Chapter One Hundred Three
October 24th 1997
He absentmindedly swung his legs off the side of the bed. The stationary crackled in his hands, having donned wrinkles from his pocket overnight. The words blurred together as he read it, pausing to wipe his eyes once in a while.
If you're reading this Angus, it means I'm leaving. I'm gone. The feeling came back shortly after Justice died, but I was too depressed to say anything. Thought maybe it would go away, then it got worse after the fire. I'm sorry, I should have told you.
I won't be here much longer so I'm writing you this. I'll miss you.
This has been the best experience going back in time, even though there hasn't been very many. I'm sorry I couldn't come back in the seventies, I would have loved to see how that turned out.
All in all, you're my best friend and I wouldn't trade you for the world. I love you.
Now hand this note around, I've got some things to say.
Malcolm, you are easily my big brother. Even in '75 you protected me. And I thank you for that.
Linda, thank you for talking with me through the tough times. You and Ellen are like my sisters. Thank you Ellen for putting up with my crap and not giving up on me.
Phil, thank you for our late night chats and for making me laugh. I'll always laugh, no matter how dirty your jokes are.
Thank you Brian for keeping everybody in line (especially Phil), and even helping me deal with Angus in '80. This band needs you more than you would believe.
Cliff, you and Georganne have become instant friends in the short time I've known you. I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused you, and I want to say hi to baby Erin.
I also want to say thank you to Bon, who-
"Angus! Whatcha readin'?" Malcolm asked. He and Phil were standing over him in an instant, peeking at the stationary. Angus shot his head up, fighting back the dizziness and the urge to punch his brother. "Brought Phil with me."
"Jesus Mal, don't do that!" Phil laughed and Malcolm rolled his eyes. "Or one of us will end up in this bed."
"Shouldn't there be someone already in there?" Phil asked. "Short brown hair, hospital gown?" Angus placed his hand on the spot where his friend had been. He tried to stay awake, but sleep overcame him and she soon vanished.
"Yeah Angus, where is she?" Malcolm asked. It wasn't until Angus didn't answer for a while that he got worried. "Angus...?"
"She's gone," he muttered. Phil and Malcolm exchanged glances. "She left last night."
"Gone?" Phil asked. "Gone outside? To the lobby?" Angus shook his head.
"Home," was all he said.
"Wait wait," Malcolm said. "You saw her leave?"
"No, we fell asleep and she left, ya' know."
"So...you slept in that bed?" Phil grinned. "Both of you at the same time together?" Malcolm punched his shoulder while Angus blushed.
"That ain't the bloody fuckin' point, Rudd!" Malcolm scolded. "Who cares what happened or didn't happen, point is..." He dropped his hands to his sides. The room was dead silent aside from the clock. Malcolm sat on the bed next to his brother and draped an arm over him. Angus lay his head on his shoulder and hid the note in his hands. Phil put his hands in his pockets.
"That's-that's it then," he mumbled. "Gone just like that. Sorry Ang, I know you liked her the most." Angus shook his head.
"It was a good year. Best we've had in a while," he said. "Only wish it could have been two."
"What's that, Ang?" Angus looked up at his brother to see him staring at the note.
"Oh just-" He shrugged. "Just somethin' Hannah wrote before she left. A little goodbye."
"That sucks, bein' able to tell when you're goin'," Phil said. "ya' know what's comin'." Malcolm shrugged.
"Beats not knowin'," he argued. "if it means no goodbye at all."
"Who's gonna tell everyone?" Phil asked.
"I'll do it." Both men turned their attention to Angus, who stared at the stationary. "I know the full story, makes better sense if I do it."
"I can if ya' want Ang," Malcolm suggested. "I mean it's not really a-"
"You've already done the sharin' Mal," Angus interrupted. "of a not so good news. I think it's my turn now." The brothers shared an empathic smile.
"Okay. You uh, want some time alone or somethin'?"
"Wouldn't hurt I s'pose. You two goin' home?"
"Jesus Ang, just got here," Phil joked placing a hand over his heart. "Kickin' me away like a beer can already." Malcolm stood up and followed Phil out the door.
"We'll be downstairs, Ang," he laughed. "You can come when you're ready or whenever."
"Thanks Mal." The door shut again and Angus looked down at the now very crumpled note in his hand. His eyes skimmed the paper and stopped when he found his spot.
I also want to say thank you to Bon, who has been such an amazing friend to us all and who we will miss like hell. Whether or not he reads this, he knows it. And, Angus? I know by the time I'm back in my own time that it won't matter a whole lot, but I'll miss you and I love you.
P.S. I'll try not to get in trouble on my own.
Angus heard a crash outside his door. "Watch where you're walkin' mate," a voice laughed. Angus let out a smile of his own and shook his head.
