As Doc trudged upstairs to his bedroom, Bdubs followed behind with a sympathetic smile plastered on his face. Nothing like spending dinner being reminded of their upcoming graduation in a few months and the fact that they'll be separated for college.
Doc groaned, flopping onto his bed. "Time is going by way too fast," he complained, voice muffled by his comforter.
Lightly laughing, Bdubs sat on the bed beside him and patted his shoulder. "We've still got time! Plus, we don't live in the middle ages, we can still talk as much as you want," he assured him.
His friend rolled over, revealing a small frown as he stared up at Bdubs. "I'm just not ready to not see you every day. I don't want to say goodbye yet." His whispers pierced Bdubs' heart with a poisoned-dipped arrow. If he was delusional enough, he could pretend Doc liked him back, that his words had romantic connotations, but they didn't and he had to live with that.
"I don't either," he sighed. "But hey, we've got a few months left, right?"
Doc sat up, their shoulders brushing. "Barely two months. Not to mention we're both turning 18 soon," he grumbled.
For just a moment, Bdubs allowed himself to relish in the moment. He leaned just close enough so their shoulders could keep contact. It was those small moments that he'd miss the most.
A breeze from outside the window swept his hair forward and tickled the back of his neck.
That's when Bdubs was struck with a brilliant idea. "I know that technically when we become independent adults, it becomes easier to do basically whatever we want, but I say now while we're still legally kids, we try everything we want to before we graduate and turn 18! Make dumb choices and have stupid little adventures; it'll be the best way to spend our last months together!" He eagerly suggested as he jumped up and stood on the bed.
Doc laughed in disbelief. "What? I mean- well- did you- do you have anything in mind?"
Without explaining himself, Bdubs climbed out the open window onto the roof. When his friend began to protest, he looked back and extended his hand. "C'mon, you've had perfect access up here since forever and we've never done it!" He insisted with a wide smile.
"If we fall or get in trouble I'll push you out the window next time," the hybrid jokingly threatened as he took his hand.
As the two climbed up atop the roof, Bdubs found the night sky was already sprinkled with bright stars. He also found that even when they sat down, Doc hadn't let go of his hand.
"Now this is a view I'll miss," he murmured.
"I know," Doc whispered.
When Bdubs snuck a glance, he found his friend looking at him rather than the sky. He cursed himself for letting his hopes continuously grow, but what else could he do?
"S-So, ah, anything you want to do before graduating? Some classic high school shenanigan you never got to experience?" He prompted.
Doc's ears turned a reddish pink. "Well I've ah, never been on a date before so- I'd like to have been on at least one."
Bdubs regretted asking. Pulling his hand away, he hugged his knees. "I can't say they're that exciting. I've been on two or three first dates and trust me; it sucks when people get... bored so easily of you," he muttered. "I mean I can't blame anyone; it was freshman and sophomore year. But- But we're not talking about me! Is um, is there anyone, in particular, you'd want to go on a date with, or is it- is it just being on a date that you're after?" He asked, flashing a smile.
"I mean, there is... someone," Doc sheepishly admitted, scratching the back of his neck.
His heart crashed through the roof, falling through the house until it got itself lodged into the basement floor. Of course, Doc liked someone. "If I know them, maybe I can help you score that date," he offered. Bdubs was just digging a hole for himself, and at what cost?
"Maybe," the hybrid repeated, his frown returning.
With a heavy exhale through his nose, he let his eyes wander across the sky. "I always thought I'd- that I would get to experience my first kiss before leaving, but at this rate, it's looking like a- like a college thing I guess," he admitted, his words light despite the heavy weight of yearning to kiss his friend.
"Hey, listen, about- about what I said," Doc began which drew Bdubs' eyes onto him. "About getting a- date. It's- you do know them because-"
It hurt.
It hurt so much seeing Doc getting flustered and worked up about someone who wasn't him. Yet he stared at him with a patient smile. No matter how much it killed him he'd do whatever it took to ensure his friend's happiness, even if it would cost him his own.
However, much to his surprise, Doc took one of his hands and squeezed it. "I really like you Bdubs. Like, a stupid amount. You don't have to, but if you could just- consider going out on a date with me? And- And if- if you realize you don't hate it so much, I'd like to take you out more," he suddenly confessed.
Bdubs' mouth sat agape, his heart racing.
"Me?!" He blurted out in disbelief. "Are you s- me?! You want to go on a date- on multiple dates- with me, of all people?!" He couldn't believe it, was this a joke? No, Doc would never pull a joke or prank that cruel on him.
He nodded. "Yes, you."
Exhaling a shaky breath, Bdubs dropped his forehead onto his shoulder and began to just- laugh. "I can't believe it," he whispered. "I- Doc I like you so much you have no idea."
"Well believe it," Doc laughed. "I like you, Bdubs, so would you want t-"
"Yes!" He interrupted, raising his head. "I'll go on a date with you! I'll go on hundreds of dates with you!" The two of them began to laugh, their foreheads meeting.
However, their laughter began to die down when Doc quietly asked, "And when we leave for college, are you going to look for someone else? We're going to schools in different parts of the country. Yes, the same timezone but-" He cut himself off with a sigh and closed his eyes.
Bdubs squeezed his hands. "Don't think like that, okay? You'll be stuck with me as long as you can take it, and that's a threat," he teased.
With half-lidded eyes, Doc smiled at him, his free hand gently holding his jaw. "I accept my fate then," he teased back, much softer than Bdubs.
His heart was racing and he opened his mouth to say something, anything at all, but none of it got past the lump in his throat. It was still taking him time to fully digest that Doc asked him out. He couldn't help but wonder if it was all some twisted dream.
And if it is, please don't wake me up, he blissfully wished, leaning his cheek into his hand. "What're you thinking about?" Doc whispered, his breaths bouncing against his face.
"I-" Bdubs swallowed. "You. It's you. I've wanted to kiss you," he explained, squeezing his hand.
"We c- We can kiss if you want to right now!" Doc eagerly suggested.
With his free hand on the hybrid's thigh, they kissed. They were both hesitant at first, lips lightly brushing against each other. But then Doc pulled his jaw in closer, firmly pressing their lips together. Bdubs lightly gripped the fabric of his pants, unable to keep back a giggle. "Stop," the half-creeper chided as he too began to giggle. "You're making it harder to kiss you!"
"Sorry, I'm just really happy!" He confessed, kissing him again.
"I promise to treat you so much better than anyone who took you on a date," the other one promised, pulling back just enough so that their noses still brushed against each other.
Bdubs' smile grew. "You're already the best boyfriend I can ask for." It was then he realized that despite agreeing to go on dates, they hadn't quite labeled anything. In hindsight, it was a silly concern, yet he still worried.
Thankfully, Doc simply matched his smile. "I'm glad I'm already there!" However, his expression slipped to something more serious. "Honestly, though, when the time comes and we go off to college; if you do want to break things off and meet new people, I'll back off, promise."
He pulled his hand away from his cheek so he could clasp them both between his own. "Doc, no, I'm- that's not what I want. But if that's something that you want then I'll respect your choice but for me? I'd be fine with long-distance! If anyone could make it work it's us," he insisted.
Cracking a smile, the hybrid quickly kissed him again. "Okay," he laughed.

The two had repositioned themselves to be leaning against each other, arms intertwined as they stared at the stars above. "So, what's the plan for our first date?" Bdubs whispered, his head nestled on Doc's shoulder.
"Honestly?" His new boyfriend began to laugh all over again. "I didn't think I'd make it this far!"
