Chapter Forty Seven

His hand brushed my cheek while the other held my shoulder. I wondered what went through his head to do this, but that thought didn't last long.

He sighed and tilted his head to deepen it. But he stopped when we heard cheering across from us. His forehead rested against mine and his panting labored between us. "Way to go Ang!" Malcolm shouted.

"Got her by the lips!" Phil said. Angus looked over at them.

"What the hell do you want?"

"Just checkin' up on ya' Ang," Malcolm smiled. "How ya' doin' over there Hannah? He treatin' you good?"

"Yeah, we're fine. And you four?"

"Wonderful lass. Probably not as good as Angus here though," Brian said.

"Hey piss off!" I glanced around to see if Ellen was anywhere. It was gonna be real hard to explain to her what happened. Stuff that never should have happened.

"Alright we're goin'. But you'd better come down here too. Missin' the party."

"They're havin' their own party Cliff," Phil laughed. They all left laughing and the sound echoed off and down the stairs.

"Fuckin' hell." Angus leaned against the walled edge with his eyes closed.

"Should probably go back down-"

"No!" he said grabbing me pulling me back down. "No, just stay here." He wrapped an arm around me. "It's okay." He kissed my head and patted my shoulder. "It's okay."

I don't know how long we stayed up there, but it felt timeless. We'd talk, laugh, and just enjoyed being with each other. Eventually we ended up down stairs. Well, at least down one flight before Angus pinned me against the wall. His lips clumsily found mine for a couple seconds and he smiled at me. "Surprise."

"Cheeky." I stepped around him and we continued down slowly. "Hey, I uh, have something to tell you."

"What?" He turned to me. I looked around then whispered.

"I have a crush on you." I stepped back and he smiled again.

"You don't say. I've had one on you for a long time," he laughed. "A big one." Someone screamed. Followed by several more screams in the main foyer. "The hell was that?" We ran down the stairs to see people running in all directions. A box was tipped over and huge spiders crawled out of it.

"Only in Australia," I said in shock.

"Only in Australia," Angus whispered. I ran ahead of him to the front of the building. Justice was laughing her head off.

"Holy shit, where were you?"

"On the roof."

"Oh you missed a good time. Some boy ran in there holding-" she laughed. "-holding a box and-he tripped and went flying!" I started laughing with her. Must have been that boy I saw who was clearly told to keep it outside. Angus showed up beside me and Justice stopped laughing. "Oh. Hello, you're-"

"Yeah, I get that a lot," he smiled.

"You're-and you-" she pointed at me. "-and him..." I looked at Angus. He wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "I knew it from the start," she said smiling something smug.

"Knew what?" Angus asked.

"Nothing, come on." I walked toward the crowd hoping to find everyone else I knew. Angus walked slower behind me and Justice ran right to my side.

"Where we going?"

"Looking for the rest. Might as well properly meet everyone right?"

"Are you serious?" I smiled.

"Course I am. Don't want you to get gypped this time."

"Oh thank you! You know, for an older guy..."

"What?"

"You didn't tell me he was so cute up close!"

"Whoops," I smiled. Finally I saw Malcolm talking to Cliff a way off. "Hey, there's your man."

"Nice to see you here Hannah," Malcolm said.

"Yeah sure is. Have fun on the roof?"

"Real blast."

"I'll bet. Oh this is Justice, remember my new friend?"

"Oh yeah, called me on the phone to tell Hannah was hurt."

"Wasn't hurt."

"A little."

"Was not!"

"Hush up." He put a hand over my mouth. "The grown ups are talking."

"You gonna give her the 'Malcolm charm' Mal?" Cliff asked.

"Maybe. Depends. Should I Hannah?" I struggled against his hand. Justice giggled.

"You guys are like siblings, it's cute."

"Yeah, like a little sister. You wanna be my sister Hannah?" I took his hand off my face.

"I already am."

"What about me?" Cliff asked.

"I'm your cool sister you take everywhere and who annoys all your friends." He laughed.

"Yeah, that's spot on."

"What about me?" Angus asked behind me. I whirled around to see him grinning.

"Uh-you're my-my..." Crap. "My best friend. Obviously." He still smiled, but had this look in his eye that spoke volumes. 'Oh really?'

"Hm, I see." I smiled nervously and turned back to see the three who were talking about the boy and his box. A hand grabbed mine and pulled me away from everyone towards a more rural area. The hand let go and I backed away. "I'm your best friend huh?"

"Y-yeah. Of course."

"Hmm. Interesting. Anything else?"

"What else could I say Angus?"

"True." We started walking off in some direction I'm sure he didn't know. "You have fun tonight?"

"Yeah, it was great."

"Glad you got to see this one compared to last time."

"Last time?"

"You got sick and came when everyone was too drunk to treat women properly."

"Oh yeah! Thanks for helping me by the way."

"No problem. Hmm, wonder where this path goes to." My eyes followed his to a beaten, worn down, weary road leading to a network of trees. Not a forest but-an Australian forest of sorts.

"Are you sure? Not many people on this path."

"Perfect then." He took my hand again and down the path we walked. He sure spent a lot of time with me this night. I wasn't worried or scared in any way what he would do to me, but curious as to why he wanted to be alone so much. After all, this isolated path was just 'perfect' for him.

"Where are you going Angus?"

"Where am I going?"

"Yes you."

"Not sure to be honest. Do you know?"

"Not a clue."

"Hmm."

"Why do you want to be alone with me all of the sudden?" I cut to the chase.

"I know this is your last time visitin', I wanted to spend as much time with you as possible. Before you know, you left."

"What if I left tomorrow?"

"Then I'd be very sad."

"What if I left right now?" He frowned at me.

"I don't like where this is going."

"I'm speaking hypothetically. What if I left right now?"

"I don't know."

"It's pretty dark out here."

"I know, I can see that." We paused a minute before we started giggling. Angus' hand grew warm against mine and I could tell he was blushing.

"In all seriousness, it is getting really dark."

"You wanna head back?"

"If we can find our way," I said.

"It's easy. You just go the way you came."

"Ha ha." I rolled my eyes.

"Well you do." After three minutes of searching we saw street lamps that led us to our building. Albeit much less people. "Everyone's gone home."

"Almost everyone." Phil stood by a car glaring at us.

"'Bout fuckin' time you two lovebirds showed up. I'm hungry, and tired, and your brother told me to come get you. If I could find you." We got into his car and he started driving back to the houses.

"You sure didn't try very hard," Angus mumbled.

"Speaking of matters, your wife ain't too happy with you Ang."

"What's wrong?"

"Just upset with you. Or all of us, can't tell. Won't talk to anyone, tells Linda some things, off her boat a little."

"How long she been feelin' like this?"

"Almost all night."

"Shit." Angus looked out the window. This is where everything started going downhill.
