08. Rolling In The Deep.

Cam put her hands on the steering wheel and squeezed it, her heart racing picking up.

“Loosen up,”, Nat said, reaching over and put his hand on her shoulder and she hadn’t realized, so she turned to him and gave a nervous chuckle. “Just press down on the gas pedal until the car starts moving—not like that!”, Nat that when Cam did as he said, but she quickly press down and when the car jerk forward hard, she quickly pressed down on the brakes, making a girly squealing sound.

Her head snapped to him, “Sorry.’.

“It’s okay. Okay, this time, slowly.”, he said. She nodded, taking a deep breath before pressing her foot against the gasp pedal down slowly and the car move forward softly. “Good, see not to bad.”.

Cam held onto the wheel tightly since it seem hard to control, “I didn’t think the wheel would be so hard to steady.”, she said.

“After awhile, it’ll get easy. Now slowly make a turn right abouuuut now.”, he said and she made a right turn.

She began to feel some pride in herself and she got excited now, sitting up much straighter now. “I’m doing it.”, she said, smiling.

“See, it’s not as a big as a proble—watch out!”, he suddenly yelled and without thinking, Cam slammed her foot down on the brakes and her heart beat picked up again. She looked around to see what was coming or what she was doing wrong, but nothing was there so she looked at Nat confused. A grin was on his face as he stared at the dashboard.

She hit him hard on the arm, “That wasn’t cool, Nat! You really made me think I was going to hit something!”, she said and hit him a few more times. “Now what if I turn the car or something, I could have gotten us hurt you big dumbie.’.

He chuckled as he blocked her hits from his face, “Oh calm down, I was just testing you to see what you would do if there was actually something coming. Arianna has good braking skills, huh.”.

She glared at him, “Your not funny.”.

He chuckled more, “C’mon, c’mon, I wont do it again, I promise.”.

She gave him a serious look taking a deep breath again and put her hands on the wheel, pressing down on the pedal. She spent the next fifteen minutes slowly driving around the mall parking lot until it starting to rain again, so her and Nat switch seats.

“Hmm, I’m feeling like I want to get me permit soon.”, she said as she got in the passenger seat.

Nat chuckled as he began to drive out of the parking lot.

After he dropped her home, she told him goodbye before running out into the rain and up her porch. She saw her mom car was here, so she just quickly turned the knob and went in, her mouth open, ready to announce she was home until she heard her mom yelling.

“No, you just had to go off and screw some girl who could be young enough to be your daughter!”, she yelled from the kitchen and all the excitement Cam felt drained out of her.

“It was a mistake, I shouldn’t have done it!’, he yelled back. “What I did was unforgivable, I know that Lissa. You were just working all the time and I felt lonely.”.

“Stop saying that!”, she yelled. “Stop trying to put this all on me!”.

“I’m not trying to do that!", he said. “I love you, I don’t want our family to break up. You know after what my father did I would never want to do that, I just—I don’t know what else to say but sorry. Tell me what I have to do for you to forgive me.”, he said, his voice getting soft and almost begging.

“No, don’t touch me.”, her mom said. “I just—I just don’t kno—Cameron.”, her mom gasped as she walked out of the kitchen and she was shocked to see Cam standing there.

Cam licked her lips and opened her mouth to say something, but her dad came out of the kitchen, both of them having a pleading lot on their faces. She sighed then, “Why don’t you both just get a divorce, it’s really unfair to all of us.”, she couldn’t help but say before running over to the stairs as he eyes stung with tears and ran up them.

“Cam, wait!”, her mom yelled up to her.

“Cam, stop—“, her father started, but she was already up the stairs and ran over to her room just in time as the tears came out. She locked herself into her room and went over to bed, grabbing her pillows and hugged it tightly as she sat down on it, crying her eyes out.

No matter how much she wished her parents wouldn’t fight anymore, she felt like it’s not going to happen. Whenever their around, they fight, and every time their not fighting, her mom can’t look at him. If their just going to fight, what is the point?

            ***

Nat was strumming on his guitar when a knock came on the door, “Come in.”, he said. He turned his head to face the door when it opened and his little sister, Addie, came in. “What’s up, short stuff.”, he said, looking back at his guitar as he strummed.

“Uh, Nat,”, she said, walking over to the bed and she sounded nervous.

            “Hmm.”, he moaned.

“How was the beginning of eight grade for you?”, she asked, making his eyebrows furrowed together in confusion as he looked up at his little sister. She seemed timid, nervous, and scared.

“It was okay, I was more excited about forming a band.”, he said. “Why?”.

“Oh.”, she said, nodded. “So…so no one every pressured into…smoking?”, she asked, wincing a little as she grew more nervous looking.

His thumb strum hard against the guitar string as his eyes widen as he looked at his baby sister. He actually look a good look at her this time. He never noticed how—beautiful she gotten. She wasn’t the same eleven she was—she was a teenager who has grown up. She wasn’t his little tomboy sister anymore, he forgotten she would also grow up.

            “Did you?”, he asked.

She raised her right hand and held her thumb and index finger an inch apart, “Just a little—it was just one take!”, she quickly said when she noticed his protect brother look. “I hated it, Nat, I’m never going to do it again.”.

            “Addison Bynes.”, he sighed.

“Don’t sound like dad, I know you started smoking when you were fifteen, it broke mom heart.”, she said, pointing accusingly at him.

“And what do you think she’ll do when she find out her princess is?”, he asked.

“I’m not smoking, it was just a small intake, barley nothing.”, she said. “I just—I just had to tell someone, it was killing me and I thought you of all people could understand.”, she said, pouting down at him. “Please don’t tell mom and dad.”, she begged.

He looked down at his guitar and tapped his fingers against it. He realizes now he probably wasn’t the best role model for his little sister with all the stupid things he done and he doesn’t want Addie doing anything of the things he had done. He also knows sometimes parents don’t need to know everything and she’s much stronger to actually at least talk to someone about this. He looked back up at her, “Secret safe with me.”, he said and she smiled.

“Also,”, she said. “I don’t know what to do about my friends, they’re all…changing. How do I know which ones are my real ones and my fake ones?”, she asked.

He couldn’t keep himself from chuckling, “Addie, I don’t even know that. My whole career is full of fake people, I work with a lot of them. I think the only ones I have are the guys and they are annoying.”

            “And Cam?”, she asked.

He gave her a small smile, “And Cam.”.

            ***

Cam decided the next morning she wasn’t going to wait for Seth, so she waited down at the bus stop. It was awkward as always being around a bunch of student you never seem to talk to.

Soon she had seen Seth car and he pulled up next to her, rolling down the ride, “Need a ride?”, he asked, giving her his half side smile which like always, made him look handsome.

She pursed her lips and crossed her arms over her chest, “So he shows up today.”.

He chuckled, “Yesterday wasn’t my day, I’ll admit it. Come on, get in. I’m sure you very much have me take you instead of the bus.”, he said and she hates to admit he was right.

Hesitating, she walked over to the car and got in. She put her seat belt on as he drove away from the curb and stared out at the window, giving him the silent treatment.

“Okay, what do I have to do to make you forgive me?”, he asked.

Her nose scrunched up when he asked her that. It’s just like the same thing her father had asked her mother last night and it irked her. She doesn’t know what could make her forgive him. She was mad at him, but she isn’t sure if she wanted anything from him.

She hesitated, but looked at him, “Become friends with Nat.”.

His face tighten and his jaw clenched, “Huh?”.

“I know it’s hard to understand, but Nat is important to me to. I want the two most important guys in my life to be friends. It’s all I ask for Seth.”, she said.

“I’ll do anything but that.”, he said.

“I don’t want anything else.”, she said.

He chuckled, but it sounded humorless, “Of course you do.”, he said.

“What does that suppose to mean.”, she asked.

He hesitated for a moment, “All I hear about is Nat from you. Ex’s don’t become friends, they stay away from each other.”.

“I’m not other people, Seth. I’m that kind of person who likes having friends.”, she said. “And I don’t talk about Nat a lot.”.

“I’m tired of worrying about you with him.”, he said and she looked at him confused. He looked at her for a quick second before turning to the rode, “Don’t look so confused, Cam, I know you’re not naïve. I think your in denial.’.

            “Of what?”, she asked.

“Your feelings for him.”, he said.

“That isn’t true.”, she said, glaring at him. “And how could you say that, Seth?”.

“He’s not over you, I know that for sure.”, he said, pulling into the school parking lot. “He wants you back, Cam, and I wont let him take you from me. Your mine now.”.

            “Yours?”, she questioned.

He scuffed, “You know what I mean, Cam, you’re my girlfriend now.”.

She ran her fingers threw her hair, feeling a headache coming on. Since when does Seth become all—like a jerk? He use to be so open and trust her, but she feels like he doesn’t trust her anymore and she didn’t like that. She opened her door, “I better get to class now—”,

“Wait!”, he said, reaching over and grabbed her arm. “Your going to be stay away from Nat, right?”.

“Seth—“, she scuffed. “You can’t tell me who to be friends with.”.

“Please,”, he said, giving her a begging look. “For me.”, he said and she got this weird crawly feeling. He felt so…clingy. Nothing he has every done before and it was a huge turn off.

            “Seth, let go—“

“No.”, he said, his blue eyes harden and he held onto her arm hard.

“Yes, Seth!”, she said, then as hard as she could, snatched her arm back. She got out the car and closed the door, walking away.

The passenger door opened, “Wait, Cam, I’m sorry!”, he said and she ignored him.
