iskall realized, looking up to see Ren's eyes welling.
"I had a ten minute conversation with him, but I've keep his order filled for three years. He's been dead for three years," Ren let a tear slip. "He seemed so genuine, I was gonna ask for his number when he came to get it. He looked so kind and caring. He must have been, he was ending a friendship through flowers! He's never gonna come get it."
"Sorry Ren," Iskall hugged the dog hybrid, not knowing what to do. "Can I come see your garden center? I didn't know you ran one."
Ren rubbed his eyes and nodded, "yeah! It's only open on the weekend since I'm here most of the time, so it's not as clean and beautiful as it used to be. But I'll show you some time."
From that day forward, Ren kept the bouquet on the counter as a memorial. During the summer he was there full time, waiting for Season 6 of h
Hermitcraft since he had left season 5 early.
On one of the slower days, he heard the bell jingle and in walked a man, lilac wings sat elegantly on his back and he had a few scars on his face, he also wore a red sweater. Ren gave him a glance, flashing a forced smiled befor turning back to his work, "welcome, I'll be with you in a moment."
"This is quite the striking arrangement of flowers here," he commented. For a moment Ren paused, the voice sounded familiar but he couldn't place it.
"Sorry, that's an order for someone else, and we don't have those flowers in right now."
"Oh, that's alright. I'm here to pick up an order and maybe a hot dude along the way," Ren chuckled, flattered by the compliment. But he didn't remember an order from anyone.
"Mind giving me the name?" He stood up and dusted himself off.
"Grian," Ren whipped around and looked at the man standing at the counter.
"I- pardon?"
"I know I'm a little late-"
"Try four years late!"
"In my defense I was murdered," he chuckled, his curls bouncing slightly. Ren darted across the room, hugging the short blonde. "I just ordered some flowers, now you're attached to me," the smile was evident in his voice as he hugged back.
"I've got your order," Ren's tail wagged as he slapped the twenty dollar next to the vase. "And the twenty bucks you threw at me too."
"I didn't throw it, I might have been angry at the time but your stunning smile diffused that quickly," he winked, Ren giggling.
"I thought you were gone," Ren admitted, his smile dropping.
"To be honest I didn't expect you to be here either. Or have my order filled, " he laughed.
"I have great customer service I'll have you know."
Grian couldn't help but laugh yet again, "I've noticed."
"Wanna met my friends!" His eyes lit up, wanting so desperately for Grian to meet his friends.
"Yeah!" Grian matched his excitement. He was down to meet a few dudes if they were friends of Ren.
Boy was he wrong. When Ren said friends, he didn't expect to be watching 28 different people file out of a portal and into the brand new world.
"Ren, there are so many people here, what is this?"
"My family! Everyone this is Grian! I've known him for a total of 2-ish hours and I think we're married!" Confused waves and hello's followed. Grian just giggled and waved back.
I really enjoyed writing this! Like, a lot. I hope you all liked it too!
