Death had been directed by his superiors to travel back in time to stop the disaster known as the great dark war. His adventure starts in the quiet unassuming town known as Hermitville. And while even in his uncorporal form he tried his best, between sneaking potions into Hermits inventories and exterminating mobs. He buried himself into this grueling, exhausting work, determined to save the world.

Who knew just two simple words could mean so much?
Zedaph never expected it, so when the phrase reached his ears it hit him like a truck.
"Thank you."
It was told to him by a blue color-changing slime. He was truly amazed. Nobody had ever acknowledged him before, they didn't even know he was there.
He was invisible to the human eye, and he couldn't exactly interact with mortals directly, but the fact that they knew Zed was actually there was incredible. Death just couldn't believe it. This sort of behavior was incomprehensible. How in the world was this even possible?
He was speechless.
However, Mr. Blue Slime man was not.
"Er, yeah...I saw you around doing all these kind things; I kinda just figured you could use some sort of verbal appreciation. But I was thinking and realized you deserved a little more." The slime smiled to himself. " I know it isn't much but I tried my hardest." He earnestly handed over a box.
Zed looked it over, several times before deeming it safe, then proceeding to eagerly opened it.
Inside as a sparkling silver chain and attached to it was a gold medallion, though the engraving was a little more than slightly perplexing. It was the symbol of health and protection.
The mortal waved. "Glad you like it, but I best be off before Wels starts yelling at me. Anyways, see you around, Life."
None of the other mortals could see him so Zed was confused why the blue slime could see him. he would've corrected the poor dimwitted mortal, but he already left.

Zed started watching him from afar, he was eager to learn more about this peculiar mortal. Zedaph quickly picked up that the slime's name was Jevin. He learned the names of all Jevin's friends and even found out that Jevin had a boyfriend...
Zed flipped the necklace between his fingers. He wasn't sure what was wrong with him. His mind wouldn't budge. It was always about Jevin. His brand new sweater or the grin he wore so proudly. In the past few days since their encounter, Zedaph couldn't think of anything else besides that cute blue slime man that he met that day.
Zed started to hang around Jevin a bit more. He noticed different friends were closer to Jevin and would actively flirt half the time. Jevin would never acknowledge the flirting, though.
Whenever Jevin's friends showed up, Zedaph would always shrink away, hiding deep under the veils of invisibility. But Jevin never seemed to look away. The slime's caring eyes gazed in his direction ever so often, muttering something along the lines of "Are you doing alright, Life?". It never failed to make the death god's face go beet red.
Why did this slime do this to him? And more importantly, how? Jevin's presence alone makes him feel flustered and all warm inside, and the death god doesn't understand why.
Another thing Death started noticing was the people who also got flustered around Jevin and those who flirted effortlessly. He memorized how they all reacted to being around. How their faces heat up around him, parts of their mind crashing while others played it off well.
With days, weeks, months of 'observing', he immediately came to the obvious conclusion that they like the blob man more than friends. How did Jevin not noticed was beyond him, even a blind man could tell that he stole a lot of hearts with his kindness and personality.
(MAYBE IT'S THE POWER O, BEING A MAIN PROTAGONIST IN A HAREMMMMMMMM)

It all started at school, Jevin once again late for class, and Zedaph was just casually watching through the window. Though when Jevin's 'boyfriend' stared the death god dead in the eye, things certainly took an unexpected turn. Jevin's so and so 'boyfriend' was waving. This was never supposed to happen. Zed quickly sat down and almost fell over as someone appeared in front of him. "Hi! Who are you?" the person asked, making Zed jump back. They actually saw him? What?
"Are you going to speak?" asked Jevin's boyfriend, Wels he believed.
This snapped Zed out of his trance. The death god quickly jumped out the window before teleporting to the roof.

Zedaph wasn't sure what to do in the slightest. Not one but two mortals managed to see him; something was clearly off. He prayed for it to be a fluke. Wels could've just been chatting to his refection while he teacher was busy lecturing Jevin. But even he couldn't convince himself fully. The death god sat down. He had a long time to wait before school ended for the day. Zed got his bearings and calmed himself down on the roof. Lunchtime soon rolled around which meant Jevin would be soon coming up to the roof to eat lunch. The death god waited patiently for him to arrive.
When Jevin showed up, he was overjoyed, though that was quickly replaced when he saw Wels behind him.
he didn't move. Watching cautiously as the two approached. Jevin as per usual was relaxed, his blobby hands deep in his pocket and a lazy smile cast across his face. There was a stark difference between the pair. Wels was the nearly the complete opposite, jittery and uptight, his arms seemingly bolted to his side. Aware of it or not, he stood protectively in front of Jevin.
"What are you doing?" Jevin asked, stepping around Wels, who tried to hold him back. It failed when Jevin easily slips out of his grip.
Jevin casually sat onto the bench beside an awkward-looking Zed, who scooted a tiny bit closer.
"He's not normal! He jumped out a third-floor window and nobody spared him a second glance!" Wels said, staying where he was.
Zedaph snorted. And with a sudden rush of confidence he spoke. "Says the guy who can actually see me..."
Wels had a bewildered look on his face. "Wha-what do you mean!? I'm perfectly normal! You're the freak who stalks my boyfriend!"
Zedaph's eyes shot open in surprise, he couldn't believe he forgot. The current drama pushed to the back of his mind as he scrambled desperately for his phone. Checking the date only sealed his fate.
September 13th, 20XX.
He was screwed.
This was the reason he was sent to watch over Hermitville to begin with. He was so foolish, disregarding the safety of the entire world, for a glimpse of Jevin's kindness. He was sent to stop the oncoming attack of demons. The dangerous rivalry between death gods and demons would spark war after today's demon patrol. The oncoming war would be catastrophic. It's what the mortals of the future would call the apocalypse.
Zed cursed, ignoring the confused looks he was getting.
He was a whole day late. It would only be an hour or so before the demons get to Hermitville. He cursed to himself as he stepped up to jump off the roof so he could take off, but a hand stopped him.
"Stop please, Life, you gotta explain what's going on."
Zedaph flinched. The gloopy hand had a firm grip on his wrist. He bit his lip. It hurt him physically to say it, but if those two got involved they might as well be kissing their lives goodbye.
It wasn't more than a whisper, but that's all it needed to be.
"Let go of me, Jevin."
Jevin's eyes widened. This wasn't the god of Life he knew. A dark aura emanated from Zed. Jevin let go, backing up a step.
"I'm not a god of life," Zed said, not daring to look behind him.
"They call me Death."
