Chapter 09
Yura furiously typed. A coffee mug was lying empty beside her; it might have been her sixth that day. She didn't really know, she had lost count already. The only way she was keeping track of the time passing by was the occasional glance at the clock hung on the wall to her right. She sighed as she clicked one key and stretched her hands, thinking her work was done. That she had finally decoded the file left behind by Areum.
But then, the same image popped onto the screen. The same image that Yura was tired of seeing displayed on her laptop over and over again. She let out a scream, grabbing her coffee mug and throwing it onto the wall. But the satisfying sound of the mug crashing against the wall and breaking into million pieces didn't follow. Yura turned to look at the direction where she threw the mug and scowled, seeing Jeongin standing there, holding the mug in his hand as he smiled at her.
"You shouldn't break stuff. Noona won't like it when she comes back." Jeongin spoke softly.
"If she comes back." Yura muttered, frustrated by looking at the screen at her laptop. Jeongin furrowed his eyebrows at her remark, grabbing a seat beside Yura as he carefully set the mug down to where it was sitting before.
"I was thinking, and- stop looking at that Yura, you're only shitting yourself." Jeongin sternly said, closing the laptop.
"You were thinking?" Yura asked.
"Yes, I was thinking, and I realized that noona's behavior was really, really different in this case compared to all her other cases." he started.
"well duh, we already figured that out, don't you have any new information?" Yura snapped at him.
"Let me finish. So, noona has been really different while acting on this. This USB she's left behind is proof that she knew something like this was going to happen. But my question is that if she knew this was going to happen, she would've told Chan hyung, or Hyunjin hyung, or Jisung hyung, or Minho hyung. Like she always has when she's dealt with something like this. Like the time she shut down Kang Co and exposed their human trafficking ring? But this time she didn't. So my guess is that this time it's something personal. Like someone she knew was in grave danger." Jeongin explained.
"So one of us?" Yura asked, surprised that Jeongin could ever use his brain and come out with thoughts as useful as these were. To her, he will always be prankster who loves the attention he gets.
"No, it couldn't be one of us. If it was, noona would've told us all about it immediately."
"Well, she was going to, she just needed to confirm things first. You heard it from Hyunjin, she was going to tell us the day she disappeared." she dismissed, genuinely intrigued by the question Jeongin was raising.
"No, noona wouldn't have waited to confirm something like this. She would've just told us that she had a lead, and we needed to stack up security. This is something more... complicated. That's why noona waited to confirm everything."
"But still you think it's about someone personal?"
"Yes." Jeongin confirmed.
"Then was it Felix in danger?" she asked uncertainly.
"No, it's not likely. Noona would have not met up with him until she was sure he was safe. And she met up with him literally a day before she went missing."
"So not one of us then. What about your parents?" Yura asked, looking back at the image displayed on her laptop.
"Nah, if it was our parents, noona would have invited them to stay over at our house so that she could guard them herself."
"THEN WHO?!" Yura shouted, frustrated with Jeongin's vague answers.
"I think it's someone who died. Who was close to noona. And I think she finally found a way to get justice for him." Jeongin spoke quietly, keeping his eyes on the ground.
He knew who he was talking about. The one person in his, and his noona's life that kept the both of them happy, and together. And when he died, the two of them were left broken. Their family fell apart after his death, Areum and him wanting to honor his life while their parents wanted to try to forget him, so that they could ignore the pain. That was why the two siblings lived away from their family. Away from the house that held all of their memories with him, every hallway marking a special memory of the three of them together.
"Who are you talking about Jeongin?" Yura asked, looking confused.
"Our elder brother. Yang Minjun. He was murdered three years ago."
