Chapter Sixty Four
The band didn't go back to the hotel until after the concert. They got back at 10:35 and Angus was gonna head straight for Hannah's room. Until he saw a swarm of cops and electric companies around the building.
"What the hell?" Brian asked as they stepped out of the cars.
"Someone's done it now," Phil said. The group made for the entrance but a security man blocked them off.
"Power's down. Everyone's been evacuated, no one's getting in."
"But our friend is in there," Malcolm said.
"No he ain't."
"She," Angus corrected.
"He, she, zie, do re mi, whatever they are, they ain't in there." He moved them along.
"He's charming," Cliff said.
"You think Hannah's been evacuated?" Brian asked.
"I don't know, but we'd better find her," Angus said. They made their way through the crowds of people but couldn't find that certain one.
"You don't think Hannah had anything to do with this, do you?" Phil asked Angus.
"No, of course not." He looked around again. "Not on purpose anyway..."
Later that evening Georganne met up with the boys. She'd been looking for Hannah ever since the evacuation, but gave up when she saw her being taken away by police. "I don't know where they took her, but she's somewhere with the police," she told them.
"Shit, which direction they go?" Cliff asked.
"I don't know, down the boulevard but there's a number of police stations down there."
"We'll find her Ang," Malcolm assured his brother. They took the car in the direction Georganne told them. Rain pounded against the windshield and the moonless night covered them.
It felt like days being in that jail cell with Donna. I stood at the barred door away from her smoke and it eventually burned out. The clock on the wall said 11:50, but it had been saying 11:50 for the past hour. The concert was over by now and the boys must have known I was gone. "Your man on his way?" Donna called behind me.
"He's not my man," I sighed. "And I don't know. He doesn't even know where I am."
"Where is he?"
"He was playing a concert here, they should be back by now."
"He cute?"
"What?"
"You got cotton in your ears? I said is he cute."
"I don't know!" I blushed. I turned away from her and rested my forehead on the iron. Rain poured from a leak into a cup nearly full. Donna tapped her foot to the floor. I hit my nails on the bars and crudely sang a bit to myself. "Freeze! said the man cruisin' the beat... you get your hands up, spread your feet..."
Donna began humming to herself patting her knees. She had great rhythm and I sung a bit louder. "It's a shakedown, another nervous shakedown!"
I could almost hear the band playing the song on the album. The lyrics fit perfectly with our current situation. Before I knew it, I saw Angus walking up to me, a grin on his face. "You're here!" He gripped my hands through the bars.
"Never in a million years would I guess you would get yourself arrested," he laughed.
"Neither did I. I don't even know what I did."
"We found out by a bilingual guard. He said a lady called in about someone breaking into a hotel room through a window?" He eyed me. "And this little bugger decided to cut the power in the whole hotel. Everyone was evacuated for investigation."
"Oh, did I do that?" I laughed.
"You are an evil little mastermind," he said patting my hand. Donna slowly came up to us.
"This your boyfriend princess?"
"He's not-"
"Hey, I'm Angus," he said reaching his hand through to shake hers.
"So I've heard." She inspected him. "Yeah, sure you're cute." She walked back to the bench. Angus gave me a sly smile and I blushed.
"None of that is the point," I said. "The point is how am I getting out?"
"Well I would pay your bail, but none of us have any money. Imagine that."
"Why are you here then?"
"Visitin' time. I got about seven minutes left," Angus said.
"So what do we do?"
"Well the rule is that I visit you, leave, then come back the next day. You're supposed to stay here ten days for breaking and entering, and destruction of public property and residence." He leaned in close and whispered, "Good thing I don't follow the rules."
Angus rounded the corner and spied on the guards. One man sat at a desk while the other stood with a coffee cup. Both talking in Spanish. The keys hung on a nail on the wall by the sitting guard's head. The guard with the coffee cup laughed and started walking in Angus' direction. The nearest hiding spot was a trash can. Being a small man, he could fit. But he didn't appreciate the chewing gum on his shoe.
The man at the desk began writing stuff on a note then pinned it to a felt board behind him. He wasn't gonna leave anytime soon. The other guard returned with Hannah by his side. They stood her at the desk and took out an ink pad. Her fingerprints were collected and she was escorted back to her cell.
"This place should really be cleaned more often-and don't be so rough!" she complained. Angus smiled. Leave it to Hannah to mouth off to someone. After a few minutes of low activity, Angus climbed out of the trash can and hid behind the wall. He saw a vent that was close to the ground, and big enough to crawl through. Another vent was behind the desk. If he could crawl through those and end up in the correct spot, he could grab the keys and free Hannah.
He pried the vent open and crawled through going in the general direction. He tried not to cough, but the dust was smothering him. Not to mention the thick cobwebs. He finally found the room where the keys were but the vent wouldn't open. When he finally did get it open, a face stared back at him.
