Dance the night away

I got my emerald green dress on and fixed my curly hair into a partial up do. Now just to work on my makeup. Once I had it perfected I put on some perfume and took a step back. Well I guess this is good as it was gonna get. I smiled. Hey I look pretty good! I headed down stairs. "Oh honey you look beautiful." My mom said tearing up. "Thank you." I said. "Let me get some photos!" She said grabbing her cell phone. After she took a few I started to pace nervously.

There was a knock on the door. My mom walked to answer it. "You look beautiful, don't be nervous." She said. "Thanks." I walked to the door and smoothed down my dressed. She opened it to reveal a cute guy with dark blonde hair. It was cropped short. "Hey I'm Cam." He said shaking my mom's hand. "It's so nice to meet you. I'm Gale." She said. "Hi I'm Marny." I said giving him a slight wave. "It's nice to meet you, are you ready to go?" He asked. "Sure, you look nice." I said. "Thanks, I like your shoes." He said. "Oh my shoes?" I looked down. "Yea they're cool." He said. "Oh, okay." I grinned. "Thanks, I spent a small fortune on them but I had to have them." I said following him outside. "Good call." He nodded. I was a little hurt that was all he said though.  I opened the door and climbed into the passenger side of his small truck.

"So cd release party, first cd that's pretty cool." I said. "yea I guess so." Not much of a talker. "You don't think?" I asked. "Oh no, yea it's fine." He said. It was quiet the rest of the way to the venue. We got out and walked hand in hand to the door. It was a little weird since I just met him. But he was cute and nice so I guess I shouldn't be so overcritical.

We walked in and he had to excuse him self to talk to people. I stood there awkwardly. I felt a hand on my arm and turned to look. "Wow, you look amazing." Said Dylan. "Why thank you, so do you." I said. But more than that he smelled good really good. His eyes scrolled my body. And no comment on my shoes. "I didn't know you'd be here." He said clearing his throat and meeting my eyes. "I have a date thing? My dad hooked me up with one of the guys in the band." I said.

His eyes lit up in amusement. "Oh yea which one?" He asked. "Um Cam." "You and Cam really? I didn't see that one." He said nodding. "You know him?" I asked. "Little bit." He said. "Well is he any good?" I asked. "He's alright but his other brother is better, cutter too." He said. I nodded catching on. "Would that other brother happen to be you?" I asked. "It would. And we also have Ethan but he's the smart one who knows things. And Cam? The shy one." "So I came to the dance with the wrong brother?" I asked. "Oh you totally did." He said. "Well he's busy would you want to dance?" I asked. "Sure, let's go." He said taking my hand. He led me to the dance floor. He held me close. No butterflies, go away. This isn't your date. I mean he was a super cool guy, but now i was getting butterfly's around him!

He leaned down. "I just want to say that you smell really good." He said in a husky voice. "Thank you." I said breathlessly. He led me around the dance floor his hand tight on my lower back so he could pull me close. I felt his heartbeat through his tux shirt. I could feel his muscles rippling as he spun me around in circle. "That dress is really doing things for you...I mean the color..." "My my if I didn't know any better I'd say you are a little flustered?" I asked Dylan, a smirk in my voice. "Obviously, I mean you saw yourself right? Drop dead gorgeous!" He said. Now this is what I wanted my date to say to me. I went out of my way to up it a notch. I wanted it to be noticed. And who didn't want a cute guy telling her she looked nice?

"Oh there he is." I heard another guys voice. "Hey Dylan." He turned. "Oh hey, Ethan this is Marny. Cam's date. Marny this is our other brother Ethan." I said. "Why are you dancing with his date?" Ethan whispered. "He left her and she looked lonely." He shrugged. "I don't buy that for a minute." He said. "Well you should." He hissed back. "You know I'm the smart one, I call bull." Ethan narrowed his eyes. Dylan ignored him and  turned to me. "I have business to get to but I'll see you in a bit." He said. "Thanks for the dance." I nodded. I sat at a table munching cookies while the guys networked. I didn't mind I knew it was just par for the course. Cam finally found me. "I'm sorry I'm a terrible date I had to meet and greet but I'm free now. You wanna dance?" He asked. "Sure." I took his hand and he led me out to the dance floor.

He swayed me around but he kept me at a distance. I didn't feel those same sparks i did for Dylan though but I suppose that could be that Dylan was just more confident. It would be awkward if I liked two out of the three brothers. When the song winded down we went back to the table for some punch. I took a sip enjoying the cool liquid as i had become quite parched.

"Ouch what happened to your arm Marny?" Asked Cam looking at the bandage that only covered half the scar on my elbow. "You can blame your brother for that one." I said pointing at Dylan. Dylan held both hands up. "Guilty as charged I tried to teach her the finer arts of riding a skate board." Dylan said. "Dylan do you have any idea how dangerous that is?" Cam asked scowling. "Chill out 'dad'. She wasn't seriously hurt." Said Dylan, a challenge in his eyes. "Well she could have been." Cam said. "It's fine. It was almost fun." I said. Cam just shook his head.

"Marny, why don't you lead your old man around the dance floor?" Asked Richard coming up to the table. "Oh um, sure that'd be great." I said standing up. "I know this probably won't make up for any of those father daughter dances...that's still a thing right?" He asked. "I'm not really sure." I said. "So be honest with me. How do you like working with me?" He asked. "Honestly it's amazing. I guess I felt kind of lost after high school but was hoping to find something i enjoyed. Maybe try college." I said. "Well we'll have to find you other work soon I suppose. I mean only so much upkeep the site needs." He said. "Great." "Any idea's?" He asked. "Weeeell....I've always thought it would be cool to find new artist's I have an ear." I said thinking there's no way he'd let me do that job. I'm new and i have no reason to even be good at it. "Sure finish up the site and we can talk. I've always had an ear too." He said.

"Really?" I asked. "Sure! I just feel terrible for not being there for you." He said. "Don't give it to me out of guilt, we've been over this. You didn't know. I'm just grateful for the chance." I said. "Well good." The song ended and we sat back down at the table. Finally they called the guys up to sing a few of there hits from the album. As i watched them sing i decided Dylan was right. Ethan was the smart one. The way he moved and held the mic was with precision and calculation.

Cam shied away from the mic, he didn't like being in the spotlight or the center of attention. Dylan however embraced it. His wide smiled showed his passion for music. He didn't mind being adventurous and trying new things and that was right up my alley. So maybe my dad hooked me up with the wrong Everly brother.
They sang with passion, and were really good. I mean I was blown away by how good. I listened to mostly country but I could dig this.

When they finished their set Cam came and sat back down next to me. "So I've had a good time tonight, why don't we go out on a date. A real date, is this a date? Well another date..." He said flustered. "Sure." I said because I felt bad he was so flustered. And who knows maybe I'm wrong about him. While Dylan gave me butterfly's that's not a good enough reason to date somebody. Besides I'd like to think if it builds slow it'll be super good when we finally fall in love. And if I've learned anything by dating in the past it's that I don't know what I'm doing!
And aren't dads supposed to have that sixth sense thing? Granted most dad's wanted a guy who is going to treat their daughter like a lady. I have no objections to being treated like a lady but I also wouldn't mind being shoved  up against a wall to be kissed. And cam it didn't seem like the type of guy to do that.
Dylan on the other hand.... I turned to look at him he caught me looking. He bit his lip and winked. He just looks like trouble. I licked my lips, bent my head shyly and looked away. Totally trouble. The problem was I liked trouble. And Cam looked like a safe bet. But we've established I don't know what I'm doing. So I'm going to trust my gut on this one and give cam a try.
The night winded down and Cam offered to take me home. I thanked him and we left. I was hoping he would be more talkative on the ride home but he wasn't. I asked him how he thought the night went. "Pretty good." That's it? "How about you pick something to talk about then?" I asked. His hands gripped the steering wheel.
"We don't have to talk, I'm sorry." I said. "No, it's fine. You seem totally into talking. Um do you have...a...pet?" He asked. "No I couldn't keep a goldfish alive so there were no further pets after that. You?" I asked.
"We had a dog named Penny Lane, a golden retriever. She died a few years ago and we really miss her. So much we couldn't get another dog." He said. " Oh no, I'm so sorry." I said. " it's OK, I guess that's just a part of life." He shrugged. See there we go, I could totally do this.
" I'm sorry I'm so quiet. This is kind of new for me." He said. "No you're totally fine." I said. " I'm not, but I am learning. When we go out on a date I promise to be a better conversationalist." He said smiling. "Awe, thanks!" I said as he pulled into my house. I wasn't one for kidding on a first date but I liked to do a kiss on the cheek. I leaned in and he blanched.
"Sorry I was just going to kiss your cheek. But it's fine, have a good night." I said getting out. "Okay, see you," he said as I shut his door. I couldn't decide if that was a disaster or if it actually went OK. The jury is still out on that one. I walked inside and my mom was sitting on the couch waiting up for me.
"Oh my goodness how was your night?" She asked. "Fine I had a really good time." I said. "Cam seems like a nice guy." She said. " He really is. "Almost too nice. "Why do you look unhappy about that? There's nothing wrong with being nice. Most girls would kill to go on a date with a nice guy." She said.
"No, you're totally right. There is nothing wrong with being a nice guy I'm just trying to figure out where it's going to go from here." I said. "It was one date why does it have to go anywhere?" She asked. "What do you mean?" I asked. "It's simple, if you don't like him then don't go out with him again. But your cheeks look a little flushed your eyes are glowing you must've had a good time. Did you dance with anybody else?" She asked.
"Oh just his brother Dylan. And I danced with Dad for one song." I said. " Dylan huh?" She she asked raising an eyebrow. "It was nothing." "Tell me how good he looked in his suit." She said. "So good... no, it was nothing. Cam and I are going on another date." I said.
"And this right here is why I am single. I don't understand." She said throwing her hands up. "Speaking of that, why are you single? Don't you think it's time for you to get back out there?  you know get back on the horse?" I asked. "Men are overrated. I do fine on my own." She said. "But don't you want to feel that chemistry, that connection?" "Don't you? You don't really seem all that interested in Cam, it just seems like you don't want to be single any longer. What's wrong with Dylan?" She asked.
"Nothing at all. But I don't even think he likes me. Sure he threw out a comment but he was probably just trying to be nice and besides Cam saw me first first." I said. "You know that's not how this works, right?" "isn't it? It would be rude to go on a date with Cam and then try to date his brother." I said. "I just want you to be happy." "I am." I promised. " I am going to go take this dress off and shower my feet are killing me." I said. " OK good night honey." "Night mom." I waved and headed to my room.

This further proves that I do not know what I am doing. Maybe I'll just be single forever like my mom. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Maybe that's what were doing here...are we? No we aren't my mom could date if she wanted to she doesn't and a tiny part of me always thought it was because she still held a candle for my dad. Maybe that's why they broke up? He wanted this super cool record company and she wanted a family. Maybe they didn't think those two things could miss. But now they are going to resent each other. Him for not telling her and her for him being successful even though she could have had a part in it.

I hung the dress back into the closet. Tonight was fun but I didn't need to wear heals like that again for a while. My feet were killing me.
