Chapter Ninety Three

I don't remember anything after Georganne left. My world went dark, when I woke up, I'm in a hospital room. A nurse was giving me medicine through a tube down my throat. I didn't feel it as much as I thought I would, only when I swallowed. The nurse noticed I woke up, so I guess I was able to be awake. "You're okay sweetie. The doctor's running a blood test, he should be back in the next hour." Her accent was English, not Irish. Where the hell was I? England. Duh. I'd ask to be sure, but that wasn't the most appealing idea at the moment.

I got knocked out again so the nurse could take the tube out of my throat. I woke up to it burning like eariler, but that was the worst I felt. That, and my fever. I stuck one leg out of my blanket to balance the temperature.

About an hour later a doctor came in. No sign of good news crossed his features. He held papers of charts and numbers that he soon placed on a counter. "So...Hannah is it? I hear you've been awfully sick for a long time." I didn't respond. I was too tired. "That's not good."

The doctor sat on a swivel stool and rolled over to my bed. He grabbed my wrist to check my pulse and I noticed the inside of my elbow had been bandaged. "Do you know what might have caused this?" I could only shake my head. "Then we'll have to find out. I'll come back in a little while and maybe a visitor?" He smiled and left the room. At the time I couldn't even remember who my visitors were. I thought my mom had taken me here. Rolling over on my side, I eventually fell asleep.

Angus rubbed my back while we sat in the doctor's office. He had shown up with the doctor and carried me there as I still couldn't stand on my own. I didn't recognize him at first, but I quickly snapped out of it. The doctor sat across from us writing notes on a clipboard. My head was throbbing.

"Okay..." the doctor sighed flipping to the next page. "Alright, I know you're probably still feeling a little, blech, but I'm gonna need you to answer my questions." I nodded. "Just do the best you can okay?" Angus patted my back. "When did you start feeling this way?"

"Earlier this afternoon," I answered.

"Yesterday afternoon," Angus corrected. "We, we just now got her to a hospital."

"Okay, what were her symptoms?"

"Uh, she had a high fever, shaky ya' know, uh, threw up a lot. Later she got worse but that's how it was at the time." The doctor circled some things.

"When did she start getting worse, what were her symptoms then?"

"Uh, I think this was-I think it was three hours later, she had passed out and woke up three hours later to throw up. And uh-" Angus cleared his throat. "She wasn't answerin' us an' she passed out again. Bad-bad breathin' ya' know." I closed my eyes. If Angus was just gonna answer all the questions, I could relax a little. "Still had a fever." The doctor nodded.

"Okay, yeah." He looked over his paper. "Yeah. So Hannah." I opened my eyes to see the doctor smiling at me. He had set his papers aside and folded his hands together. "Did you have any sort of memory loss, hazy thinking?" I nodded. "Any hallucinations?" I thought of Georganne when we were in the bathroom. I nodded again. "Alright. So we took your blood test. Ran it through and it appears you have some form of poison ingestion."

"Poison?" Angus asked. "Like, death poison?"

"Not always," the doctor answered. "Some poisons have a low toxicity or are taken in small amounts. Luckily for Hannah it was both."

"So she's gonna be okay?"

"She should be as soon as we get her treatment." I closed my eyes again and leaned against Angus' shoulder. I felt him hug me a bit tighter.

"How did she-how did this happen?" Angus asked.

"She ingested it. Whether by food or water... Did she eat or drink anything the morning before she got sick? Symptoms usually begin in thirty minutes."

"No uh, we had fallen asleep outside so uh, we didn't get anythin'."

"What about the day before? What did you eat?"

"Tacos," I mumbled.

"You all ate those?" Angus nodded. "If it were the tacos you would all have gotten sick. What about water? You guys came from Ireland, did you drink anything you weren't supposed to while you were there?" I thought back. I had taken a walk that afternoon the band was busy and saw a man selling water. He gave me a water bottle free of charge and I drank some. Now that I thought about it, my water bottle looked different than anybody else's. Mine had a blue label while the others were red. Almost as if it had been saved for me. I told this to the doctor and he nodded. "Sounds to me like a deliberate action of sin."

"You mean, someone tried to poison her?" Angus asked. "To, to, to kill her?"

"Possibly. Maybe not but it's always good to be careful. If he was selling the others and gave hers away..." The doctor shrugged, "So the posion found in your system was organic arsenic. It was a small amount and not as bad as inorganic, so that's good."

"What does that do?" Angus asked.

"If inhaled it causes more respiratory issues, if ingested like her case it causes vomiting, dizziness, delerium. It could also get into your bloodstream. That water she says she drank must have gotten some put in. Such a small dosage isn't lethal and might take longer to set in. But it could certainly make her sick."

"So, how do you get rid of it?"

"There's options. Blood transfusion, stomach irrigation. For her I recommend taking mineral supplements. You can also clean any skin on her that's been infected."

"Okay so, she has to take pills and a bath and that's it?"

"Yes," the doctor confirmed. "For a case like hers it isn't that serious so mineral supplements is good. It's a good way to go."

I can't believe someone had tried to poison me. Someone had deliberatly tried to kill me. Whoever that man was, knew who I was and wanted me gone. And this wasn't paranoia. Now I was scared it would happen again but worse.

"As far as the man who gave you the water, the best you can do for him is tell the police, do you remember what he looked like?" I shook my head. "Well tell the police and they can look into it. Stop him from succeeding in killing someone else. Or going after you again." I paled.

"Okay. We'll do that," Angus answered looking at me. I closed my eyes again.

"I'll give you what you need, then you can be on your way."

I leaned on Angus the whole walk back to my hospital room. He practically had to drag me along. But I didn't care. I was gonna be okay.

The rest of the group had been allowed entrance while I was gone so they could see me when I got back. Some were in chairs but most of them were standing watching the news on the little televsion. They saw us enter and all stood up to see us.

"What happened?" Phil asked. Angus glanced up at everyone.

"There's good news and there's bad news."

"What's the good news?" Brian asked.

"The good news is that Hannah is gonna be okay. She got her medicine, she should be good to go." I can't tell you how much tension had vanished in those seconds. I got hugs from everyone and I wish I had been more up to returning them. "The bad news is someone tried to poison Hannah."

"What?" asked Cliff.

"They found posion in her person an' that's what made her sick." Angus retold them what I had choked out to the doctor. Their smiles disappeared quickly.

"Oh my God," Malcolm said. He came up to give me another hug. I rested my head on his shoulder and just put all my weight on him. "What are we gonna do?"

"We tell the police, they take care of it. In the meantime, we got to keep Hannah and ourselves safe," Angus answered. "Won't have anythin' worse goin' on."

"Speakin' of police and news, ya' hear what happened?" Brian asked. "The prison break number ain't in London anymore."

"That's good then."

"Yeah, what isn't so good is that he hitched a ride all the way to Australia. Which is where you three go next."

"That's just what we need, criminals on the loose," Angus mumbled.

"Well it is Australia," Malcolm said before kissing my head and letting me go. Angus smiled.

"True." After we got ready we left the hospital. I was permitted to go under the watchful eyes of my guardians. We had gotten back to our new hotel and Angus insisted I sleep in the bed. He wanted me to be as comfortable as possible and the couch wasn't enough. I said I would, but only if he were next to me. Angus hesitantly obliged.

Later I learned from him all that happened while I was passed out. Due to their crappy circumstances at the cottage, they looked after me until five when a car could come. It took us to the airport for their private plane where they spent one miserable trip to London. "Brian would tell me to put you on the seat an' check on you from a seat or two over. I say to him, if I can have a spasm on the ground an' leap from high things all while playin' my guitar, I think I can hold her for a plane ride."

We reached London where I was admitted to the Heart Hospital. It was the next day by the time we got there and I finally woke up during my medicine intake. I took a pill with a few crackers come mealtime and we went to bed. I snuggled into Angus and he watched me closely. I could tell he was not happy about me going off alone and accepting free water but he was more pissed off at the man who gave it to me. Now he'd probably never let me out of anyone's sight. "I'm not mad at you Hannah. Never. Jus' gonna watch out for ya' more. This ain't one of those silly adventures this is the real seal barkin'. Gotta watch out for everyone."

While I nuzzled myself between his neck and shoulder, I suddenly felt scared. Who on earth would try to kill me? Was it the same person who I felt was following me last month? It must have been, no one in particular came to mind. Was it because I was friends with the band? Had somebody gotten so envious that they would do away with me? But I'm a fan of the band too and I know their fans wouldn't go this far and obscure. What if they were trying to get rid of the band and got to me first? Angus kissed me on my cheek and I felt safe again. As long as I was right here, I felt okay. "'m glad you're better sweetheart. Killed me to see ya' like that ya' know. Thank God it wasn't me who got you sick by sleepin' outside. That would have been hard to live with for sure."

"Next time I'm not taking anything from anyone," I mumbled.

"Promise?" I linked my pinky with his and he kissed it. My sleepiness caught up with me and finally overcame my stubborn struggle. I fell asleep in a matter of minutes but not before Angus spoke again. "That's my girl."
