----------------------------------------
"Hey Wels?" False was sitting against a tree in the corner of the clearing she and Wels had run to after Xisuma had abandoned them.
"Yeah, False?" Wels came over to False's side.
"I'm sorry if I was rude to you yesterday. I know it wasn't your fault X ran off... I was just frustrated. If there's something I can do to make it up to you.."
(NGL i really considered having Wels kill her and be like "you can die for me!" but i decided against it)
"False, you weren't rude to me, really. There's nothing to apologize for," Wels replied.
"Okay then. Well, we should go attack Grian soon," False changed the subject.
"We've got enough supplies," Wels informed her.
"Perfect! Should we head out?" False stood up.
Wels nodded and gestured for her to lead the way.
They walked for several hours before hearing a loud boom. They went to the source of the sound and found the laughing trio of Bdubs, Impulse, and Tango.
"Hello, boys," called False.
The Boomers turned to look at her.
"Hey, False!" called Impulse cheerily.
False sighed. "You really don't get the game, do you?"
"What do you mea-" Tango's sentence was cut short as an arrow planted itself in his chest. Tango didn't even have a chance to scream before he died.
Impulse and Bdubs jumped up. "FALSE?" screeched Impulse.
"It's kill or be killed here in the arena," False said as she nocked another arrow. This time, it missed as Impulse jumped out of the way.
Wels grabbed a vine behind him and climbed up it. Leaping across the treetops, he chased the two remaining Boomers across the canopy. False followed, grabbing and climbing vines one-handed while holding her bow in the other.
The four raced above the forest. Eventually, the chase ended as Impulse saw a sword sticking out of his chest. He vanished in a flash as he died. Bdubs turned and saw Wels holding a bloody sword. Eyes wide, he cried, "I'll help you! Please! I can help you!"
"Help us?" False gestured to Wels to wait. "How?"
"You wanna go after Grian, right, I think? I can offer my services with a sword, or bow, or TNT, or I can threaten them- I got I- I got intel on the- him!" Bdubs said as fast as he could. "But I'll only tell you if you promise not to kill me," he added.
"Intel? Alright, Bdubs, welcome to the team," False put away her bow. Behind her, Wels sheathed his sword.
"Okay then!" Bdubs sighed in relief.
The trio hopped down from the trees and False turned to Bdubs. "So, what do you know?"
"Grian is with Mumbo and Iskall, they're a team. But I talked to Iskall a few days ago and I got him to betray them. He told me he'd join us when the time came. I did kinda promise him a reward but I'm sure we can come up with something. Or we can just leave him, whatever you wanna do," Bdubs informed them.
"A traitor? This is great," False said. "Do you know where they are now?"
"Well... no... I did but me and the other Boomers kinda blew up their camp..." Bdubs admitted.
"Alright, a minor issue. No problem, I'm sure we'll find them. Don't worry about it, Bdubs, that's a great thing to do, blowing up their camp," False said.
The trio headed off.
----------------------------------------
The Architechs were having a bad day.
First, their camp had been blown up. As if that wasn't bad enough, they'd also had a disagreement with a patch of sweet berries.
The berries were up to Mumbo's waist, and he was the tallest. Grian was having the worst time. His unprotected wings were exposed to the brambles.
The three pushed through the thicket, making it about a fourth of the way through the gigantic sea of thorns.
"Why didn't you just fly over this, Grian?" exclaimed Iskall.
"Because I didn't think to! And I took an arrow to the wing just a few days ago, it's still not fully healed!" Grian retorted.
"Oh... fair enough," Iskall replied.
Suddenly, Grian let out a cry. Mumbo and Iskall turned just in time to see him vanish beneath the leaves.
"Grian!" Mumbo yelled, wading towards him. Iskall did the same.
Grian had tripped over a vine and was curled into a small ball, trying not to move so he didn't get scratched by the thorns.
Mumbo reached him first.
"Grian, how can I help?" asked Mumbo.
"I-I don't k-know," Grian was trying to stay still, but he was shaking with fear. He hated being trapped, and the brambles were lodged in his wings and clothes, which was both painful and limiting.
Mumbo pushed aside as many brambles as he could. Iskall soon joined him. Grian yelped every time one was removed from his wings, and Mumbo and Iskall winced every time they heard him. Together, the two dislodged brambles from Grian. Mumbo grabbed Grian under his arms and pulled him out. As he did, Iskall removed the last of the brambles.
"I know it'll hurt, Grian, but you have to fly, okay?" Mumbo told him, holding him above the thorns. "You can't make it through the brambles on foot."
Grian reluctantly obliged, flapping his wings hard. A few colorful feathers drifted to the ground after him.
Landing on the far side of the thicket, Grian brushed his hands over his wings in an attempt to calm himself down as he watched his friends trudge through the sweet berries.
Mumbo and Iskall emerged from the thicket a few minutes later. Their hands were shiny red with blood, making Grian wince. Luckily, their injuries looked worse than they were. Grian cleaned and bandaged their cuts and was relieved to find there were only a few on each of their hands.
The three continued into the forest and wandered until night fell. They still hadn't found anywhere to stay.
"Grian, you built the arena, you should know your way around!" Mumbo exclaimed eventually.
"I only built the wall, I had no clue what was inside!" Grian replied.
"So there could have been some hermit's base in here and you wouldn't know?" Mumbo retorted.
"No, I did check that. But there could have been almost anything else in here!" Grian answered.
"Guys, guys, now is not the time to argue," Iskall interjected.
Grian and Mumbo guiltily shut up. They walked for a few more minutes before Grian stopped.
"Hey, why don't we just climb a tree and sleep there?" he suggested.
"Oh, I didn't think of that- oh yeah, because you can't sleep in a tree! It's far too dense and the branches are too thin! What a genius idea. You're just so smart-" Mumbo sarcastically ranted.
"Mumbo!" Iskall cut him off. "You can shut up for the rest of the night or I can make you. Anyway, climbing a tree is a good idea, I don't know why we didn't think of that. I'll climb up with you, Grian. Mumbo here can do what he wants."
"Thanks Iskall," Grian looked sad as he scrambled up the tree and onto a branch, where he made himself a nest of leaves and laid down facing away from Iskall. Iskall sat next to Grian's nest, hearing sniffling.
"Grian?" Iskall asked softly.
"G-go a-away," Grian stammered.
"Buddy, don't listen to Mumbo. I don't know what's gotten into him," Iskall tried to comfort him.
"He's right. I made this game and I put us all into it and I'm not special, anyone could come up with this idea. And I'm just a burden for you guys, you had to rescue me earlier. And I have wings, it's not fair for you-" Grian sat up and faced Iskall.
"Grian, you're not a burden. We all love you, and no one's mad at you for making this. No one's upset that you have wings, it's who you are," Iskall said, internally wincing at the thought of what he'd told Bdubs a few days earlier. Did he have to stick to it?
"O-okay. A-are you sure Mumbo doesn't hate me?" Grian asked.
"Yes, I'm sure," Iskall told him.
With that, Grian laid down and fell asleep. Iskall joined him soon after.
----------------------------------------
Scar was lost in thought as he walked into the announcers' tower.
"Hey Scar!" called Cub.
"Oh- hi Cub. Sorry, I was just thinking," Scar said.
"No worries. What were you thinking about?" Cub asked.
"The Games... it's getting pretty intense. I'm just a bit nervous. I know it's fake, but..." Scar trailed off.
"Yeah, it's brutal. But everyone will be okay in the end!" Cub reassured him.
"Alright, let's get into it," Scar said.
"Welcome back to the Hermitcraft Hunger Games! Today we see Stress and Xisuma gather resources. The Architechs' supplies are blown up by the Boomers. It's not a good day for either group, as the Architechs also have a bad encounter with a patch of sweet berries later, and the Boomers are attacked by False and Wels. We see Bdubs join the two after the deaths of Tango and Impulse," Cub said.
"Of course Impulse and Tango go out together," commented Scar, laughing.
"Of course," agreed Cub. "And now, the deaths."
Scar walked over to the cannon.
"Today saw the downfall of Impulse..."
BOOM.
"...and Tango."
BOOM.
"Can't wait to see how this plays out!" Scar added.
"That's all for today! Come back tomorrow for more of the Hermitcraft Hunger Games!" Cub finished.
