Trust.
[D&D AU

Tw: Mentions of acid burns, personal betrayal]
----
Marra Voidwalker never really gave trust freely. But compared to how they were now, they used to give trust very easily.
Not anymore. You only make that mistake once.
They'd just returned from a solo trip: the Drow got some much needed alone time. But, still the sight of her crew as she docked made him feel warm inside. They were greeted by most of the town, including Impulse, Gem, Zed, and countless others. But only the crew were permitted to board.
Doc, Bdubs, Phoenix, Nico, Blue, and... them.
The redheaded half-elf had been unusually quiet and secluded, so when they'd asked Marra if they could talk alone, she didn't think much of it. Maybe he'd really missed her, they did struggle when left alone.
She thought he was safe. Marra thought they were friends.
But as her back was to him, they were proven wrong. He still remembers the feeling of acid burning across her back as the traitor talked, not that she could focus on what was said with the acid tearing at their skin and burning through her clothes.
Bdubs had arrived at the scene first, right as the traitor was about to plunge a knife through the captain's chest, stating how he'd be a better leader than Marra ever was. Had he not acted fast enough, Marra wouldn't have survived.
They'd left the mutineer to run away, from the town and from the crew that no longer would accept him. Not after what he'd done.
Marra Voidwalker had changed that day. They were more distant for a long time, colder. They didn't sing along with Blue's shanties, he didn't let Phoenix help guide the ship to their destinations, she didn't even let anyone hug her. Out of fear that it'd be the next big mistake, one nobody could save her from.
Doc tried to help them heal, but it wasn't until the captain had disappeared that she was willing to try. Marra was... damaged, but didn't want to admit it. Even months, a year after the knife to the back, the captain didn't want to admit that they missed him. That she was angry, that they wanted to sob for hours at a time until the pain went away.
The walls only broke after Marra almost lost it all. After the traitor returned and ratted them all out.
After they'd opened up again, and nearly lost everything she had fought tooth and nail for. So the moment her crew embraced him... Marra Voidwalker broke. Letting out a year's worth of pain, he held her loved ones as close as he could.
And finally started to heal, bit by bit.
