Chapter Seventeen

Audiences shouted after them as they went backstage, all sweaty messes. The water almost ran out within ten minutes and they had to call for more. "Hey Mal, you see my extra shirt anywhere?" Angus asked glancing around.

"No, gotta keep track of my own," he smiled.

"You never lose track of what's already on your back," he answered.

"Jus' wear your white one."

"The one I threw out there?" he asked gesturing behind him with his thumb

"See, Mick's got it." Angus turned around to grab his shirt held out for him.

"Thanks Mick." McKinney nodded and headed off somewhere else. "Ah, see Mal, it's all sweaty." He held it up in front of him.

"Yeah, so are you. A perfect match."

"I guess if it's all I got," he said buttoning it. "I'm gonna check on Hannah alright?" he asked heading off.

"Hey, she doin' okay? She ever tell you?" Malcolm asked frowning.

"It's not me she doesn't like, it's Martin."

"Who?"

"That new roadie kid or something."

"Oh, Mike?"

"That's his name."

"You knew his name."

"Well?"

"What's he doing to her to harbor such unfavorable feelings?" Malcolm laughed.

"Makes her uneasy. Gets up on her ya' know, an' things like that."

"That's not good."

"No. Why I'm checking on her. She's supposed to meet up with him today to settle things." Mick came back up with all kinds of wires and an amp.

"I saw her go out before the show ended," he said. "Some young guy, drunk too, took her out."

"What?" Malcolm asked.

"Yeah, was that Mike?"

"I don't know was he?"

"If he was I wouldn't trust him. He tries to take any girl he wants and gets her to have sex with him."

"Fuck, fuck, fuck," Angus muttered.

"Where did they go?" Malcolm asked.

"Probably his motel. Always gets the cheapest thing he can find to fuck a girl in."

"Thanks again Mick, come on Mal." Angus and Malcolm ran out the back door to find whatever motel was the crappiest.

"Let's start here," Malcolm suggested when they reached an old worn down building.

"How will we find his room?"

"Don't know, search everywhere." They ran in the lobby and saw a jacket by the desk. "That's Mike's jacket ain't it?"

"I don't know, I'm not his maid." Malcolm picked it up and a key fell out of the pocket. Tossing the jacket aside he grabbed the key.

"It's his room key Ang!"

"Find his room then!" Angus followed him through the hall until they matched the key to his room. "Come on then!" Angus yelled impatiently.

"I got it, I got it!" Malcolm yelled back working the key. They shoved it open and headed straight for the nonexistant bedroom, which was really just a bed shoved to the side. Angus pulled the man off and away of what he hoped and didn't hope was Hannah. Sure enough...

Angus was standing over me helping me off the bed and pulling me away from everything. Mike tried to follow us but Malcolm stopped him. "Hold on, we're not through with you."

"She ain't yours to take, I didn't do anything wrong!" Angus stood between Mike and I, just glaring at him.

"She doesn't like your kind, what gives you the right to put your hands on her?" Malcolm asked. I could tell both were pretty pissed.

"Aren't you a hell of a lot older than her?" Mike asked Angus, ignoring Malcolm.

"That has nothing to do with it," Angus muttered.

"Bullshit, I watch you, I see the way you look at her! You can't keep your fucking hands off her either!"

"Get Hannah out of here Ang, I got this," Malcolm said. He started ripping into him about not showing up for work and getting drunk in the first place, then messing with his friends when he was clearly told to bugger off. I could still hear Malcolm's voice as Angus took me outside the building and across the street. As soon as I knew we were safe I grabbed him and held him. The whole situation scared the crap out of me and I just broke. He held tight to me too, rubbing my back a little. I could tell he was just as scared as I was.

"Hey now," he whispered. "I'm wet enough already." I looked up and noticed his shirt and hair were soaked.

"What happened?"

"I played a concert love. You should have come, it was great. At least, I hope it was," he laughed. I smiled and hugged him again.

"Wish I could have. I was a little preoccupied."

"Yeah I saw that," he mumbled.

"I thought I could handle it myself."

"You did. He just didn't listen." He rocked back and forth a little bit. "You're frozen solid."

"Thanks."

"I'd give you a jacket had I been wearing one. Was in a bit of a hurry."

"Hope Mal's okay."

"Hope Max has insurance." Max? A black car shining the headlights came down the street and pulled over in front of us. The window rolled down and even in the dark I could see his face.

"Alright, get in," Brian said. Angus let go of me and stepped toward the window.

"The hell did you get here?"

"Thought I'd drop by an' help. You didn't think you'd leave me out on all the fun."

"Little bugger," Angus laughed.

"Here get your girl and your arse in the car, it's freezing out there."

"Wait, Mal's not out yet," Angus said.

"Get in the car, I got him." Angus opened the back door and helped me in. He got in after me while Brian stepped out to wait for Malcolm. I shivered from the sudden warmth of the running car.

"You okay?"

"Yeah."

"You sure?"

"Yeah." He reached a hand to the back of my neck and tickled it.

"Still okay?" he smiled.

"Yes," I laughed.

"You sure?"

"Yes!"

"Well I'm not," he said continuing to tickle me. I tired scooting away but he scooted after me. "Now you're trapped." I pushed him away a few times but that's hard to do if you're in my circumstance. He finally stopped and stared at me. His smile was gone, but I couldn't tell what emotion his eyes held.

The back door opened and Malcolm threw himself in the car. Brian followed right after in the front seat. "Hello," Malcolm simply told us.

"What'd you do mate?" Brian asked.

"Nothin' too bad, but we'd better drive just in case," he smiled looking out the tinted window. He flexed his hand a few times, and when I looked over I could see his knuckles were bruised.
