Chapter Two: Her...
Before Adora and I met, we were distinctive people then, especially me. If I had learned the trouble we would stir up, the old me would avoid everything from taking place. But like I said before, times have changed. Everything began at Northwich High, of all places. The first time we met face to face. It was in the midst of the year as we all arrived back from winter break. Fifteen minutes early as always, I went through my locker to grab my morning class's textbooks.
"Guess who?" Someone covered my eyes.
It was clearly my boyfriend, Sebastian Fox, so I was determined to mess with him.
"Is it that cute boy from History class?" I guessed.
He uncovered my eyes and pressed me against the lockers. I saw that sly, slick smile of his, gawking me down.
"I better be that boy." He leaned his forehead against mine.
"Always, Sebastian," I confessed before he pecked my lips.
We were the perfect match. Daddy's girl matched with the star football player always attracted everyone's attention. I remembered what he was wearing because it was so out of the ordinary for him. He usually wears casual clothes as he doesn't put much thought into his outfit, but that day was different. Rather, he looked more presentable.
"What girl are you trying to impress?" I kidded while I unbuttoned his sleeves.
Sebastian jerked his body away from me, fixing his sleeves.
"Sky, don't mess this outfit up. I look nice for a reason," he chuckled, "it's for you. I arranged a date between us. All we have to do is play hooky for a little while." I rolled my eyes at him before moving his body to close my locker.
"I'm not doing that again. Anyway, I'm showing this girl a tour of the school," I briefed him before heading to the office.
Sebastian followed me trying to persuade me by saying, "Get Iris to do it, she loves meeting new people."
"Trust me when I say I have tried her and all my friends to do it. We'll hang out another time, I promise." I let him know.
"Oh, come on, Sky. You bailed on me the last time we planned to spend time together. What makes this time different?" He complained.
"It's different because I didn't promise you then. I had some important matters to handle," I argued.
"All you did was boring political stuff with your dad. You realize your father has a squad of people that can help him, right?" Sebastian said.
"He does, however he says I'm better at assisting him. I can't skip, I'm on thin ice with my parents for leaving school grounds with you and you dumbass friends." I playfully pushed him.
"That's not my fault. You and your slow ass got caught, not me." he snickered.
"Well, my dad doesn't see it that way, you know how he is. He expects me to be this angel descended from heaven. So much pressure for such one girl." I confessed to him.
Just before I got to the office entryway, Sebastian pushed me gently against the wall.
"I know, I see the stress your old man is giving you. I see it is both affecting you and our relationship," he pulled me closer to him, "I'll even say I'm partially to blame for making you so stressed. If you aren't busy this weekend, I would love to make you less worried." He proposed.
"How does Saturday sound? It's the one day out of the week I'm not doing anything." I beamed at us getting time to spend together.
"Sounds amazing," He moved my hair out of my face and placed his thumb on my cheek, "I love you, Sky. Remember that. I would do anything for you." He murmured.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, telling him, "I love you too, Sebby." We were immersed into each other's eyes before I leaned in to kiss him.
"Are you Skylar?" We turned to see who interrupted us as I realized it was the girl I'm suppose to show around.
"Um, yes but I'm in the middle of something, so wait." I told her.
"I'll leave you to it, babe," he kissed the top of my head, "you better not bail on me, Sky!" He strolled elsewhere, shifting my concerns to the new girl.
Little did I know how extraordinary she would be, but as now I stared at this skinny, white chick who is ticking me off.
"Thanks for ruining a moment." Annoyed, I told her how I felt.
She shrugged her shoulders, only irritating me more.
"Tragic. Is that supposed to be your boyfriend?" She asked me.
"Yes and we were having a special moment before you came." I folded my arms at her.
"Well, you can get your moment back once you show me where all my classes are." She sassed me.
Instead of patronizing her, I scanned through her schedule to find all of her class. I found out her name is Adora Nixon. Lucky me gets to have her now for four class periods. If her attitude stays like this, my classes will be especially terrible.
"Well, Adora," I gave her schedule back to her, "you'll follow me until fourth-period bell and back again for eighth period. As for the rest of your classes, get nerd to help you." I declared.
She rolled her eyes at me before putting her schedule in her backpack.
"Lead the way, then." Adora said.
We went down the hallway as it became clogged with students. Adora found amusement in looking at our rusty lockers and grubby hallway for I remained focused on making my time with her short-lived. We had at last reached Algebra II, but Sebastian's best friend wrapped his arms around both our necks.
"Hello, ladies." He whistles, hopefully at Adora.
"Nice to see you again, Caleb." I say as both Adora and I took his arm around us.
"Skylar, introduce me to your new friend." He fixed his shirt.
"We aren't friends." We said in sync before she let him know, "Adora is my name, I'm new here."
Caleb kept eyes on her, "I see you're heading to Mr. Campbell's class. Trust me when I tell you will love his class."
Probably wanting no more of Caleb, she walked in by herself. He looked at me with a grin on his face.
"Weird one she is." He told me.
"Not every girl is attracted to you. Stop thinking with your dick." I rolled my eyes before following behind Adora as the first period bell rang.
------------------------------------
"Romeo & Juliet. Star-crossed lovers. Forbidden to love one another because of their family being bitter rivals. One of Shakespeare's greatest works by far." Mrs. LaDessa took a stab at exciting us about Shakespeare's work.
She did poorly on doing so. It was the last class of the day and her speech caused half of the English class to fall asleep.
"Mrs. LaDessa, we already read this book during freshman year." Someone yelled.
"Well, your book you were supposed to read is under investigation. Until we find another book, we'll be doing Shakespeare again." The teacher clarified.
As she continued teaching to her class, Sebastian whispered.
"Don't you wish you had skipped with me, now?" He teased me.
I rolled my eyes at him even though I would have rather skipped than be listening to this.
"Anyway, how was your time with Adora?" Sebastian asked.
"She likes history as she kept asking questions about the school and this town. It's as if she hasn't lived here before." I admitted.
"Well, she wasn't." He said.
I looked at him confused and said, "What does that mean?"
He explained, "She wasn't home-schooled or anything like that. Supposedly, she used to live in California," It said.
An outsider? We don't see those often. I shifted my seat to look Adora, sitting alone, doodling on her paper. Before I could get to know more, Mrs. LaDessa slammed on our desk.
"Mrs. Jackson!" Mrs. LaDessa yelled at me.
To both my high school and Northwich, my name is Skylar Jackson. My parents are Naomi and Jey Jackson, secret employees of my dad. I also had a sister who wasn't related to neither the Jackson's or me. They said, me not being revealed as a Louis is what's best for me. Sebastian only found out the third month of us dating.
Wait.
--------------
Beck interrupted my story, shocked at what he heard.
"You are a Louis? Like the Louis's who runs this place?" He sounded annoyed at my last name.
"Yeah, I'm his daughter. Like I said, my identity was supposed to be kept under wraps. I still don't know why they did so." I told him.
He wrote all that I said before looking back at me, "That's so crazy. A Louis here for gay charges," Beck titled his head to the side. He still must be confused. "If you are a Louis, couldn't they set something up to get you out?"
I looked away from him and stared at the window.
"I did a lot to get here and I may have caused a scene," I shook my head, trying to get the thought out of my head, and looked back at him, "I'll explain later." I told him, getting back to the story
----------
"Yes, ma'am?" I said.
"Is Sebastian causing you trouble?" She glared down at the both of us.
"No, Mrs. LaDessa. He isn't bothering me." I truthfully told her.
She moved away from our desk and back to her teaching.
"I see you guys know this story front and back, familiar as it is, I created a project to make this interesting." She picked up stacks of paper and handed them out, "Romeo & Juliet showed how two unlike people can develop to be lovers. Your project must show you and your unalike pair the resemblances you both have. Some partners might spiral into friendship, others lovers. Since I know some of you guys are close already, I made certain the partners were set at random." She described the project.
As she posted a piece of paper, groans came across the room. For the most part, we all know each other so this should be an easy A.
"Your partners are posted on the board." She announced.
The students rushed to see who their partner was. People groaned over the annoyance of their partner and some was glad they didn't get their least favorite person here. Out of anyone I could have been partnered up with, only by the act of God that she chose Adora and me to be together.
"We meet again." She gave me a malicious smiled.
I now have to deal with more of her bullshit. What did I ever do to deserve it?
"Me too, Kayla." I responded, scornful.
We sat at my table as Sebastian got partnered up with some girl.
"How about we go over your house to do this project?" Adora said.
"How about we just make stuff up so we don't have to spend time together?" I suggested.
She rolled her eyes and focused on me, "I see I already struck a nerve with you. I'm just trying to adjust to living here. People are watching me." She whispered the last part.
"What people?" I whispered back.
She didn't answer back instead rummaged through her backpack. She took awhile, but she came back up, setting two twenty-dollar bills on the table. I stared at her, looking at her bewildered.
"What is this?" I questioned her.
"Money, Skylar," she sighed, "I'm in some deep shit. People are making sure I'm an exceptional citizen and such. They are watching my every step. If you pretend to be my friend and make me look like a good civilian, I'll pay." She revealed.
What did she do to have people on her tail?
"Twenty more dollars." I tested how serious she was. I wasn't expecting another twenty to be put done. She must be serious.
"All right, fine. Why me though?" I asked.
"You're popular," she said before getting her paper and pencil.
"No," I answered right away, "what about yours?"
She gazed away from me and replied with, "Not mines either. I guess we'll go to the library."
Once more, I overlooked her peculiar ways and gave her my number as she did likewise. We decided when we get to the library on Friday to get work done.
------------------------------------
"Interesting way of meeting each other." Beck joked.
I leaned my head against the stone wall, wrapped around my thin blanket. The sun poured down as we spoke, the small light from the ceiling wasn't enough to see. I could just scarcely view Beck.
"It's fun. If it wasn't for her giving me money. I wouldn't have never talked to her again after that project. I'm glad I stayed," I smiled at the thought of her, "I couldn't imagine my future without her."
Mela walked towards our cages, bag in hand, and gave me a small smile.
"Nice story Skylar," She turned so she would look at the both of us "well, it's lights out. I'll be back one week from now." She announced.
"A week from now? Where are you going? You and Tripp switch every few days, not a week." Beck complained.
"I'm sorry, but I have business to attend. I promise, I won't be long." She turned the lights off before exiting, leaving only the two of us.
"This Tripp guy sounds scary." I blurted out, getting on my bed.
"He is. Tripp's a fucking asshole," Beck said, harsh, "we'll pick this up tomorrow. Goodnight, Skylar." He Immediately
I sighed, covering myself in my blanket.
"Goodnight, Beck."
