Chapter 17

Song for chapter- Rolling in the Deep by Adele

Eileen POV

I looped my arm through Nick's. "You look lovely." He kissed my temple. I smiled at him and we walked down the stairs. My parents looked up from the receiving line.

"Eileen!" My mother rushed to my side and pressed a kiss to both of my cheeks. My father smiled and excused himself from the conversation he was holding and walked to us.

"Love." He kissed both of my offered cheeks. "How is my girl?"

"I am good." I looked up at Nick. "I missed you both."

"I missed you too baby." My mother smiled at the two of us. "You won't believe what happened this time around. Your father ended up meeting with the prime minister and helping with a border dispute."

I looked around at the ball goers. "I see you rounded up all the most powerful people in the US for this?"

"Yes." My father smiled. "They are dear friends of ours." I rolled my eyes slightly. "Don't give me that sass."

"I wouldn't dream of it Dad." I smiled. "You didn't invite Grant did you?"

"No. We did however invite his parents." My mother clasped her hands together in front of her midnight blue gown. "That doesn't bother you does it?"

"No, not at all." I looked around.

"Nicholas." My father turned to him and offered him a firm handshake.

"Mr. Field." Nick accepted and wrapped his arm around my torso. "How was your trip sir?"

"It was good. And please enough with the Mr. Field and the sir. You are making me feel old." He smiled and his eyes twinkled.

"All right, Griffin." Nick turned to my mother and kissed her cheek. "Mrs. Field."

"Stop there young man, same goes for me." She patted his lapel.

He grinned and the music began. He turned to me. "Miss Field may I have this pleasure?"

"Why thank you kind sir." I blushed and placed my hand in his. He led me to the floor and we began the waltz.

Griffin POV

I looked at Rosemary. "I told you it would work." She grinned.

"Love, I give you full credit." She slipped her arm in my extended one. "Are sure this is the one?"

"Positive. He has proven himself loyal and true. Why wouldn't he be the one?"

"I don't know. Did you double the guard?" She lowered her tone.

"Yes, my dear. I would never put her in that kind of danger." I grimaced. Looking out into the crowd I saw my daughter dancing with Nicholas and she was smiling. A true genuine smile. A flash of movement from the side caught my gaze.

"Rosemary, honey." I whispered in her ear. She looked at me with big green eyes. "Got to Eileen."

She nodded swiftly and swept down the staircase. I moved towards the side of the room that I had seen the familiar face.

I walked out to the balcony and looked around. "Ah Mr. Field." A man's voice filtered out of the hall next to me.

"Grant." I grit out. "Why are you here?"

"I came to get my girlfriend back."

"You think she would come back to you?" I rose my eyebrow. "Are you serious?"

"Yes. She will for a price. Maybe a trade for someone she loves."

"She will not. She has a boyfriend. You remember Nicholas?"

"That little." He mumbled something unrepeatable under his breath. "Well it doesn't matter. I will have her."

"No." I grit. "No. You will not. Grant, have some respect. You caused her to have depression, social anxiety, and fear every night about you coming and hurting her." I pointed to her smiling and laughing with her mother and Nick. "Can't you see, she is happy. Son, I don't know what you think love is, but she is happy and as her father, I must protect her happiness."

Grant's eyes filled with tears and he snapped. He fell to his knees sobbing.

"Griffin, please forgive me." He grabbed my hand. "I am sorry for the hurt I caused your family. I will stay away. I swear."

"Grant, I accept your apology, but I believe you should apologize to the woman you hurt deeper than you hurt me."

Grant nodded. "Would you get her for me?" He whispered.

"Yes." I walked to the ballroom.

"Daddy." Eileen walked over to me. "Dance with me?" Her big blue eyes smiled into mine.

"In a moment. Darling, there is someone outside on the balcony who wishes to speak to you." I tried to sound light in my wording.

"Oh?" She wrinkled her brow. "I will be back." She kissed my cheek and swept out of the room.

"Griffin where is she going?" Nicholas walked over to me.

"She is going to do something that should have been done a long time ago." I nodded towards the balcony.

"No. It can't be." He started for the balcony. I reached a hand out to stop him.

"No. This is not your fight."

"That is the woman I love and want to marry, so yes it is." His eyes flashed dangerously.

"Just wait please." I asked.  He nodded and turned back to Rosemary.

Eileen POV

"I heard someone wanted to speak with me?" I walked out to the area my father had directed me to.

"Eileen?" The man looking out at the gardens turned.

"No." I gasped and turned to flee.

"No, Eileen wait." He grabbed my hand. "Please, hear me out then I will leave."

"Fine." I huffed. He sighed and expressed his thanks.

"Eileen, I came here with the intent of trying to get you back. Your father confronted me and reminded me of the hurt I caused. I am sorry Eileen. I know sorry will never heal the wounds I gave you. I know sorry will never fix the battle for your mind. I know I will never ever be able to look at you again with the same malice. I am terrified of my life now. There wasn't a day where I did not look at a picture of you, the ones we had taken when you were pregnant with Jonathon, and try not to plan revenge for getting me in so much trouble. I know that I don't deserve to even be in the same room at you. I know I did not deserve to ever try and lay a claim to you. Eileen what I am trying to say is I am sorry, please forgive me." He sobbed.

I laid a hand on his cheek lifting it to the light. "Grant." A tear slid down my face. "I forgive you. With all my heart I forgive you." He wrapped his arms around my torso and buried his head there. I cupped the top of his head and kissed it gently. "Grant you will always be the man who loved me, even though you hurt me. You will always be the man who I had my first baby with, you will always be Jonathon's daddy." He sobbed all the harder at the mention of our baby. "Thank you for coming to me for this." I whispered. "Thank you."

He looked up at me and stood. "No thank you." He gave me a lingering hug and then pulled back. I smiled at him and invited him to come with me inside.

"No, I should go. I have training." He shrugged. "I hope to see you again someday Eileen."

"I do too, Grant. I do too." I kissed his cheek and he kissed my hand then walked out of my parent's home.

Nicholas walked out to the balcony. "Are you okay baby?" He kissed my open mouth.

"Yeah." I smiled. "Never been better."

It was like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders and I was light and airy. "Shall we?" He offered me his arm.

"Wait." I stopped him. "I love you Nicholas Winston."

"I love you more Eileen Field."

I smiled and rested my head on his shoulder. He looped his arm around my waist and sighed contentedly. We stood there for a while then he pulled back.

"Eileen I need to ask you something."
