Chapter Twenty Two

The hotels in America don't seem as fancy as the ones we stayed at in Europe, but they were still much better than anything I'm used to. The views of the docks and piers, and the food is amazing. But I had never been to New Jersey before, so this was also a new experience.

It was still dark when we got there, but luckily not as cold. We found our hotel and immediately all went to bed. I woke up around 1:30 and was surprised to see Angus awake. He was sitting on the balcony smoking, watching whatever was going on outside.

I went outside with him, draping a blanket over my shoulders. Cars drove beneath us and birds flew over the ocean which was still a ways off. "Rain keeps fallin', rain keeps fallin', down, down, down..." I sat in the chair next to him and he quickly glanced over. "How long have you been there?"

"Just sat down." He looked a bit flustered to be caught singing.

"Oh," he said quietly, still staring at me.

"I can leave if you want." I stood up. "I didn't mean to intrude on you, if you want to be alone-"

"No!" he said grabbing my hand before I could leave. He pulled me back to sit on the chair. "No, I-was just-don't leave," he said just above a whisper. I nodded and he let go of my hand. I sat back down.

"It wasn't bad you know."

"...what?" he asked confused.

"Your song."

"Oh...have you heard it?"

"Yeah, Breakfast Club."

"Radio." We both sat there watching people walk up and down the street and some flurries resting over rooftops. "You sleep well?"

"Yeah. Much better here than on the plane. Did you sleep okay?"

"...no, not really..." He inhaled the smoke and shifted a bit. "'ve been havin' a bit of trouble with sleep lately. Don't ask me why, I don't know myself."

"How long has this been going on for?"

"I don't know..."

"Angus..." He looked at me and I gave him a knowing look. He smiled.

"Only since-since..." He sighed. "Since you first got here."

"That was a long time ago Angus! Why didn't you say anything?"

"I didn't think it had anything to do with you!"

"Maybe it doesn't, but that doesn't mean-"

"No, it does."

"What?"

"It does have to do with you. Trust me."

"But-but you said you didn't know..."

"Hoped you wouldn't catch that," he smiled.

"Well whatever troubles I caused you, I'm really sorry," I said.

"It's not a trouble really, I shouldn't have worded it that way. It's just-I think about you a lot you know, an' sometimes, you know it's hard to sleep." I leaned back in my chair. "At first I thought it was just a bout of insomnia or somethin', but I noticed a pattern. That's when I figured, you know." We sat there a few minutes. What could I say to that?

"When's the next show?" I asked quietly.

"Tomorrow. Today's our sleepy day. Not that I'll get any," he laughed. I smiled along, but I still felt guilty.

"Angus, I honestly don't want you to lose sleep over me."

"What are you so worried for? I'm the one losin' it, you shouldn't be so scared."

"'M not scared," I mumbled.

"Mm-hmm, sure. Not that I mind thinkin' about you anyway." He reached his hand out to me and scooted over in his chair. "Come over here then." I stared at him. "I'm a little guy, there's plenty a' room." I stood up and walked over. He rearranged the blanket so that it was over both of us and put an arm around me. His cigarette was crushed and placed on a table next to him. He sighed in content and continued to look out in front of us. "Hannah?"

"Hmm?" He didn't say anything.

"Hannah."

"Yes?" I looked over at him. He had a thoughtful look on his face.

"Hannah, I-have you ever seen something, you've never seen before, and were curious about it, but could never get close enough to really see it?" I'll tell you I've never seen this side of him before. Again what could I say?

"I don't know." He sighed.

"Guess I don't either." A few minutes passed. "Will you recognize me, call my name or walk on by..." he sang, turning to smile at me. "Rain keeps fallin', rain keeps fallin' down, down, down, down..." I started to laugh a little which made him laugh too. "That bad huh?" A woman jogged down the street.

"She thought so, look at her run." He laughed again.

"Better stick to guitar then. Speaking of guitar, you ever learn to play? Not a random question, I remember you said that you were playin' a little."

"No unfortunately."

"That is unfortunate. Can't have that now, can we?"
