∆ TWENTY FOUR ∆
I strolled into the class a tired look on my face. Throughout the weekend, I was moody due to the incident which happened last week at the river.
The punctual ones amongst my classmates were in the class. Most of them arrive during the assembly or after the assembly, only a few would arrive before the assembly time and I happened to be amongst those few once in a blue moon.
I spotted Zara in her seat writing furiously in her notebook as she copied a book place on her table. She took a quick glance at me, a surprised look on her face then carried on writing. Two of our classmates were also beside her copying from the book on the table. Pamela was standing and writing on the table while Ngozi had her book on Pamela's back, she looked from Zara's book then wrote in hers.
"Tobi, have you done your mathematics assignment?" Audu, one of my classmates asks as I made my way to my seat.
"The one on circle geometry?" I halted to ask.
"Yes." He answers nodding vigorously.
"I've done it." I told him then carried on walking to my seat, Audu on my trail. I dropped my bag gently on my chair before sitting.
"Please, can I have your note. I want to copy the answers to the maths assignment. I have not done mine." Audu begs. I open my bag and hand him the notebook as soon as I see it after searching through the things in my bag.
He scurries to his seat with the note in his hands after uttering a quick, "Thank you."
Monday morning, the busiest for students. Monday morning for students are wontedly chaotic. Most mornings for students were for copying answers to assignments which were given to us. This was to avoid being punished or whipped. That alone is chaotic.
Minutes later, Zara announces, "I'm finally done." Some ask for her note so they could copy from it and she gives them.
"Thunder fire mathematics!" Zara mutters as she plops on Anna's chair that's next to mine. I chortle due to her words and rest my elbows on the table.
"I called you throughout the weekend, you didn't answer any of my calls. May I know the reason for that?"
"My phone was dead." The lie rolled of my tongue smoothly.
"Where were you and Daniel on Friday? You left the whole class to do the cleaning after the party."
I shifted uncomfortably. I wasn't excited to hear his name. The bell for assembly was rung making me avoid answering the question which I was thankful for. We made our way to the assembly ground and assembled in our respective lines.
The assembly went by very fast, the day was also going by fast as we were already in the period before lunch break. This, I'm very pleased about.
Mrs Iboro's voice pulled me out of my reverie. Her voice was the only voice being heard as the whole class was quiet as she expounded on the topic she's teaching.
"Another way of preventing pregnancies apart from family planning is through the use of condoms. Condoms are readily available everywhere. They're very cheap and one of the cheapest ways to prevent pregnancies. It's not very reliable since condoms can cut during sex. The best and most reliable method to prevent pregnancies is abstinence. It's also the best way for youths to prevent unwanted pregnancies." Mrs Iboro continued to explain.
School had been going fine, I had even forgotten about what happened last week Friday then Mrs Iboro walked into the class to mock my plight by teaching us the topic Family Planning.
She should have thought us about this last week, maybe, just maybe I wouldn't have had sex with Daniel. I've been avoiding him like a plague. He understood I didn't want to see him and he didn't disturb me any longer.
Everyone in the class is making fun of us saying; There's trouble in paradise. Paradise kill them there!
"Stay away from sex, it's not for your age..." Mrs Iboro begins to ramble making us let out groans, hisses or scrunch our faces in displeasure.
"This one has started. We won't hear the end of it. Such talks should be given to Okirika and Pauline privately. They are the only ones I know open their legs for guys. Ordinary Pepsi dey don off pant." Anna whispers to me.
I nod in response not knowing what to say.
"I can't wait to see which one of them would get pregnant first. They'll be the laughing stock of the school for months."
"Abstain from all forms of sexual practices. Girls, don't listen to what these boys have to say. Sex shouldn't be your priority." Our biology teacher begins to pep talk us. She stops for a moment giving me a queer look making me somewhat uncomfortable.
"Tobi, see me after the class." She announces and I nod nervously.
Why does she want to see me? Does she know anything? Was she told anything about Daniel and I?
My mind was far away during the class. Mrs Iboro kept on explaining how to prevent unwanted pregnancies and family planning. I kept checking the time hoping the class would rap up soon but every second seem to be like an hour.
After what seemed like a hundred years the bell was finally rung vindicating me from the uncomfortable topic she chose for the class.
"Have a lovely day." She packs her books and takes her whiteboard marker before making her way out. I followed her suspense talking over me. I was so eager to know what she wanted to tell me.
"Ma, you asked to see you after the class."
She hums, "yes I did. It's break time right?"
I nod, "yes ma."
"Alright; follow me." She gives her huge textbook to me to carry as we both went to her office.
She walks up the stair which leads to the lab where her office is. She took slow and gentle steps making me impatient but I said nothing, I simply followed her trail.
"Mrs Iboro, alert don enter o." The male biology teacher who teaches the SS3 class tells her as we enter the office.
I genuflect greeting the teacher, Mr Raymond and he waves at me.
"Thank God! When I didn't see it yesterday I thought it was going to take weeks before they paid us." She told him as she sat on her seat.
I dropped the books carefully on her table and began to observe the laboratory while she and Mr Raymond engaged in a conversation.
The laboratory is painted blue with two rectangular tables with inbuilt sinks in them. There were cabinets on the wall which the laboratory equipments are stored. The whiteboard was placed at the end of the laboratory and the words practical biology were written with black marker on it. Probably the last thing taught here.
The projector was also set like it had been used. There was a laptop on a stool and on the projector's screen was a picture of vegetables and their names was in display.
There were stools for students to sit placed in front of the rectangular tables. Mrs Iboro and Mr Raymond's desk were on the other end of the lab. A shelve which holds different specimens in jars was the only thing separating the teachers desk. I could notice, snakes, lizards, frogs in jars with liquids in them.
A human skeletal frame which is one of the teaching aids stood with the help of a pole next to the window beside Mrs Iboro. Charts of the muscular system, cells, reproductive system, the human heart and many more were hung on the wall.
"My dear, sit on one of those stools." She tells me and I do as she orders.
A junior student passes by and Mrs Iboro calls for her. "Go to SS2 emerald, call me Ugwu." She orders. "Tell him to come here right away." The girl nods and leaves the laboratory.
I knew right away the Ugwu she requested for was Daniel. One question kept ringing in my head, why would Mrs Iboro want to see Daniel and I?
