Chapter Thirty Five
The next day was showtime. I woke up to see Angus still asleep. And everyone else gone... No blankets, no instruments, nothing. I woke Angus up to show him.
"What?" he mumbled.
"Where is everyone?"
"What do you mean?"
"Look, they're gone!" Angus sat up annoyed and glanced around.
"The hell did they go?" I went to the beach to see if they had gone there but all I saw were small waves hitting sand. "Ain't here either?" Angus came up behind me.
"No."
"Let's check if the car is still there. If not, we're screwed." We picked up our blankets and headed for the lot where our car stood. "Oh thank God." The car was also filled with sleeping band members.
"Oh hello," Phil said when I opened the door. "What are you two doin' up?"
"Looking for you! What are you doing in here?" I asked.
"Sleeping."
"In the car?" Angus asked.
"Yeah, it was cold and rainy."
"But you left us outside."
"Don't look at me, Mal thought we should." Phil pointed at Malcolm who was asleep in the driver's seat.
"Why'd he just leave us out there?"
"Beats me. Hey Mal!" Phil hit him over the head. "We got a question for you."
"Fuck Phil, what do you want?"
"Your brother has a question."
"...oh. Hey Angus, uh, sleep well?"
"We slept fine. But why'd you all go to the car?"
"You and Hannah fell asleep, and we were cold. Didn't want to wake you, came in here."
"Scared us to death," I muttered. "Thought you left without us."
"It's too early to be up, let alone drive anywhere. It's only-" Malcolm looked at his watch. "Shit!"
"What?" Phil asked.
"Fucking noon!" Malcolm threw the blanket off him and buckled the seatbelt. "Get in and get everyone else up!" Angus and I climbed in while Phil woke everyone else up. It was hard getting situated with Malcolm's maniacal driving.
"What the hell are you doing?" Cliff asked.
"We're leaving that's what. Supposed to be at rehearsal by noon!"
"Crap, everyone in here?"
"One, two three..." Angus counted. "Yeah, all's here."
"Good, 'cause I'm not stopping for anything." That was an hour ago before we got on the highway and got stuck in traffic. A lot of traffic.
"What did you say Mal about stopping?" Phil teased. Malcolm muttered something under his breath and gripped the steering wheel. A classic, upbeat tune was playing on the radio. Cliff hesistantly pointed at it.
"You uh, mind if I changed the channel here Mal?" Malcolm made a fist and punched the button. The music stopped. "Okay."
Three hours later we returned to the hotel and ran to the stadium not even putting our beach supplies away. It was 4:30 and everybody involved was there waiting impatiently. The boys wasted no more time getting the instruments ready. "Where the hell were you?!"
"At the beach, get this plugged in?" Malcolm answered.
"You were supposed to be here by noon!"
"Slept in late I guess."
"Show starts in three hours!"
"I can hear that mate, get the damn mic set up!" They rehearsed what they could, but didn't go back to the hotel for lack of time. Quite a common theme that day.
The boys played the show right on time yet again. Even sans practice they played great. Angus got the crowd riled up time and time again. It was fun to watch from the side, and I felt bad Justice ever got to miss this. I tell you though, these concerts? Are loud. My ears'll ring forever.
We walked back to our hotel and finally put everything in the car away. Malcolm had to return it so we all hung outside the hotel. It didn't rain, but it was still windy. The guys all had cigarettes to keep them warm, but I, not smoking, had my-toothpick. And I lost it a long time ago. Good thing I was used to this climate.
"So the first part of the tour's finally over, eh fellas?" Brian said as everyone cheered. "Alright, we got four more days to spend here, we should celebrate all we can."
"We can all go out to eat tomorrow, then go out to a bar the next day," Cliff said.
"Sounds fun. You want to go to a bar kid?" Phil asked.
"Well," I laughed. "Not especially no. But wherever is fine." We continued talking and we went inside a few minutes after Malcolm got back. "You glad the tour's over?" I asked Angus.
"Yeah. Of course I love doing it, but the traveling you know. And this has been a pretty crazy tour."
"Got that right. I need a rest."
"You can't rest now, we've still got more places to see!"
"But I'm sleepy..."
"Okay, you can rest this minute but I meant in general."
"...but, I'm sleepy..." Angus smiled.
"So go to bed."
"Too...weak..." I slowly lay on the floor sprawled out. "Can't...move..." Angus lay down next to me.
"Oh Jesus, this can't be more comfortable than your bed."
"It's not."
"Your surprise is coming you know."
"Reeeeaaaalllyyy?"
"Yeah."
"Can I have it now?"
"Nope." I sighed.
"Guess I'd better go to bed then." I sat up but was pulled back down by Angus who had me trapped.
"Gotcha again," he grinned.
"What's the big idea?"
"Nothing, just a whim." I looked at him as I reached up and tickled his neck. He loosened his hold on me as he laughed and I ran to my room.
Angus watched her as she escaped from his grip and ran away. She really is a nutjob.
