To you everything is funny

Authors note:
I'm sorry it took me so long to write this. I just started university and I'm extremely stressed out. I think I'll be able to write a little more from now on.
Also this chapter contains talking about racism, as Emily reads about the civil rights movement and asks Taylor about the details.
I'm german so if I used the wrong or inappropriate terms please tell me so I can edit it.

December 2016

It's been two days since Christmas and yesterday Taylors family went back home again.

Christmas day I didn't let go of Kit, till Taylor set me down at the evening and told me that I don't have to be scared that someone's gonna take her away, cause she's my doll.

The day after Christmas we went ice skating at a nearby rink. Austin had helped me to figure out how to skate.
One of the workers there took a picture of the five us, that now was sitting framed on my dresser.

In the evening we had watched one of the movies I got for Christmas, the one about the jungle, and I loved it.

So yesterday I spent hours on the internet and reading in Taylor.

Encyclopedia about the jungle and the animals that live there. I used the globe I got to learn about Brazil. Taylor just let me be and told me if I wanted we could go to the library to pick up more books about Brazil, but I told her that it was fine.

"Em. Hey can I talk to you real quick." Taylor walked in. I was sitting in the play tent reading in the book about Melody.

"Yeah." She smiled and sat down in front of me. "I have two friends that would love to meet you. Is it okay if they come over this afternoon?" She asked and I nodded.

"Okay I'll tell them that you're fine with it." She was getting up again.
"Taylor?" She turned to look at me.
"Can we bake unicorn muffins so I can sell them at my Cafe?" I asked, making her laugh.

"Yeah we can. I'll call them real quick and than we can bake." I smiled and got up.

In the kitchen I picked up my apron and put it on, so when Taylor walked in I had already pulled my hair back, moved the stool to the counter and was wearing my apron.

She put her apron as well before pulling some ingredients out.
"Lemon muffins? Or chocolate?"
"Lemon and then we can put on pink icing and sprinkles." Taylor nodded and smiled at me.

"Alright let's get to work then."
She handed me the ingredients and I put them into the bowl.

"Do you want to stir?" She asked as she handed me the mixer and I nodded. Taylor held the bowl while I mixed the dough. We put inside the unicorn muffin forms and then in the oven for twenty minutes.

"What did you read before?" The blonde asked me and I smiled.
"The book about Melody. It's really good. But why do the people treat her different from the other little girls? She did nothing wrong."

"No she didn't. But in the time she lived in and before that people were very mean to black people." "But why?"
"You know sometimes people don't like things that are different or they don't want to give up the power they fell like they deserve cause they had it over the last centuries.""It's not right."
"No it's not and most people know that today.""Why not all? I mean were all human and we all want to be happy. And Melody is just a little girl that wants to be happy and grow up like I am." I furrowed my brows together, trying to understand why people could be so mean. "You're right and that's why what happened back then should never happen again." Taylor said and picked me up.

"You're a very smart little girl." She said kissing my forehead.
"Are some people still mean to black people?" I asked her and she sighed.
"Yeah some people are."

"Then we have to tell them that they are being mean that it's wrong." I told her while looking into her blue eyes.
"I don't think it's that easy. Do you know someone who never changes his mind and doesn't listen to other peoples opinions." Ms. Higgins came into my mind. "Yeah." "Well most of the people that are men think that they are right and everyone else is wrong." I nodded biting my lip trying to understand everything Taylor had just told me.

"Is there a word for this?" She looked at me and nodded. "Racism." I repeated the word in my head before nodding.
"When I see someone being mean to another person I'll help them." Taylor smiled and kissed my forehead.

"I'm very proud that you want to stand up for other people." I nodded nuzzling my head back into her neck. "I think we need to check on the muffins." The muffins were good so we pulled them out of the oven and let them cool. I was silent thinking about how unfair it was that people were treated differently.
"Do the big people help?" I suddenly asked and made Taylor look at me confused.

"With the muffins?" She asked with a silly grin."No with ending racism. I mean the people that have loads of power." She thought about the answer while putting the cupcakes on a plate so we could decorate them.

"Every person has their own beliefs and ideas of what's right and wrong. Most of them do help but some say they'll help or that they want it to end eventhough they don't really do anything. They just talk about it instead of doing something."

"Kay." I said watching Taylor as she started to make the icing. I pulled the pink color out of the small box and handed it to her. Together we put the icing on and then decorated them with loads of different colored sprinkles.

"It's one pm now. They'll be here in an hour, do you want to eat a snack now our wait till they are here?" She asked me after we cleaned the kitchen.

"I'll wait. Can I take the muffins with me so I can sell them in my Cafe?" I asked and she nodded.

"I'll carry them for you." Back in my room Taylor put the plate on the counter of my Cafe before looking at me.

"What do you want to do now?"
"Can we read Melodys story together?"
She nodded and together we cuddled up in the small tipi. Me sitting on her lap and her holding the book. We read for a while before we heard the bell ring.

I got up and let Taylor crawl out of my tipi before I followed her towards the entrance. She opened the door and the first person I saw was like really tall. Even taller than Taylor. The woman had blonde hair and was really pretty.
"Hey Tay." She said and hugged Taylor who greeted her as well. The second woman that was now coming in was a lot smaller. She had brown hair and beautiful brown eyes.

Taylor and hugged as well before all eyes were focused on me. Suddenly I was very glad that I had picked Lulu up on the way to the door and that I was holding her now, cause the two were a little scary.

But I remembered what I had read in my book. Sometimes you just have to have courage and do whats right. Not that introducing myself was as important as standing up for your own rights.

I took a deep breath and pulled Lulu closer to my chest before walking a little closer towards them.

I held my hand out and smiled.
"Hey my names Emilie Marjorie Swift. It's nice to meet you. What's your name?" The brunette was standing closer to me and she was smiling at me.
She kneeled down a little bit so she could look me in the eye while shaking my hand.

"Hello Ms. Emilie. My name is Selena. It's a pleasure to meet such a pretty little girl." I giggled a bit.

"You're really beautiful." I told her and her smile got even bigger. "Well thats very sweet of you." She stood up so the other woman could introduce herself. She had to kneel down almost completely.

"Hey there. I'm Karlie and I heard a lot about you. Taylor talks about you all the time." I looked at Taylor who looked a little red but smiled.

I smiled at Karlie as she shook my hand, after the woman was standing again. We started walking towards the living room.

"It smells so good. Did you guys bake?" Karlie asked and I nodded excitedly. "We made unicorn muffins." "Really. I want to try one." Selena said and I heard Taylor laugh.

"Well I guess we have to see if Cafe Emilie is already opened." I giggled and ran to my room. I heard Taylor explain the other woman what was going on as they followed me to my room.

"Well thats a very pretty room you have." Selena who entered the room first said and Karlie who was right behind he nodded in agreement.
"The perfect room for a little princess."
"Thank you." I said.

I was already standing behind the counter of my Cafe. I only played with it twice at the first day that I had and once during  Christmas it was boring with just me and Taylor.

"How much is one of those unicorn muffins." Selena asked and I thought about it. The last times I hadn't sold real food so I didn't make any money.  I decided on one dollar.

"1$" I said grinning at her.
Taylor raised an eyebrow at me but I gave her a smile. "Cheeky little girl. Trying to earn some pocket money here?" Karlie asked with a grin and I tried to raise an eye brown like Taylor but I don't think I managed to pull that off.

"Whats pocket money?" I heard Taylor groan and Karlie laugh. "Guess now you have to give her pocket money. Sorry Tay."

"I'm a business woman." I said proudly.
"Just like Kit." I said as I pointed at the doll on my bed. "She helped her mom to earn money to help her family to keep their home during the great depression in the summer of 1932." I explained making the two guests look at me in amazement and Taylor with pride.

"All right. I'm definitely gonna support young flourishing business." Selena said and pulled a dollar bill out of her bag. She handed it to me and took one of the muffins I grinned at her.

"This girl is smart one. She's gonna outsmart you one day Taylor." Karlie said also giving me a dollar bill and taking one of the muffins.

Taylor wanted to give me a dollar bill as well but I shook my head. "You worked for the Cafe. You get it for free." "Oh now I work for you?" She asked an eyebrow raised and I grinned at her nodding.

"Come here you cheeky little girl." She said and picked me up. As soon as I was in her arms she started to tickle me making me laugh and giggle, till I couldn't breathe.

"Stop... please..."She stopped and looked at me. I heard Selena and Karlie laugh and looked over to them. They were just watching us. We both took a muffin and sat down on the floor next to the two woman. I leaned against Taylor who gave me a smile.

"You two look so much a like." Karlie said looking from me to Taylor and back.

"Nah Taylors eyes are electric blue and mine are more dark ocean blue." I said while taking a bite out of my muffin.
"How do you know so many words?" Karlie looked at me.

"I read them." I said in duh tone. I mean come on how do you words if you haven't read them.Taylor laughed at her friends face and had to hide a small smile.

"But you're four. How can you read at such a young age?" "I was taught by a room mate and I've been reading whenever I had the opportunity." The last word I just use to show them that I was a big kid already, but sadly I had some problem pronouncing it.

The three woman laughed a little.
"Thats very impressive." Selena said and I smiled at her. "Thank you for saying that." I said making Karlie and Selena look from me to Taylor.

"She really is a mini you."

I looked at Taylor, who smiled at me.
"Well she's my girl what do you expect."
I beamed at her and moved so I was curled up in her arms.

"If I'm you're my girl, than you're my Taylor." I said making her smile.
"That's alright with me."  She said still holding me. The other two woman cooed at the sight.

"Why don't we go sit down in the living room." Karlie said and we others nodded following. I grabbed my book and my coloring book with pencils.
While the three women talked I was sitting on the ground my coloring book on the couch table and colored in a fairy picture.

At some point Selena sat down next to me. "Do you think I can color with you? Those two want to go cooking dinner now." I looked up to see that Taylor and Karlie were walking to the kitchen. It kinda made me feel sad that I wasn't asked if I wanted to help make dinner, cause we always make dinner together but I nodded.

I moved the package with the pencils to her and put the book so that we both could color in the book.

For the first few minutes we were silent just both doing our part of the picture, but then she started talking.
"Whats your favorite movie?" She asked me and I looked at her. "Uhm Lea to the rescue." I answered. I mean I just saw it yesterday but it was so good.

"What's it about?" She looked at me.
"A girl named Lea, who has to go into the rainforest of Brazil in order to find her brother."

She nodded smiling."We watched it yesterday in the evening, cause Santa got it for me for Christmas. Did you know Taylor knows Santa?" I asked her and she looked at me with a big smile.

"Really she does? She never told me. I gotta have a word with her, cause I really want to meet him." "Me too, but she said that he doesn't want to meet just one kid, cause then it wouldn't be fair for everyone." I explained and smiled sadly.

"That sounds like Santa, doesn't it?" She asked and I nodded. "Yeah it does. I just thought maybe he'd make an exception for me, because he forgot me the last three years."

Her smile seemed to get a little bit sad but she was still smiling. "If I should ever meet him I'll tell him what you said." She promised and I nodded.
We went back to drawing until Taylor called from the kitchen.

They had made Lasagna and already set the table. I looked around to see if I could help with something, but couldn't find anything that needed to be done, so I sat down next to Karlie and across from Taylor.

Someone had already poured me a glass of apple juice. We started eating and I smiled, the food was so good.
"You did a good job." I told the two women who smiled at me.
"Thank you."

"Emilie. What I wanted to ask what kind of books do you read?" Karlie asked before taking another book.
"All kinds. I used to read school books, but Taylor and I read lots of children books, like the little prince, Peter Pan, Matilda. Right now I'm reading the books I got for Christmas and I'm reading about the rainforest."

"Why about the rain forest?"
"Cause I got a movie about the rainforest and I really want to go there one day." I answered before taking another bite. "And what books did you get for Christmas?" She asked and I thought for a second.

"Uhm two books about Kits life, one about Julie and the one I'm reading about Melody.""They are from American Girl." Taylor added.

"Kit was the business woman right?"
I nodded, because I just had taken another bite and couldn't answer.
"What about the other two girls what makes them special?"

"I haven't read about Julie yet, but Melody is a singer that wants to help the civil rights movement in 1964. She wants to end... What's that word again?"  I asked Taylor, who smiled looking at me.
"You mean racism?" I nodded and smiled at her.

"She wants to end racism."
Karlie nodded she was smiling.
"Emilie tell them what you told me this morning after you started to read the book." I looked at Taylor. What did she mean? I didn't really say anything unusual did I?
"What do you mean?"
"When you asked me why they treated Melody different from the other girls."
I remembered out conversation.

"You mean when you explained why they were mean to her and that it was because of her skin color?" She nodded.
I tried to remember what I said that apparently was so outstanding.
"I said that we have to tell the mean people to stop, because they are being mean." I remembered and she nodded.

"And I said that we have to stand up for them instead of talking about it." Taylor nodded again, the smile she was wearing was definitely a proud one.
I looked over at Selena and Karlie who both were starring at me and before I knew it Karlie hugged me, at first I flinched but then I curled up into her embrace, eventhough she didn't hug as good as Taylor.

"God you're so smart. I wonder where you'll go one day." She said before she let go of me.

After dinner I found myself on the couch again. The three had told me to pick a movie while they cleaned the kitchen. I mean choosing was quick, cause I really wanted to watch the other movie I got for Christmas.

During the movie I was sitting between Taylor and Selena, at some point Taylor left for the bathroom, but now I was cold, cause I had been cuddling with her, so careful to watch her reaction I moved to Selena and leaned against her. To my surprise she just smiled and opened her arms for me.

So when Taylor came back I was sitting on Selenas lap my head on her chest and both of us wrapped in a blanket.
She was carrying Lulu when she saw me cuddling with Selena she smiled widely.

"Look who I found." She handed me Lulu and I immediately nuzzled my face in the soft bunny fur. Taylor sat down again and leaned her head against Karlie.

Selena was looking down at me and Lulu. "Who's that? She was with you when we met but she didn't introduce herself." She asked and I giggled making her smile.

"Her name's Lulu and she's my best friend in the whole world."
"Its very nice to meet you Lulu."
She shook one of Lulus paws making me smile. The film had been playing for a long time before I got tired and fell asleep.

"Night Emilie." I heard Selena, who was playing with my hair, say.
"Night Selly. Night Kar. Night Tay." I mumbled before closing my eyes.
