Chapter Twenty
October 26th 1996
It was our last day in Spain. Later that afternoon Malcolm wanted to take me out somewhere to talk. Like we used to. "Where you guys off to?"
"Just out for a talk. Don't worry Ang, I'll bring her back in one piece," Malcolm assured. We walked out to the streets, which were beautiful by the way, and just wandered. "It's been a while since we talked," he said. "Ya' know, like this I mean."
"We used to talk all the time," I agreed.
"Yeah. Before we got too famous or when we weren't on a tour."
"And when I was even here."
"Yeah that too. You enjoyin' yourself here? Or you ready to get back?"
"It's always nice to get back home but I really like staying with you guys."
"Well we like havin' you here. So. I probably shouldn't be askin' you this, but how many albums we got left to make?"
"About... three I think?"
"That's it?"
"Well the next one's out in another four years or so."
"Man we got a ways to go. Everyone still going, or was there another-death?"
"Well, no, not yet."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean no one's died yet, but-"
"But what?"
"I don't know if I should tell you..."
"Why not?"
"Because it's future stuff. You even said yourself you probably shouldn't ask."
"But if someone died we need to know."
"It's not like you could prevent this."
"We could have prevented Bon from dying if you had told us."
"It doesn't work that way." He sighed.
"Can I at least know? Is it me?"
"...yes." Malcolm shifted a bit in his spot.
"What-what happens?"
"You just-you sure you wanna know?"
"I, don't know." We continued down the street. "No, I guess not."
"Okay." It was several minutes before we spoke again.
"America's next on our list."
"Yeah."
"Reminds me of the first time you visited us. Except we're going without Lucy. And Mike. It's like going back in time again," Malcolm said.
"Well technically for me it is."
"Yeah. Hope it won't be as hot next time."
"It's October to December right?"
"Yeah."
"Shouldn't be too hot then."
"Did Angus tell you where we're going?"
"No, but he said something about a surprise," I said.
"Oh, I see," Malcolm smiled. "I see how it is."
"You know what it is?"
"Maybe not to the full extent, but I feel he's got a few tricks up his shorts."
We circled a few blocks and came back that afternoon. Once again we all met in Brian's room and I stayed fully awake this time. "He had the car out back, just circled around for ten minutes, nobody believed he should have been inside," Malcolm laughed. The group joined him as he told a funny story about Bon.
"Mal, you remember the girl he had in Florida?" Phil asked.
"Oh yeah. Man she was off her marbles wasn't she?"
"What was her problem?" Brian asked.
"Just-got pissed at him for going drinking, or buying somethin' for himself without tellin' her or..."
"Then she started makin' her moves elsewhere and she dumped him," Angus smiled.
"When was this?"
"Uh, '76? I think?" Angus said. Brian whistled.
"Phil, you got any smokes?" Cliff asked checking his pockets.
"Ah, I'm out."
"We'd better get more then," Cliff said. They both stood up from the couch and headed for the door.
"Wait I'm comin'," Angus said standing up. He ruffled my hair then left with the other two. I turned to face forward and saw Malcolm and Brian smiling at me smugly.
"What?" I smiled back.
"Don't think we didn't see that lass," Brian laughed.
"See what?" Malcolm shook his head.
"Nothin' darlin', don't listen to us."
