Chapter Fifty Eight
"You're back. Have a safe trip?"I looked the house over and smiled to myself. Not a bit changed.
"Yeah I think so. The houses aren't that far apart," Angus answered.
"I won't stay long, Linda'll be back soon."
"Where's she off to?"
"Hair, nails, groceries. You know," Malcolm said.
"Well thank you for helping with this Mal, we've-we've got a lot to talk about," Ellen smiled sadly at me.
"I'll get out of your way then." Malcolm opened the front door. "See you later Angus. Bye love." And with that he was gone.
"Here we are again," Angus said. "One big happy family."
"Suppose we'd better talk then huh? Get all the sad stuff out of the way?" Ellen asked.
"I'd like that," I answered.
"So, I'm sorry for acting the way I did, and-"
"You had more than every right to," I cut her off. "I'm sorry for everything I did, from the eighties, and now-and I'm really sorry I never should have done that. I know an apology can't fix this but-"
"No, no, an apology can't fix this. So it's a good thing it's already been fixed. I'm completely aware of the feelings you two so obviously have, but you also have to be aware that we're married. There's, kind of rules about that."
"I know, Hannah knows that-she, she tried telling me," Angus said. "Which is why Ellen, I've decided to forget my feelings." I looked at him. The look he returned told me he was testing her.
"Angus don't be stupid, we all know you can't do that. I wouldn't want you to anyway you'd be miserable."
"And I don't want to get in the way, then you'd be miserable," I told Ellen.
"And I don't want you mixed up in something you shouldn't be. I don't want you miserable," Angus told me.
"So none of us want the other to be miserable," Ellen laughed.
"Which brings me to what I was gonna tell you, Hannah. But both of you should hear it." Angus rested his hand on mine. "I've been thinking a lot. A lot. And I've decided that I want what's best for you. So I'm letting you go. Not losing my feelings," he glanced at Ellen. "but letting you go back to your time. Without all this trouble and crap."
"When did you think of all this?" Ellen asked.
"Just-in my thinking time. Now, I want you to know I don't want to let you go. But I do want your best interests. And this seems like the best way." I smiled to reassure him but couldn't stop my voice from shaking.
"That's fair. It's not anyone's favorite choice but it's the best one. Ellen? Can we please be friends again?"
"Of course we can," she smiled. I got up from my spot on the couch to hug her. I knew we couldn't completely forget all that happened, but right now I was so overjoyed to have my friend back. Because I also couldn't forget all the good times we had. It was then I forgot to tell Angus about Christmas Eve.
Ellen went to bed early that night due to her headache so Angus and I half-snuggled on the couch. I mean half because-okay, we were full time snuggling. But no monkey business going on. We stayed up watching tv but neither of us really paid attention. "So you feel better after today?"
"Definitely," I answered. "I'm happy to be back."
"I'm happy to have you back." He tightened his hold on me. "Missed you too much."
"Missed you more."
"Missed you most, don't argue sweetheart." My eyes fluttered shut as I buried my face against his shoulder. "So the tour is coming up, huh?" I nodded. "You're still coming right?"
"Wouldn't miss it for the world."
"Good."
"Is Ellen coming? Or Linda?"
"No...no. They've got business in Holland. I believe Georganne is coming, you remember her, Cliff's wife?"
"Oh yeah, that's good."
"You're awfully quiet, is something wrong?"
"No."
"Hannah, look at me." I gazed up at him. He smiled and ruffled my hair. "You've got the biggest eyes."
"All the better to see you with my dear," I sighed.
"You sure nothing's wrong?"
"Sure I'm sure."
"Somethin' happen at Mal's place?"
"Yeah but, it's not that important, I can tell you later."
"Are you sure?" I nodded. "What if you leave before you get the chance?"
Hannah snuggled into Angus instead of answering. He rubbed her back and stood to carry her to her room. Maybe it wasn't important. But it must have been if it made her so downhearted. If it had happened at Malcolm's, he'd tell him.
Angus picked up the phone and dialed up his brother. Hopefully he wasn't too busy...
"Yeah?"
"Mal, it's Angus. I'm calling to ask you about something."
"Don't you ever call just to say hello?" Angus sighed.
"Hello. Now I have a question about Hannah. She's been at your house a while, and she said something happened over there?"
"Maybe, what did she say?"
"She said she'd tell me later."
"Then she'll tell you later," Malcolm reasoned.
"I'm not a patient man Mal."
"That's for sure."
"So, do you know what happened or...?"
"Uh, I might."
"Tell me."
"Well, one night she was here, Christmas Eve actually, she came into my room crying."
"Why?"
"Angus it's late, she'll tell you-"
"What. Happened?" Malcolm sighed.
"Remember that feeling she got in 1980? Before she left?"
"Mal-don't tell me..."
"I tried not to. But-yeah. She got it again so I stayed up all night to watch her."
"Has she gotten it since?"
"I don't know. Not that she's said anyway."
"My God..." Angus sat on the counter and put his hand to his head. "My God, my God..."
"Has she had any tonight?"
"I don't know, she was just really quiet."
"Where is she?"
"I put her to bed. Why? Do you think she's gonna-"
"I don't know Ang, you'd better check." Angus set the phone down and hurried upstairs to Hannah's room. He pushed the door open and saw an empty bed.
Hannah was gone.
