Chapter Three
"Skylar..." A whisper ran over the room.
"Beck?" I gradually woke up to a lit room.
Neither Beck nor Mela was in the room as my confine is now wide open. What is happening?
"Follow my voice..." The voice seemed so recognizable. Is this a test?
Without a moment's hesitation, I stepped out of my cubicle. Just like mines the door was wide open, yet there was no Beck. Same went for Mela as her desk was completely empty. It was like a ghost town. The voice kept calling me to follow its voice, so I inadvertently went after the voice, which in turn brought me to the entrance. Once outside, the sun beamed down on me as I searched for the source of the voice. I looked around the entire building, but found nothing. Am I already losing it here?
Before I was about to give up, I noticed a girl, squatting near a patch of flowers close to the building. She must know what is happening. I walked towards her. The closer I got to her, the more I got a vivid picture of her. Their face was curved to the side, preventing me from seeing her entire face. All I could make out was her copper, gold hair that flowed down her back. Her pale, white plucked the vibrant flowers. She seems so similar, like we met. Before I could get to her, she turned her head towards me and smiled. I stepped back, stunned at who I was seeing.
"Adora?" I said in disbelief.
Adora's here. She's really here. I couldn't control my legs from wanting to be her. All I wanted was to be with her, it's been so long since they tore us from each other. At last, right when I was near her, she faded, leaving me head first into the flowers. I held my head in pain. Instead of Adora helping me up, all I got is laughter. Why is she acting this?
"You ran so fast there. For a moment there I thought you would have made it," she cut off her laugh as she kneeled down, getting close to me, "just like in the field. You weren't fast now, and you definitely weren't fast then." She shouted at me.
I didn't know how to reply, all I could say is, "I'm sorry, Adora. You know I am." She scoffed at me, only getting angry at me.
"Did I needed to throw more money at you? Would a few bucks make you run faster?" She said as money piled on top of me, preventing me from moving.
Why was she acting like this? She isn't acting like the Adora I know. I tried to escape the money pile, but I felt myself drowning. Adora showed some kindness towards me and pulled me up. It all changed when she grabbed my shoulder, shaking me around.
"We could have been together! We could've had a wonderful future away from here. But no, you had to spoil it all." She spewed out.
Every word she said cut deep. This wasn't the Adora I knew, but her remarks made sense. Was it truly my fault? If I had ran quicker, I wouldn't be stuck here. I was able to get off of Adora's grasps, but I couldn't escape her voice. She repeated my name in vain, gradually growing louder. I covered my ears, hoping it would stop yet it continued.
"Stop it! Please, just stop." I pleaded over again.
----------------------
A loud bang rang throughout the room, "Get up!"
I hopped out of my bed, shuddered by my dream. I tried focusing on my surroundings, hoping that would calm my nerves. Beck's at his cage, looking into my cage with a worried expression on his face. Upon further investigating, I was back in my cage too. Everything was back to normal besides a muscular man pressing against my the bars. He must be the Tripp that Beck talked about.
"You over-slept. You're lucky I'm being nice, newbie." He pointed out, "now listen here, Skylar because I will only say this once. My name is Tripp. Don't be slick and grant me another name because I won't hesitate to snap on you. I'm not like Mela. I will not genuflect a freak like you nor will I have sympathy just because you have a tragic, sob story. You will listen or we will have issues." Tripp edict me.
I couldn't manage Beck having to deal with this for two years. Not wanting to try his patience, I nodded my head in understanding. That caused him to grin.
"Good." He said, shoving a tin plate into the food slot of my cage. I peered down at what I could just barely call breakfast. On the plate contained some bland oatmeal.
"This is all?" I asked him
He chuckled before letting me know, "Yes, this is all. So you appreciate it or I'll cut breakfast out of your meals." Tripp snickered at me before going to his desk. Beck was right. So far Tripp is acting like a huge dick.
"Skylar," Beck called out, "are you okay? You talked a lot about Adora.
The growing agony filled my head as I placed my hands over them to make them stop. Everything felt so real. Adora seemed so real.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine, Beck." I nibbled on the oatmeal to take my mind off of my dream. The oatmeal's appalling. No cinnamon or sugar to make it taste better. Even still, I completed my plate. Since getting caught by officials I haven't eaten at all. I needed something to sustain me. I couldn't linger for lunch. Tripp came back with two handcuffs in hand.
"The both of you guys have work to do. The outside is need of you two's assistance. Be prepared for some busy work." He revealed our schedule today.
Tripp went to unlock my cage until Beck let out a loud groan. Keys still in my cage, he moved up to Beck's confinement, slamming his hand on the cage bars.
"What did you say, cock jockey?" He hissed at him.
"Cock jockey? Are you seriously using that nickname again? Come up with something new Tripp. You don't faze me anymore." Beck bravely insisted.
Beck seemed so serious as he beamed down at him, but Tripp didn't take as such. He blurted out laughing. I assume he has been drinking. He pointed at him as he faced me, "This what you shouldn't do," he peered back at Beck, "I could break you, you know that right? I can prove what I am capable of to Skylar." Tripp threatened Beck.
"What are you going to do? Shackle me to the wall again? Beat me down as I'm helpless? Just admit it you are weak and the only thing that will fuel your ego is beating down on the weak." Beck argued.
"Oh, Beck. I get that your sentence is about to be up, but it's a little too late to be responding like a man now. You are as weak as when you came here. Now, I will give you another chance before this 'weak' man beat your ass. Don't test me, got it?" Tripp exclaimed.
Beck paused before telling him, "Got it?"
