Chapter Eighty Eight
Angus went to bed earlier than usual that night. He went straight to the shower (I hope) and didn't come back downstairs. I talked with Georganne in the kitchen. She was going in for an ultrasound in October to see if the doctor could tell the gender. If he couldn't, it would most likely be a girl. Keeping our fingers crossed.
Georganne said she wanted to go to the concert but Cliff wasn't so sure. "I'm gonna have this baby in twelve months if he keeps this up," she joked.
I went upstairs to bed and saw Angus sitting in chair with a leg crossed over the other. He was lost in thought but snapped out of it when I knocked on the open door. "It's your room too ya' know. You don't have to knock."
"Didn't want to disturb you."
"You already do sometimes," he grinned. I shook my head. I went to the bed and started moving the duvet and sheets. Angus was staring at me.
"What?" He opened his arms.
"Come here a minute." The sheets settled back on the mattress. I stood by him and he picked me up bridal style and sat me on his lap. "There you go, that's better."
"Are we gonna share this chair instead?"
"We will if you want to."
"No thanks, a bed is much better."
"The bed it is then. You like our show, sweetheart?" he asked with a smug face.
"Sure. A little something extra thrown in there too."
"How about that solo huh? I heard his night was made by some girl backstage."
"I'll bet." I rested my head against his and closed my eyes. "I'm tired."
Angus didn't answer. He was lost in thought again. I kept quiet not wanting to bother him. I played with his hand which was gripping my arm. It was small but warm.
Voices echoed downstairs. Laughing, talking, and playful arguing over a game of ping pong in the basement. Angus sighed and rubbed my arm. His eyes were focused on something distant, and not tangible. He opened his mouth to speak but stopped himself. I'd ask him what was wrong, but he'd simply deny anything. And I knew better. I thought I did.
"Sweetheart?" I didn't answer. His hand nudged my arm. "Han Banan?"
"Hm? You were talking to me?"
"Who else would I call sweetheart? There's not even anyone else in here."
"Alright then, what is it?" He opened his mouth and closed it again. And again. "Is something wrong?"
"No, no..." What did I say? "No I just... I want you to know somethin'. I want you to know that... I just want to make sure that you-you know, live your life." I glanced at him.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean-I guess I don't want you to not do what you enjoy if and when you go back home. You know."
"I'm afraid I don't." He let out a nervous laugh. He shifted in his spot and wrapped his arms around me again.
"I mean, if you meet a guy, and you really like him, I wouldn't you know, want you to-you know, not be with him because of me. I'll always love you, but if you ever find someone who makes you happy, in your time, you don't have to shoot him down because of me."
"Like if I still had feelings?"
"Yeah. Don't let those stop you from marryin' a better man."
"Well that's kind of hard when I'm sitting in the best's lap." He smiled.
"You're makin' this harder on me, kid. Were you thinkin' of gettin' married? Before you-time traveled?" I shrugged. Now that I think about it, I wasn't. Aside from being sixteen at the time, I wasn't ready. Marriage wasn't for me. That kind of life never appealed to me.
Then I met Angus.
He didn't necessarily change my mind, but I did have stronger feelings than I ever did before. And it hurt me horrendouly to know nothing could ever happen. But Angus was right. When I get back home, I need to move on. Something that could never happen shouldn't hold me back from a normal life. But I wasn't back home yet.
I snuggled into him. "Not especially. But I'll think more about that when I'm gone. Right now, I'm staying right here."
"You know," Angus started. "every once in a while I, I think about-"
"Hello? Anybody up here?" Georganne came into our room. She saw us and put her hands over her mouth. "Oh my goodness, that's too cute. Where's my camera, I'm getting a picture." She turned on her heel and walked away swiftly. My face grew hot.
"No Georgie, that's okay. You don't need to!"
"No, I want a picture of this!" Her feet practically stampeded down the stairs.
"Uh oh," Angus laughed. "We're in for it."
"What were you saying before she came in?" I asked him. His smile shrank.
"Just that...I've been thinkin'."
"About?" I pressed. He shrugged. "Oh come on, you know!"
"What would you do if I didn't tell you?"
"You were about to tell me anyway, so why won't you now?"
"What would you do if I didn't tell you?" he asked again more firm. His face was noticeably closer to mine. I maintained a stern face so I wouldn't blush. "Hm? What would you do?"
"I uh, I would be very upset," I answered.
"What would you do?" He leaned in even closer. His lips had parted slightly and his breath was warm against mine. I don't know what I would do, I didn't even know what I would do right now.
"I would-I would be extremely upset."
"You're not answering my question." I gave a little frown.
"Well you're not answering mine!" Angus tilted his head. His eyes left mine and gazed a few inches lower.
"Say cheese you two!" Georganne's voice sounded right outside the door. We turned in her direction allowing more distance between us. In she scurried with her big camera pointed right at us. "This is going on everybody's Christmas card."
Angus wrapped his right arm around my shoulders palming my head with his hand. His left arm held me in place in the front. I leaned my head on his shoulder and smiled.
I would never know if Georganne was telling the truth.
Angus leaned back in his chair. He pet the girl that lay in his arms' hair as she slept. Georganne had taken the picture and rushed downstairs to show the group. He could only imagine their reactions. Phil would make some perverted joke, Malcolm would smirk like the little bugger he was, Brian would laugh with approval and Cliff-well he would just smile. Congrat his wife on her mission of public showcasing and sit with her in content.
Hannah had fallen asleep minutes after. She closed her eyes as he sat in silent thought and eventuallly dozed off in his lap. She had the longest eyelashes he'd seen in a long time. Every time they fluttered, so would his heart.
The smell of tobacco smoke got his attention. Bon was leaning against the window with a cigarette between his teeth. It wobbled when he smiled. "Is this a bad time?"
Angus barely lifted Hannah. "What do you say?" Bon sauntered over and ran a hand through Hannah's hair.
"I say a job well done. But shouldn't you two be in bed by now? It's past your curfew, young man." Angus snorted.
"I'll get up soon, no hurry."
"'Cause if you don't, your ass is stayin' right there an' you ain't gettin' no sleep in that thing." Angus smiled and closed his eyes. "An' I know how you need your sleep."
"Speakin' of sleep I uh, had another dream."
"Did you?" Angus nodded. "Alright, let's hear it."
"Right now? Mate, can't this wait until mornin', I've got to get Hannah to bed."
"You were certainly not in any hurry, and neither am I to leave. Now..." Angus stood up.
"It's late, you should leave."
"I just got here."
"Yeah. I know." Bon spread his arms.
"Mate, what's up your knackers? You'd give your soul away to bring mine back, and you want me out?"
"Shh, you'll wake her up," Angus whispered. Hannah opened her eyes.
"She can't hear me, smartass. You're the one takin' names and lives 'cause he's had a bad dream. What's the point of tellin' me if you won't explain anythin'?"
"That's enough."
"No it's not. It's not ever enough, it's nothin' at all. You seem to do that a lot nowadays, let someone in on somethin', then send him out the door." Angus frowned. "Some mate that is."
"I lost her!" Angus shouted. Bon glared at him. "I, I lost her and she was afraid, and I couldn't do anything! I couldn't see her! It was dark and...ya' happy now?"
"Who are you talking to?"
