Chapter Thirty Seven
Later that evening the boys all piled into our hotel room. Angus had left a while ago and they were all about to go to the bar they talked about. I was staying behind of course. "You sure you won't come lass?" Brian asked.
"I'm sure, bars ain't my thing."
"They ain't my thing either," Phil said. "I'm their thing." Everyone laughed. They all left and I was left alone in my hotel room. I sat on the couch and left my mind to wander. I thought about Vee back home. She too had gotten her own place, but we were still like sisters. She'd freak out if she found out I time traveled again. Bombard me with questions, ask about the band, want to find Mike and kill him. Better tell her. I'll get a kick out of her reaction.
About an hour later the phone rang. I had no clue who was calling, but I guessed it could be a fan who found our number. The band had been getting some lately. Knowing it'd be rude and unprofessional not to answer, I picked it up. "Hello?"
"Hey Hannah." I was surprised to hear Angus himself on the other end. I guess he was a fan of himself, but still. "You're in the room right?"
"Yeah."
"Okay, come outside to the parking lot. Next to the big glow in the dark billboard."
"Why?" He didn't answer. He hung up. Well, now what? Maybe it was my surprise. He's never called me to meet him anywhere before, so who knows? I grabbed my (Malcolm's) jacket and headed out of the hotel.
The wind blew my hair in front of my face and I could barely see anything. Couldn't even see the glow in the dark billboard he was talking about. I circled around the parking lot seeing if I couldn't find anything. "It's dangerous for a young lady like yourself to be out here alone," a voice said right behind me. I whirled around to see Angus grinning at me. "You should have yourself an escort."
"What's all this about? Where's the billboard you talked about?" He pulled me over and brought up his watch. He silently counted down the seconds and pointed up. Nothing happened. I looked at him.
"Try that again." He tried again and again nothing. "Well I thought it would go off," he smiled.
"What are you doing out here?"
"You remember in the seventies, on the tour? When the guys went out to a bar, and we went on a little date?"
"Yeah..."
"Well, since we were playing in Oregon, I thought I'd take you out again."
"You're taking me out on a date." He looked down.
"Well, not-I mean kind of, I guess-I guess it's whatever you want to call it."
"So where're we going?"
"What do you mean? Doesn't this place look familiar?" he gestured around him. I looked around and shook my head. "Oh. Well Mal and I looked up where this place is in the phone book. Got directions and came back twenty one years later."
"So, this is where we were the first time?"
"Yep. Thought we could go on our night of fun again. That is if you want to."
"Of course I want to! But, I do wish you would have told me, I could have dressed in something better," I said. I was in a tee shirt and jeans with a jacket on.
"You look great, look at me then," he smiled. He had on his school uniform.
"That's sure inconspicuous. Why'd you wear that?"
Didn't really have anything else this uh, formal."
"Why'd you get to dress up and not me?"
"You don't need to look nice for me, or anyone for that matter. I on the other hand, could use some work."
"But were the shorts really necessary?"
"If I don't want to get arrested, then yes." I laughed and shook my head.
"I just meant it's freezing!"
"Oh yeah. Well, it wouldn't look the same without them." He took off his hat and placed it on my head. "Ready love?" Just as we were on our way the billboard light came on. "A-ha! There it goes!"
First we went to a movie just like we did in 1975. This movie was a lot newer though, but still old compared to my time. After it was over he took me for a walk down the street. "Holdin' up over there?"
"Yeah."
"Havin' fun?" I smiled.
"Yeah."
"Good," he smiled back. "You know what day is coming up."
"What?"
"Christmas! You didn't forget Christmas, did you?"
"No! I wasn't thinking about it but I didn't forget."
"Hmm. I did until just now." We laughed and crossed the street.
"I remember last time we did this it started raining," I said.
"Wasn't supposed to rain today, but-I think we're almost there..."
"Where are we going?"
"Come on." He took my hand and led me up the road to a building. It was empty inside, except a pool table in the middle of the room... The walls were painted red with a darkwood floor. A hall jutted out to the side with bathrooms and a vending machine. "Recognize this place?"
"It looks like that pool room we went to to dry off."
"It is."
"It's been renovated."
"Yep. Keeping up with the times." Angus got the table set up and handed me a stick. "Ready?"
"You gonna win this time?"
"I'll try, but I'm a bit out of practice."
"Same here."
"Favorite flower."
"What?"
"Favorite flower."
"Mine?" He nodded. "Iris...or white roses."
"Hmm. Okay. Your turn."
"For what?"
"One to hit the ball, and two to ask me a question."
"Just like we did in-"
"I know," he smiled. He has a memory like an elephant.
"Man, you really went all out didn't you?"
"Course." We played and asked for about half an hour. I won, not to brag. "I wasn't completely on my game that time."
"Mm-hmm, sure."
"I wasn't!"
"Just like that bowling game?" He blushed.
"Y-yeah. Exactly."
"We'll play again, maybe I'll let you win." He laughed and set everything up again. He won the next time without any help.
"You let me win?"
"Nope, that was all you."
"Good. I've earned my stars then."
"You earned your stars twenty three years ago joining your brother's band."
"You think so?"
"I know so."
"Gee, thanks." We put everything away and headed back outside. "One more stop. Okay?" he smiled. I smiled back and adjusted the hat he gave me. He took me to the park we went to before. New flowers had been planted and a silver gate surrounded the area. Angus looped his arm with mine and led me down the path. This town was still not busy after all these years. The pool room was open, but empty. The park, open but empty. This had to be more Eastern Oregon, nobody was here. Angus walked through the park like he knew where he was going. Like he had something in mind. Finally we made it to a small pond surrounded by trees and a bench. "How's this for an impression?" he asked.
"It's great! I don't remember it at all, but-"
"We didn't come here last time. I mean we did, but this wasn't here. That is, this is new." We sat down on the bench and watched a few fish swim around and some birds fly in and search for food. I stood up and picked up a stone to toss in. "You didn't get any skips," Angus said coming over.
"I saw that. I can't skip rocks." Angus picked one up.
"Watch this." He tossed it in, and a single splash sounded. I looked at him. "I can't skip 'em either, just wanted you to watch."
"So what are we doing about Mike?" I asked.
"He's going back to jail to serve the rest of his time, then to prison for a while for unrelated charges."
"What?"
"Remember those drugs he was on?"
"Yeah."
"The man was on meth." I leaned back against a tree and crossed my arms.
"That's disgusting. What's worse is that he kissed me. And potentially Justice. Looks like he's getting his justice after all," I smiled at my joke.
"He kissed you?!" Angus asked looking at me. He looked rather upset.
"Yeah, when he got me into his motel with him. And everytime I saw him before that his breath smelled. Bad." Angus came up to me looking kind of sorry.
"He shouldn't have done that to you. You really shouldn't kiss people if you don't love them."
"Unless you want to get punched," I smiled. "But yeah, I'm glad I never have to see him agai-" I didn't get to finish before he put his lips on mine. He had one hand holding my hat aside and the other was on my cheek, brushing it with his thumb. His lips repeatedly left mine only to quickly find them again. He had me backed up against the tree, but still came a little closer.
After a while he pulled back panting and eyes still closed. I stood there completely confused. I had a lot of questions for him. Trying to catch my breath I asked him. "W-what was that? Y-you just, you can't just-you're married!"
"I know-"
"Angus, we're in a public place, what if someone came by and-and saw or-"
"I know, that's why I-"
"You can't just go around kissing people!"
"I understand that you're-"
"No, you don't understand! You don't understand, you're married, and we're out and about in public and you just decide to-" Angus came at me a second time, this time planting a single, rough kiss on me. He pulled back panting again, looking a little frustrated with me.
"That was to get you to shut up. Yes I do understand. I'm the one who's married aren't I? Now look. I know I'm married, I know we're out in the open, but no one's here, no one saw us. I shouldn't have done that. I should regret it and leave you. But I don't regret it. And I'm not leaving you. I know all that and I do understand. But Hannah..." He lifted my head in his hands so I looked directly at him. His eyes held some sadness, but mostly determination. "Hannah, I'm still so in love with you."
He closed his eyes and kissed me again like the first time. His left hand took my hat off completely and his right hand settled in my hair, running his fingers through it. He took a breath before each kiss so they'd all last a while. His left hand went to my back so I assumed he dropped the hat. My heart was racing, he'd never gone that far before. Besides 1975 that night, here he was at his most intense.
After putting slightly more pressure into it he pulled away, panting harder this time. He pressed his forehead against mine looking into my eyes. "Why do you gotta be a time traveler?" he whispered.
