Chapter Seventy Five
April 22nd 1997
Our first stop of the European leg was in Greece. It was gorgeous. Crystal white buildings surrounded by sapphire seas. I bet it would look much better on the ground though.
Turbulence had shaken the plane up and I was not a fan. Angus was worse though. Afraid of heights as he was, he would not stand up while we flew through it. I thought I'd hold his hand, you know, to make him feel better. But it didn't seem he noticed.
We made it through the air pockets just fine, more or less, and headed for the airport. Angus had finally gotten out of his seat to use the bathroom. All was quiet except for the engine and Cliff and Brian playing cards and accusing the other of cheating. In no time Angus came back and sat next to me.
"This damn plane," he muttered. "Gimme that pilot's license, I want proof."
"It's not the pilot's fault Angus," I smiled. He only scoffed.
"Flew through it on purpose, that's what he did." I leaned back in my seat.
"Tell you the truth, I don't like it either."
"You scared of heights?"
"Sort of, I mean-it's not so much heights as it is-you know, falling."
"I know what you mean," he nodded. "And the higher you are, the harder the impact."
"Are you okay now?" He put his hand atop mine and squeezed it.
"A bit, yeah." He leaned closer to me, brushed my hair behind my ear, and whispered, "Thank you."
Ten minutes later we landed and headed out to the streets of Greece. Every couple of blocks we found a food cart, but not before we smelled it. Our hotel overlooked the beach and Georganne and I headed over there leaving the men to put everything away.
We packed a picnic basket and brought a towel to set our stuff on. The weather was perfect with the fair spring sky. I had bought a sundress a couple stops ago with a matching hair bow. I looked fabulous to say the least. As long as nobody saw me...
"Isn't that water beautiful?" Georganne asked adjusting her sunglasses. I nodded. "I'm gonna get in it." She kicked off her sandals and jogged out to the waves. I meanwhile put my many napkins away and pulled out the sunscreen. After all, 100 SPF just isn't enough.
"What are you doin' by yourself?" I turned to see Angus coming up beside me. Wearing the funniest shoes I've ever seen a man wear. I accidentally let him know that too. "What's so funny?"
"Nothing," I said pointing to his sandals.
"What's wrong with my shoes?" I shook my head. "You're nutty. So, anyway?" I stopped laughing. "Why're you here alone?"
"Just relaxing in the sun."
"I don't think the sun can reach you through your white coat of paint." Okay, so it was a little much. "You get sunburns easily?"
"On my feet and shoulders. Everywhere else I just tan, but I don't want one."
"You are nutty. You should go play in the water if you don't want a tan."
"Ehhhhh..." I outstretched my arm and waved my hand weakly. "Too far..."
"Might also help wash off some of that mayonnaise on you. Come on..."
"I don't know..." Angus gave me a look and trapped me in his arms as he picked me up. "Hey!"
"To the water we go!" He started skipping toward the waves and I wrapped my arms around his neck. "Hey can't you swim?"
"Ever since Lucy pushed me in that pool I've been reluctant to try," I joked.
"Okay, well I won't push you. Not on purpose," he winked. His feet hit the waves and he stepped in farther till it was up to his waist. Which wasn't far...
I let one of my hands reach down and scoop up some water to pour on Angus's head. "Here you go."
"Thanks." Angus had a fun time holding me over the water pretending to drop me only to catch me last minute. I held on to his neck all the tighter. Maybe that was part of his plan...
"I'd rather not get this dress wet, thank you very much, Young," I told him sternly.
"Yeesh, so picky. I can at least get your hair wet."
"No, no no no no!" He moved his hand higher to support my shoulders as he ducked my head back into the water. I came back out dripping wet. My hand reached to feel my hair bow. Thank goodness it was still there.
"How's that feel?"
"Take me back I've had enough."
"Aw, you're no fun," he pouted. "Besides, I didn't get a chance to play yet." He got closer to the shore and sat down in the water still holding me. "Here, I won't let you get wet." A wave came up and splashed over us. Not a huge one but enough. "Sorry," he smiled.
"Thanks a lot."
"Okay, I won't let you get wet starting now." Running footsteps and male laughter came up behind us before a bucket of water was dumped on us.
"Maybe you oughta shut up," I laughed. His eyes fluttered open as water ran down his hair into them and his mouth. I laughed harder as he spit it out.
"Maybe." Angus stumbled as he stood up and carried me back to the beach. Malcolm and Brian stood by laughing, Malcolm holding an empty bucket.
"That your bucket Malcolm?" Angus asked.
"No it's Brian's."
"Uh-huh."
"You're on sand now Ang, you can set her down now," Brian called. I looked up to see Angus blushing.
"I know that!" Angus yelled back. But he didn't set me down.
"Are you gonna set her down?" Malcolm asked.
"...yes." He didn't. Malcolm came up to us and set the bucket down.
"Angus."
"Malcolm."
"Angus."
"Malcolm."
"Hannah!" The brothers looked at me then back at each other.
"So Angus, you aware you got a spider on your shoulder?"
"What?" Angus passed me off to Malcolm as he felt up his neck and shoulders. In vain. "There ain't no spider."
"Nope," Malcolm smirked. With that he turned and ran with me in his arms.
"Hey!" I smiled at Angus over Malcolm's shoulder as he ran after us.
"Phil, catch!" Malcolm handed me off to Phil who took off in a different direction. Angus had to veer off his course to a different target. Cliff and Georganne came running up to join the fun and I was soon handed off to Cliff.
"Come on over this way!" Brian called. The couple headed his direction and Angus followed suit. He caught up with Cliff just as Brian got away a good distance. Malcolm got hold of me again and stopped running. Angus stopped too, panting. There was several yards between them.
"You tired Angus?" Malcolm teased.
"Enough of this Mal!"
"You want her? Come get her, lover boy!" Angus came running up faster than ever and snatched me from Malcolm. He held me close and nuzzled my hair.
"Mine," he smiled.
"All yours?" Malcolm grinned.
"No," we both answered. Angus smiled and kissed my forehead.
