Both Hinata and Kageyama had been in the gym when you entered after slamming the door open. The sound of the door hitting the wall scared you as Hinata screamed a little and Kageyama flinched, turning when he caught the ball he was supposed to set. Hinata tripped over his footing and fell face down causing another loud 'bang' to echo in the empty sports building and you flinched once again, "S-sorry!"
"Ah! No it's okay (Y/N)-senpai!"
Kageyama's shoulders visibly relaxed and you had to exhale as the door slowly swung back around to meet your hand so you could close it properly, more peacefully. You had nodded towards Hinata; as he stood back upand walked towards the bleachers to sigh again, "Kageyama~! Another one!"
You set your sights on the two and tilted your head towards Kageyama who kept looking at you, wide eyes with a grim line crossing his lips, "Kageyama-kun? Is something wrong?"
"Kageyama~" Hinata whined again, his eyes were closed with a droopy mouth and his arms were hanging by his side with that bent over posture. He neared the setter but the black-haired first year kept holding the ball in his hands, "Are you okay (Y/N)-senpai?"
This startled you, at the very least you were a little shocked to hear this question. Not being aware of what showed on your face, you didn't hold a smile nor a frown. Hinata had looked up at his team mate with a confused look, the little orange-haired middle blocker was puzzled at the seriousness that was portrayed on Kageyama's face, "Ehh? Senpai?"
"I- What? I'm fine Kageyama-kun.. Thank you.. Though.."
It wasn't a lie but it also wasn't exactly the truth. Honestly what had happened previously with Ryusei was a little amusing but it also made what happened more real. It wasn't a nightmare on repeat that occurred even when you were in class. You should've expected it, you should've realised it would've happened sooner or later but why couldn't it have been later. Or really, why did it have to happen at all?
He had nodded and proceeded to throw a reckless set towards his middle blocker and Hinata's eyes squeezed shut when his feet lost contact with the shining ground beneath. The ball was gone as soon as it seemed to reach Hinata's palm and the slap echoed throughout the gym. The black-haired boy looked at his shot, the ball and followed it with bright eyes as his spiker landed with a grin. His cheeks were red just like his palm and he yelled in accomplishment when your jaw had dropped a little, "YOSHAAA~!!"
"That was really impressive guys!" They had smiled back at you and you couldn't help sliding to the front of the bench to lean forward on your knees, they turned back and Hinata went back to the white line at the back to begin another run up, "(Y/N)-senpai, can you toss for us?!"
Without a word, Hinata grinned excitedly when you jumped up to jog towards them, he passed the ball and you prepped yourself to toss to the setter- the genius setter. Just as the ball left your hand, the door to the gym was once again slammed open. You jumped but kept your eyes on Hinata as he jumped with his tongue out of the corner of his mouth, his eyes closed again. They shot and Hinata slammed the ball with an such speed that you didn't even see it until it was bouncing off of the floor to roll to a stop.
"(Y/N)-chan~! What're you doing?!"
Turning with a little roll of the eyes, you put on a smile as you faced the two girls; Aika and Michiko. They ran through with giggles spilling from the smirks glowing on their faces, their eyes lit up at the sight of you as they stumbled right into your body. Out of reflex, your arms wrapped around them, a smile involuntarily coming to your mouth and you almost lost balance causing more squealing to erupt, "How did you guys know I was here?"
Their smiles grew at the sound of your voice, laced with a tiny amount of laughter and they recomposed themselves in front of you, "We followed you silly!"
Aika had yelled it in a obvious tone and Michiko nodded along in a wild motion, "We wanted to make sure you were okay. You were so awesome back there! Ryusei was always such an asshole!"
You couldn't help chuckling along, silently agreeing for the most part. They fell silent with you and saw Kageyama serving Hinata and how the ball flew. At once they had yelled out in amazement when the ball was gone before their eyes. You couldn't help smiling out of pride for the two first years, "What the hell was that~! Oh my god that was so cool!!!"
Hinata grew red, scratching his wild orange hair as he stumbled with his words and Kageyama stiffly nodded gratefully for the compliments, he was so humble towards his elders- it was adorable.
"(Y/N)-senpai!"
A yell; it was Nishinoya's voice, caught everyone's attention and suddenly the door of the gym was smacked open again, "Oi! Be careful!"
Daichi was behind with Asahi and Sugawara beside him and right next to Yuu was Tanaka as Kiyoko stood slightly behind Sugawara.
Ahh.. Heat was rising to your cheeks as you quickly remembered what you had done, what you had said. The look on Ryusei's face and the faces of his friends- they looked horrified. Ryusei looked angry but his eyes were soft, it stung your heart to think, to remember it. Ryusei's was frowning, he was in a rage but although his brows were furrowed so angrily, his eyes were... melted- it seemed. His eyes were glossy and shaking too, trembling. He looked.. sad; it was the only word you could really think to describe it, Ryusei looked upset and not worth what he went through.
You didn't want to go through that either though. A whole week of going through rumours and selfish people asking stupid things without considering your feelings, it made you angry as well. No one deserves it but it happened and it was your fault. What or who else could have made your relationship fall apart? Of course it was because of you, because you couldn't continue to reciprocate the feelings to the boy you thought you had given your heart to. He dealt with you, knowing full well of what was apart of the package and told you things too, meaningful things but it happened again.
You had wondered why you thought this one would be different. Your brother would never cease to remind you of your mistake, how naive and stupid you were being but you didn't want to prove him right. You didn't want to have him say those words as if it was just a little game, 'I told you, didn't I?'
It wasn't something childish and meaningless to you, he always thought you weren't mature enough but the emotions were real.
'I said that this would happen, just like with the others too- you should've listened to me.'
"Ah~ sorry Daichi! Heh- (Y/N)-senpai? Are you alright?"
To this, Aiko and Michiko also turned to face you after they had seen who was at the door. Kiyoko looked alarmed as the male third years were silenced with a grim look upon their faces. They weren't mad; just yet, but they knew the gist of what you were thinking, they had been around long enough to realise your situation.
Hinata and Kageyama felt a little awkward, still on the court behind the conflict as they didn't see the raw emotion showing on your face. Nishinoya and Tanaka were as always, growling with their canines sharpened. Their eyes seemed to glow red; obviously your imagination and they stood in front of you like guard dogs waiting for their awaited command.
"Ah... Aha- Haha I'm okay, seriously, b-but thank god it's Friday, right..?"
It was in the way your face seemed to crack and shatter into a crooked and forced smile, an awkward grin with lowered eyes that were undoubtedly filled with tears. It was in the way your voice had cracked when attempting to lighten the mood and take the attention off of yourself- it broke their hearts a little, each and every one of them, one by one.
They knew the rumours; the ones that occurred just when you were a first year and they knew the affect it had- no one knew the root but nor did you, they didn't know the true extent of the pain you dealt with- but they still stuck with you. They were really.. They were really great.
Classes zoomed on, Friday began slowing down everyones brain and the teachers knew it was something that happened a lot so they didn't really mind. Class after class came lunch and then the last classes happened and you didn't want to work at all. You avoided everyone even though classmates still slapped your shoulders in appreciation to your little drama show but no words were exchanged; your your side that is, people would randomly yell out to you but they we're ignored and then scolded for disrupting the class.
The final siren rang, Aika and Michiko were in a jam as they weren't sure whether to comfort you and walk you out or if they should've left you be. You had told them previously that you didn't mind being alone sometimes but they had to see you laughing for a solid ten minutes to be convinced that you were really okay.
They; thankfully, let you be and when you didn't glance back at them after exiting the gates of the school, they nodded towards Daichi, Sugawara and Asahi in reassurance.
Your school bag was light, bringing school work to your house wasn't your forte as you'd just copy the work assigned the period before it was due. The sun shined on your back and a familiar voice called your name, "(Y/N)!"
They let you know where they were, on the side of the road where other people were parked too and there he was standing outside the open door of the drivers seat to your family car. He got back inside after he saw you notice him and turned the car back on prompting your steps to widen, your arms to move faster by your sides to get into the passengers seat, "I could've walked home."
"Hello to you too," He nodded, glancing around for people before he took off, "Kansan asked if I could get you. What, you wanted to walk with Ryuichi.. Ryota?"
Sighing, you had shifted in the seat as your brother shifted from first gear straight to second as he left the school area, "It's Ryusei.. and.. we broke up.."
Mumbling had become something you were accustomed to when receiving one of your brothers wise and 'loving' lectures, he didn't stop until he knew that he had been understood, "What?"
"We broke up."
Louder, perhaps a bit too loud but he didn't mind, care, it was all the same. He let out a chuckle, the smile growing on his face and his hand left the gear stick to happily grab your knee, squeezing a little before taking his hand away, "Finally!"
