Chapter Thirty Two
"Alright, 'nother free day. What's everyone want to do?" Phil asked in his hotel room. It had been snowing in Montana the whole time so we didn't do much. Now in Oregon all the snow had turned to rain and we decided to head out now while it was still paused.
"Is it even safe? Feels like everything's hittin' us," Brian joked.
"Yeah, so much excitement in one week."
"We could go bowling," Malcolm suggested.
"Such small men holding and rolling such big balls?" Phil laughed.
"I'm serious, that sounds fun."
"I'm up for it, but you guys better not cheat like last time," Angus said.
"We didn't cheat. You were just terrible," Cliff remarked.
"Rigged the pins is what you did."
"Just one gutterball after the other," Malcolm laughed. We found a place that afternoon and started a friendly game. But it didn't end that way. Malcolm and Angus got pretty competitive with each other and really just played by themselves. Watching the pair and placing bets became a game for the rest of us.
"It's your call Mal," Angus said.
"Okay. How's this," Malcolm said. "We'll split in teams. You, Cliff, and Phil, me, Brian, and Hannah."
"Mal, that's a terrible idea."
"Hannah's on my team Ang, cry me a river."
"That's not what I-"
"Alright, game on." We got there at 1:30 now it was going on eight. The game wasn't over till the Young brothers said it was. Our team was ahead until the end when Cliff kept getting strikes. Eventually the last turn and we were at a tie.
It was Angus' turn, so I sat down with Brian and Malcolm to talk. They both seemed pretty eager to settle down once the tour was over, couldn't blame them. As fun as it was, it was hard work. Not to mention these past few weeks had been completely draining. Brian began telling a funny story from his childhood which had us all near tears. The other three came over to us a little later.
"So?"
"You guys won," Phil said.
"That's what I like to hear," Brian smiled.
"Angus here got a little distracted if you know what I mean," Cliff said.
"What happened Ang?" Malcolm asked.
It was Angus' turn. The last round and they were at a tie. Cliff and Phil stood behind him, watching. Angus scanned the room and saw the opposing team chatting it up. All three were laughing up a storm. Hannah especially. He smiled to himself, happy that she was happy. He loved to hear her laugh, and he hadn't heard it in a while. Angus soon forgot he was supposed to be playing a game. "Throw the ball Angus!" Cliff and Phil yelled behind him. Angus snapped out of his thoughts and let the ball roll down the lane. Nothing.
"Whoops," he mumbled.
"What's got in to ya', huh?" Phil asked.
"'M sorry, it slipped."
"We know, before that," Cliff said.
"Nothin' I was just-nothin'." Angus shook his head.
"Nothin'," Angus said. "Thought I saw something, ball just slipped."
"Slipped. Right." We went back to the hotel and Angus got his guitar and an amp. He wanted to teach me a bit more and talk before bed.
You're getting better," he noted after my twelfth try.
"Gee, thanks."
"I'm serious. You're getting better. So. What are we gonna do tomorrow?"
"I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know? I thought you had this whole trip planned out!" he smiled.
"Not in the slightest. Maybe that's a good thing."
"Aw, come on now." I laughed. "Well Brian really wants to see the West Coast. Ya' know, since he lives in Florida."
"How far is it?"
"From here, quite a ways," he shrugged. "But hey, we have a car."
"So to the beach?"
"To the beach."
