Chapter 2- Bad Nugget
Eve opened her eyes. She starred up at the stars. The big bright moon was in the corner of her eye. She blinked. And she blinked again. Sitting up, she winced and looked down at her foot. There was a giant cut, but she didn't worry much about it. Looking around herself she noticed the eerie light coming from behind her. She steadily got up and walked over. It was a lamp post along a road. On the other side of the road were shops and neighborhoods. There were little trees in the area, but you could see some in the distance.
"Where am I? What happened? I didn't do anything did I?" She looked down at her side, "My organs are still intact."
Her stomach made a growling noise. "How long have I been here?" Suddenly she was disturbed by a rush of emotions. Eve got all the past memories back. She dragged her foot along the gravel on the side of the road.
She didn't look for a certain place. She just wanted food, or maybe she just needed a ride to the base. She shook her head and told herself, "I'm not going back just yet. I need to know where I am."
She ran across the road. A car honked its horn at Eve. "Gosh were did that come from."
Her eyes spotted a small general store. "I think after all I've done I could steal a few snacks." The doors slid open slowly. The lights flickered a lot. A fat man with a dirty beard sat at the front flipping through pages of a newspaper. He didn't even gaze towards Eve. She walked down the aisle. The echo of her shoes squeaking on the floor tempted to tease her. She grabbed a bag of chips and looked back at the counter. The man seemed to be asleep.
She went over to the freezers and grabbed a bottle of milk. Eve looked back again stuffing them into her new hoodie. She pulled the hood over her face and ripped off the tag. She bolted out the door. Eve ran around the corner and slumped down the wall. She closed her eyes and inhaled fresh air but immediately started coughing.
"Shhh the old fatty might call the cops again." A very tall boy held a cigarette between his fingers. There where two other boys behind him.
"Hey what did you steal?" One of them whispered.
The other perked up, "How'd you do that? He's always eating things himself. I wouldn't think he'd let you take any of it without paying?"
"I- I didn't steal this."
The tall one walked over handing her the cigarette, "Obviously you did. You bolted out the store. Here want one?"
"No I don't smoke," Eve shoved his cigarette back in his hand.
"Dude he's asleep! I call all the slushies." He ran into the store.
"Wait where are you guys going?" Eve panicked.
The tall guy yanked her hair, "To teach the old man a lesson. You can come join us. We aren't here to steal cash."
"Hey!" Eve yanked her hair back.
"Ha ha! I drew him a mustache to go with his terrible beard. Should I draw a little something extra."
"Let's confirm he's a dude, but on his face." The two boys held a marker in each hand.
The tall one walked over to Eve, "So are you like a rebel, bad nugget? To be honest you don't look like the robber type."
"I'm poor alright. I have to eat something." Eve looked at her pockets. The milk spilled everywhere.
"Here have my hood. It gets pretty cold at night." He pulled the hood over his head and handed it over. Eve pulled it over her own head and started to wipe milk off her chip bag.
The two boys laughed. They drew a few things on the man's face. One spilled their drink all over the floor. The other one went to the back of the store. Eve glanced over at the back. It looked like there was nothing else but a dumpster in front of a fence. The boy jumped the fence.
"Don't worry about him. He'll be back."
"So do you do this all the time?"
"Give my hoodie away? Yeah I loose them all the time."
Eve giggled, "That's not what I meant."
"We come by ever so often. How about you? I'm sure if you are poor then you steal food often."
Eve thought about telling him what happened. It was too risky to give information out like that. She pulled out her best lies and made one good enough to use, "I actually just moved here. My window was open, so why not have a little fun."
He laughed and shrugged, "Yeah I guess so. Would you like to hang with us? I'm sure it will be great."
Eve was about to say yes when the boy came back over the fence. He carried a crow bar. He smirked and ran into the store.
"What is he up to?" Eve eyed the boy.
The tall guy started to walk towards the store, "I don't know. Let's find out."
The doors slid open again. The boy who stayed was chugging a milk bag. The boy with the crow bar was behind the counter pushing the fat man out of the way. Once the man was out of the way he looked at the tall guy, "Want to help?" The tall guy answered no.
"You aren't going to-"
He smacked the register. It didn't open, but the noisy alarms went off. The fat man twitched. Eve took the tall guys arm, "We have to get out of here!"
"No duh," one boy rolled his eyes.
The other dropped the crow bar, "Well that sucks."
"The front door is closing!" Eve yelled.
The tall guy walked towards the back, "We can't walk around the front. We need to go to the back. Come on, hurry!"
Eve ran with them. They found the back door locked. "Some one needs to pick this and fast." Eve's heart was pounding.
The tall guy started to pick the lock. The police were opening the front doors. The fat man was still asleep. "How much longer guys?"
"Its not easy. Go find the keys." The tall boy ordered the others.
"Hold it right there!" The policemen grabbed the two boys. "You guys aren't going anywhere!"
"I got it!" The tall boy shoved the door open.
"Run!" Eve blasted a wind towards the police. She shot vines to grab the boys. She lit the door on fire and ran through. The tall boy stood outside wide eyed. Eve pulled him up, "What! We need to get going. The government is going to kill me."
