Grian watched as Scar try to bargain his way into a free coffee, not knowing this was Scar's plan before when he texted, 'Let's go get a drink together!'.
He watched as Scar argued with the poor worker, and sighed. His head rested on his hand as he thought about what exactly brought him to like Scar. Not best friends type of like either, it was as in crushes.
"What do you mean I'm kicked out of the store?" Scar exclaimed suddenly, jump scaring Grian.
Glancing over, the cashier seemed to make a hand gesture that signalled for Scar to get out, saying something just out of earshot.
The blond mentally sighed, dragging himself out of his seat. Honestly, he was kind of curious about Scar's trail of thinking that led to this.
Scar turned around and grumpily walked away. "Fine, I'll leave, but just know that you're losing a very valuable trade here! I-"
Grian, who had just joined Scar, smacked him on the back of his head, causing Scar to immediately shut up. He looked at the other with a confused look, as if to say 'When did you ever get here?'
He dragged Scar out of the cafe, apologizing. "Sorry! We'll get going now!" He told the cashier, as he was the one often apologizing for Scar's actions. They gave him an 'it's okay' type of look, then went back to taking people's orders.
Once both of them were safely out of the cafe, and more importantly, out of earshot, Grian questioned Scar. "Scar, why are you banned from that cafe?"
"Well, I just thought that maybe if I sold them my magical crystals, which by the way, they should have taken, they would've given me a free drink, y'know?" Scar tried to reason, looking at Grian with seemingly innocent eyes.
Grian tried to repress the thought of how magical crystals may sound to someone who didn't know exactly what they were. Especially that random cashier, who looked like they were in high school.
He was subconsciously smiling at the thought. He faced away from Scar, looking around the plaza for anywhere else to go.
"Well, it looks like there's an arcade over there," Grian states to Scar. He vaguely gestured towards it.
It was hard not to miss it, especially with the bright neon signs and lights. Plus, Grian had been there enough to know that it was a really good way to waste time and money. Like a casino for kids.
Scar flipped around upon hearing the word arcade. "Really? Can we go? Please?" He begs, hands clasped together. His eyes were shining hopefully.
Grian chuckled. "Sure," He agreed, not really in the mood to ask if he's even got money or not.
Scar, out of nowhere, grabbed Grian's arm and started running towards the arcade, No heads up or anything.
"Wait wait no- WoAAHH," Grian exclaimed, taken by surprise. He barely kept his balance, trying not to fall on the rough pavement.
They make it to the entrance of the arcade, where they slow down a bit. Grian slowly lets go of Scar, regaining his balance
"Scar! You're gonna break my arm!" Grian jokingly said, referring to the other still grabbing his arm. His heart was racing too, but he doubted that was actually because of the run.
Scar immediately let go of his arm, holding up his hand. "Oh! Sorry, got a bit carried away there" He said.
Grian smiled, his hand going up to where Scar had grabbed him. He kind of missed the touch.
"It's okay, uh, how about we go over there?" Grian suggested, pointing over at one of the arcade games. This one had pink and yellow stripes if you could even look past the terribly plastered-on mice.
Scar looked down, and guiltily said "Ooh, I haven't got any cash though..." Twiddling his thumbs while saying so.
Grian had anticipated this. Unsurprisingly, it wasn't the first time Scar leeched off of other people. In fact, Grian was pretty sure Scar would go bankrupt if he tried to pay all his debt back.
He pretended to think about it, hand on his chin, stroking a purely imaginary beard.
"Hmm, fine,"
Scar looked up quickly, with a look in his eyes that really doubted it. "Really?" He questioned, using a tone that sounded kind of surprised. Like he genuinely did not expect this.
Grian could feel the warmth in his chest rise, and his heartbeat slowly quicken. "Yea, but you have to pay me back." He said.
Scar's eyes lit up, and he smiled
"Don't worry I will!" He replied.
'He probably won't' Grian mentally said, but never bothered to voice outloud.
Scar visibly cheered up and dragged them to the game. "Loser has to, uh..." He thought for a moment looking around.
"Oh! If you lose, you have to wear those giant hoop earrings! Like the ones you see on, uh, Instagram or something like that." He said.
Grian rolled his eyes, "Don't tell me we're gonna have to get our ears pierced." He looked over at Scar.
He looked confused. "What? We could just ask Ren, he still works at that tattoo shop, right? The one that also has the piercings?"
"You sure that's a good idea?" Grian stated to Scar, trying, and ultimately failing to make him change the bet.
Scar looked at Grian, considering the possibility. "You know what, you're right. It's a bad idea, but bad ideas are fun, so we're still doing it!"
"Ok, sure," Grian finally caved, giving in to Scar.
Scar grinned, knowing he'd won this "Yea! Ok, I'm going first!" He grabbed the game so hard it would have died if it was alive.
Grian put in a dollar. "Ok, one round for each of us?" he asked. Scar nodded.
A thought crossed Grian's mind while inserting the dollar. "Scar? What if we tie?" He questioned. It wasn't something either of them had thought about.
"Well, first of all, it won't happen, because I'll definitely win, but if it somehow does, I guess we both just get hoop earrings." Scar answered, not leaving any room for debate.
--- (After they each play the game)---
"SCAR! Look at my score!" Grian exclaimed, causing Scar to turn away from the prizes.
Upon seeing the screen, his eyes widened, and he buried his face in his hands, and slowly dragged his hands down his face, like he couldn't believe it. "Oh. my. god."
Grian laughed almost manically. "I-I can't believe we actually tied..." He doubled over in laughter.
"Oh my god..." Scar said again, still in disbelief.
Grian grinned at Scar. "So, where was this store?"
Scar sighed and took out his phone, which was ornated with many stickers of cats, and a glued-on pom-pom. Why? Grian couldn't say, but that was beside the point.
"Didn't Ren say that you have to make an appointment before?" Scar questioned, now doubting himself.
Grian shrugged, "Go ahead then,"
---
Scar and Grian walked into the store at 4:30 pm the next day.
Ren looked up from his book and greeted the both of them, waving his hand.
"Hey! What's up?" He said enthusiastically.
Grian waved back, "Hey Ren! I assume Scar's already told you about the bet..?"
Scar, in the meanwhile, wasn't paying any attention to Ren or Grian, and was looking at the tattoo designs instead. Blissful ignorance as they put it.
Ren shook his head. "Nope, haven't heard anything, what's it about?" He asked, turning away to go prep the piercing gun.
"Well, we bet on an arcade game, which in hindsight was pretty stupid of me to do, but I did, and we ended up in a tie," Grian explained, watching Ren do his thing.
Scar turned around, "So, are we getting the earrings today?" He asked.
"Well, you could do it normally and wait six months, but you could also do it today using potions," Ren stated, kind of like a salesman. "Which one?"
Scar rolled his eyes. "Of course we get it today!" He said, thinking that it was obvious.
"Er, how much more does that cost?" Grian asked. Potions were pretty expensive nowadays, as the ingredients were hard to get.
"Just 150 dollars more, it's no big deal really," Ren casually said.
Grian's eyes flickered from Ren to his own wallet, then back at Ren. "...Yea, no big deal," Grian sarcastically repeated.
"I appreciate that you think that I've got infinite amounts of money guys, but I'm not paying for that," Grian said.
"Doesn't Scar owe you, like, 5000 dollars now? Just ask him to pay," Ren offered, directing the attention to Scar.
Scar raised his hands. "Woah woah woah, who said I owed him that much?"
"Have you not been keeping track?" Grian said. He already knew the other wasn't, but it made for a good counter-argument.
"Fine, guys it's on the house," Ren said, motioning Grian to come to where Ren was sitting. Arguments between Grian and Scar are usually the hardest to resolve, just because both of them were extraordinarily stubborn, despite their starkingly differing personality.
He held up the piercing gun while Grian sat himself down.
"Ready?" Ren asked, to which Grian nodded.
"By the way, nice tattoo, where'd you get it?" Ren complimented, upon seeing a little rose behind the other's ear. It was extremely intricate, impressive for such a little picture.
"Wait, what?" Grian and Scar said at the same time.
Scar said right after."You got a tattoo? Why didn't you tell me?"
"Well, it's because I didn't get one!" Grian said, now as confused as ever. He looked back at Ren.
Ren's eyes lit like a spark when he put the pieces together. "Guys! It could be his soulmate mark!" He said grinning.
"You didn't find yours, remember?" Ren reminded Grian.
"Oooo~," Scar said, looking straight at Grian. "Does somebody have a crush? Perhaps?"
Grian's face heated up instantaneously.
"Scar!" He exclaimed. He would've covered his head in his hands if Ren wasn't holding him by the ear. He didn't even feel the piercing. One good thing about being embarrassed is getting distracted Grian thought.
Meanwhile, Scar was giggling to himself like a teenage schoolgirl.
Ren chuckled too, finishing up. "Ok ok, it's done, the potions and earrings are on the counter over there," Ren told Grian, gesturing to a nearby table.
"Oh! Already? Ok then," Grian got up and walked over to the counter, taking a potion. He chugged it, almost immediately gagging.
Scar excitedly sat on the chair, and didn't notice Grian's disgust. "Ok, ok, ok, Let's do this!" He said smiling, acting quite childish.
"Yep! Just let me just help Grian, I don't think he's ever worn earrings before..." Ren commented, watching Grian try to get the actual hoop, not just the post, through his ear.
Grian didn't look up but still remarked. "Of course I haven't! Why would I pierce my ears?"
"Ok, so your supposed to get just that thin rod through, and use this to put on the other side," Ren said, putting it on for the other. "Do the other one yourself,"
"Yep! Think I've got it!" Grian thanked Ren.
While Ren prepped the piercing gun again, Scar commented on Grian. "Grian you look so weird!"
"I know!" He answered.
"Hey, Ren? Could you also help me with the earring part? I haven't worn earrings either," Scar asked, to which Ren only nodded.
Ren had the most confused look on his face as his brain computed what he was seeing.
Another small rose behind Scar's ear. It wasn't that he thought Scar didn't have a soulmate, it was that he didn't imagine that they would be a pair. It made sense, they were basically conjoined at the hip.
"Hey Scar... nice tattoo," Ren remarked, hoping the two would piece it together themselves.
"What?" Grian said, looking at Scar, who put his hands up again.
"I swear I didn't get any tattoos," He promised, bringing his hands down.
Both of their eyes widened at the same time when it finally clicked in their heads.
"Uhh, this is awkward..." Grian laughed.
"Well, perfect timing then, 'cause Scar's done," Ren said, handing a potion to Scar.
"Oh, by the way, Scar, the potion tastes really bad, just a heads up," Grian informed Scar, who was already drinking it.
"Ew, what is this?" Scar commented after drinking the whole thing. "It tastes like literal grass!"
Grian shrugged. "Can't say I didn't warn you,"
"Er, could you maybe leave now? I kinda actually have paying customers here," Ren told them, gesturing towards the people waiting in the other room.
"But the earrings..?" Scar trailed off, looking at Ren.
"Grian can do it, right?" Ren said, to which Grian nodded. They both left the store quickly, them almost forgetting to say bye.
The door closed behind them, and both of them left to their own devices to get themselves out of this soulmate's mess. It seemed like they'd moved on quickly, but who could just brush over that?
"So uh, wanna go sit down for a moment? I could put the earrings on," Grian sheepishly offered. Scar looked around, scanning for a place to sit.
Finally, Scar concluded that he wanted to go to a table with an umbrella. It wasn't even sunny, quite cloudy actually.
"Can we sit over there? It's got a fancy umbrella and everything!" He asked Grian, to which he agreed.
"Sure," He shrugged.
They made their way through the small gatherings of people, weaving through the crowds. The bench they chose to sit at was painted a light but lively beige, contrasting starkly with the umbrella; which was a dark navy blue.
They wove through the masses of people here, after all, it was a Sunday. They sat down almost in sync, which looked kinda cool.
Grian fumbled with the earrings for a bit trying to put them on the other.
"So, about the soulmate mark...?" Scar suggested, prompting Grian to open up a discussion.
"Oh uh, about that..." Grian fidgeted with the hoop some more, trying to buy time. He sighed and put the earring down, clinking it on the table. His hand moved subconsciously to hair.
"I mean it's probably best that I tell you now, but Scar, promise that we'll still be friends after this?" Grian said with an apologetic glance.
Scar cocked his head. "Why wouldn't I still be friends with you?" He asked, and when he saw how worried Grian was, he decided to confirm it. "But sure, we'll always be friends! Now what do you wanna tell me?"
"Well, I, uh..." Grian cleared his throat. "Scar, I really like you, I do. Not just in the best-friends way either." He looked away.
Scar raised his eyebrows in shock, hesitating before asking his question. "So, like as a crush?" He questioned as he tilted his head.
"You don't have to date me, it's not a rule or anything," Grian frantically added on, doubling as an answer too. He looked back at Scar.
Scar smiled slightly, the glint in his eyes shining.
"Y'know what? I think we'd make a good pair, why not?" He said, extending his hand out to take Grian's. Despite his usually playful and childish behavior, he knew when to take it back a notch, and when to act more serious.
Grian's blue eyes widened, not expecting the feeling to be mutual. He placed his hand in Scar's palm. "I'm going to be completely honest, I thought you liked Mumbo,"
"Oh!... Is that a compliment or insult?" Scar responded.
"Well, you two together contribute to about 1 braincell, so take that as you wish." Grian lightheartedly joked.
They both giggled, continuing on another conversation, talking until the sun went down.
