Starting Anew - Part One (Scumbian + Bdubs)

This is the first of three parts (:

-

Bdubs and Scar had begun to date near the middle of the mayoral campaign race back in Season 7. And at first, everything was perfect. But, during Scar's term as mayor, things began going downhill.

More and more often Bdubs would get stood up on date night. More and more often he found himself giving far more than he was receiving.

Broken promises, lies, and many miscommunications led to a fairly messy breakup.

Both felt awful about it but neither were ready to talk about it, even when the season was coming to a close.

-

Despite feeling ready to leave Season 7 behind, Bdubs had stalled. He was waiting and hoping, but he realized that there was no need to wait, so he left. After all, it was exciting, getting to start over.

Since they'd all be living on a continent together, he and Keralis decided to conquer the new land together. And boy was Bdubs ready.

But then, they ran into Scar.

Bdubs had managed to avoid talking with him during the initial meeting. He also unintentionally ignored Doc but that was a discussion for another day.

Now the former mayor was standing before him and his friend, but he seemed... different. And that wasn't just because of the tiny hat.

Keralis told Bdubs he'd be waiting for him and took off as if sensing they needed privacy. It was a little awkward, standing in a desert in a moss hoodie, alone with your ex. Bdubs wanted to start anew, leave behind his old mindset that he drilled into his head with, ironically, the help of the person in front of him.

There was silence for a moment before Scar spoke up. "I'm sorry," he began. "I never got to apologize before you left but truly, I'm sorry for how I treated you while we were... together."

Bdubs pursed his lips. He could tell Scar also knew that saying sorry wasn't going to fix the damage. But, after being with him for so long he had learned how to tell the difference between Scar's sincere and lying face.

And he was being sincere.

That's got to be some kind of start, right?

"Thank you," he whispered, gripping his sleeves.

"And, I promise to give you all the space you need. I am actually going to better myself. But...I hope one day in the far future, we can try and be friends again?" Scar hesitantly asked.

Slowly, he nodded. "One day," he agreed. "But for now, I'd really appreciate the space."

Scar gave a warm smile and nodded as well. "Of course. Well, in that case, I shouldn't keep you from Keralis any longer. See you guys around!" And with that, he gave a wave and headed off in another direction.

Bdubs gave a small wave back before heading over to his friend. "Everything okay?" Keralis asked, squeezing his shoulder.

"I think so, yeah," he breathed with a smile.

-

Scar created a simple rule for himself;

In order to focus on becoming a better person, no relationships this season.

However, it took all of five minutes of standing outside with Mumbo and Grian and watching the couple banter back and forth with each other (and him) for Scar to be more than willing to toss that rule out the window.

Woah, woah, hold on. First off, who's to say they'd even want to date you? It wasn't until the end of last season that they finally got together after spending the past two going back and forth. Second, no matter how much you wish you have, you haven't changed that much. You'll just make the same mistakes and inflict the same pain.

"Woah, Earth to Scar! Are you okay?" Grian asked, snapping his fingers in front of his face.

Blinking, Scar was snapped out of his daze and brought his smile back to his face. "Hm? Oh, yeah I'm all good! Sorry about that!" he assured the two with a little laugh.

"Are you sure?" Mumbo asked. "You looked a little troubled." He gave his arm a gentle squeeze.

His smile softened as he took his hand off his arm and squeezed it. "I promise you guys," he said, looking between them. "I'm fine. But I appreciate the concern."

-

He had wondered if maybe he should attempt to distance himself from the two and give them space. But, Mumbo and Grian refused to let him make that decision, as just about every day they were shouting at him to come join their shenanigans, whatever they may be.

As much as he felt guilty for feeling like he was inserting himself into their activities, they didn't seem like they minded. And even if he wanted to spend today doing something else, away from the small village, he promised Mumbo to help him out, and he wasn't about to start breaking promises again.

Don't get him wrong, Scar had a lot of fun with Mumbo, he just... wished it lasted longer.

And no matter how much time during the day he spent with him, it didn't stop the aching feeling in his chest as he watched him run off with Grian to go on a date.

He longed to be there with them, but instead, he pushed his selfish feelings aside and headed back to his own house.

But, when he stepped inside, there were two hermits waiting for him.

"What're you guys doing here?" he laughed. "What happened to your date? And how'd you even get in here without me noticing?"

Mumbo and Grian glanced at each other before looking at him. The ravenette stepped forward, gently taking his hand. "We've... been talking," he quietly began. "And we were wondering if you'd join us. For a date."

Heat rushed to his face as his heart began to pound against his rib cage.

Did he hear that right?

"Are you serious?" he whispered in disbelief, staring at Mumbo and then at Grian when he walked over to lace his fingers with his free hand.

"I-I'd love to, genuinely more than anything but, really? With... me?"

Grian squeezed his hand between both of his. "I- we can see how much you've grown in such a short time since last season. And even near the end of last season, you had started to change."

"I-I've still got aways to go," he lightly laughed, shaking his head.

He was positive his heart stopped beating when Mumbo leaned over and gently kissed his cheek. "Who says you have to do it alone?"

With a small laugh, he pulled his hands free to give Mumbo a tight hug, burying his head in his shoulder. "Okay," he mumbled. The two parted to let Grian join in.

Their warm embraces felt comforting, but they couldn't stay there forever, after all, they had a date to go on now.

But, as they headed out, Scar couldn't help but feel weighed down by guilt.

It was easier for him to move on and begin a new relationship, but he knew it wouldn't be the same for Bdubs.

He knew all too well that Bdubs was going to need a while to heal thanks to him, and Scar was more than aware of how unfair that was.

Fuck you (/j) parts two and three will be Bdubs centered >:]

The main reason I wrote this was as an apology for always making Scar the toxic character during last season dkfghldsfhglkfh oops (now does this mean I'll stop? uhhhhhh idfk)
