Chapter Thirty Nine

My eyes fluttered open and looked around. I was in the bedroom alright, but something was off. I glanced down and saw an arm wrapped around me. In fact I saw two arms. Angus was holding me in his sleep, and my arms were wrapped around him as well. My nose was resting on Angus' lips, and he was out cold. I couldn't move too well being so embraced and I had to stay there until he woke up. I was a little confused about what happened. He took me out, flipping kissed me three times, and we danced...is that all that happened?

I had spaced out for a while then came back to feel a hand rub my back. I looked up and saw Angus looking ahead, then at me. "Morning lovely," he smiled. I gave him a worried look.

"What happened last night?" He shrugged and hugged me tighter.

"A lot. I, I didn't try anything if that's what you're worried about." I nodded. He sat up and held me in his lap. "Hey, look at me." I looked up and he was at eye level with me. "Everything I said last night? I meant it you know." I nodded and glanced down again. I figured he meant it, he's a pretty straightforward guy. Now Vee had to know about all this. She'd never shut up.

Angus tilted my chin up and leaned in. He kissed me again and put his hand to my face, the other still on my back. I backed up a little but he pulled me right back in again. Then he pulled away suddenly, hands up. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I mean no I'm not sorry, but I'm sorry for surprising you like that, I mean you just woke up and..." I didn't tell him I'd been awake a while.

"You said you wouldn't do that again." He held a finger up.

"I never said that. I said I'd never try anything on you again. I never said I wouldn't kiss you again," he whispered. I gotta say, my heart was racing at how close he was. He just stared at me a while and eventually gave me a smile. I was pulled to his chest in a warm hug and he sighed. "My girl..."

"Why'd you do it?"

"...what?"

"I mean why did you kiss me?" I asked bluntly. "Four times." He didn't answer right away.

"...couldn't help myself. Though one was to keep your mouth shut," he joked.

"I was confused, I had questions to ask."

"And I had questions to answer. You're mad at me ain't you?"

"No, just confused."

"How do you think I feel?" he laughed.

"It's been years, why do we still feel this way?" I asked. "I've been away, and you've obviously moved on."

"I wouldn't say moved on," Angus mumbled.

"A-and I don't, I mean, you know, and you-you like that stuff. I don't, never have. You ought to be with someone who likes that stuff too." Angus frowned.

"I oughta be, yeah," he nodded. "Even if they're mean, bitter, they don't listen, they don't understand or care, and especially if they don't love me back. As long as they can go all night, I should be with them."

"I didn't say that," I frowned.

"No, but you seem to be forgetting why I fell in love with you in the first place." I looked down.

"'Cause I didn't know." Then I looked up and smiled. "You think I'm mean and bitter?"

"Not all the time, you may be a little bitter right now."

"Am not!"

"A little..."

"No, none." There was silence. Angus leaned back against the wall and held me.

"A little." I sighed. "Don't worry, in the morning, I'm twice as bitter as you."

"The morning, afternoon, evening, then you fall asleep."

"You think you're real funny don't ya'?" I grinned. "Think you're real funny?" He started tickling me and in my struggle I tickled him back. "None of that, that's not fair!" We were both so busy laughing we didn't hear the door opening.

"Uh..." Malcolm said standing there in the doorway of the bedroom. Angus and I stopped laughing. There was an awkward silence. "So...having fun are we?"

"How'd you get in?" Angus asked.

"Left your keys in my pocket. Which reminds me." Malcolm pulled the keys out and tossed them over. Angus caught them over my head, eyes never leaving his brother's.

"What are you doin' here?"

"Just came to tell you we were back."

"Back?"

"The bar Ang? Don't tell me you've forgotten already?"

"No, no just slipped my mind."

"I see," Malcolm smiled. "A lot of things slipped my mind too. Well, enough about me then. So. What'd you two do last night, hmm?" He sat criss-cross on the foot of the bed his head on his hands.

"Nothin' Mal," Angus sighed.

"Well," Malcolm scoffed. "Doesn't look like nothin'." He gestured to us. "If you're not finished I can come back later."

"Bloody hell Mal, you sound like Phil!" Malcolm wasn't acting right. He knew when and when not to make a joke. And right now he was pushing the boundaries.

"Hey I'm nothin' like Phil, I can finish a whiskey," he smiled.

"Leave Mal."

"Okay, okay. Do your thing." He walked out and left the hotel room.

"My God," Angus sighed running a hand through his hair.

"What's up with him?"

"He's completely hungover, if not still drunk. Told him not to, hasn't done that in a while. God knows what the others did."

"Should probably go check on them," I said getting up. Angus grabbed me and pulled me down again, gave me a big kiss on the cheek then ran out the room before I could. "Hey, no fair!" I chased him out of the hotel room and down the hall to Malcolm's room. Angus knocked on the door until I pulled him away.

"Malcolm! Hurry up, she's bending my arm!" he laughed while I held his arm behind him.

"What the bloody wankin' 'ell are you two doin'?" a voice asked behind us. Brian came over looking tired and holding a water bottle.

"Malcolm's hungover, we're checking on him," I explained.

"Whassa matter with you?" Brian asked Angus.

"She's got my arm a bad way." I let him go and he rubbed his arm. "You're gonna pay for that."

"I don't know what you're goin' on about, but he seems fine to me," Brian said drinking his water. "Might just be that I'm hungover too, but... Hey where were you two last night? Tried to phone, ya' didn't answer."

"Probably asleep," Angus said.

"Or still at the park," Brian added.

"How did you know..." I started. He smiled.

"We all knew about it, Angus told us. We knew you weren't coming to the bar. Speaking of which, how'd it go Ang? She say yes?"

"Shh! Didn't ask her yet!" Angus whisper yelled.

"Ohhh," Brian said nodding.

"Ask me what?" I asked.

"Nothing lass," Brian smiled.

"Tell ya' about it later, we gotta look for the other guys," Angus said pulling me down the hall.

Not yet. Angus thought. Not yet. After last night's surprise there really wasn't the time for more, so he never got the chance. Now he'd have to find more time, and the courage.
