The darkness that covered her eyes was gone, in its place was a bright light that shone straight into them the moment her eyelids opened.

They closed instantly, the quick effect of the light penetrating in them almost made her blind.

After a few seconds, she carefully opened her eyes again.

'Where am I?'

This was the first question that popped into her mind.

Her eyes danced around checking for answers, but she was just met with white walls and bright lights. Everything seemed so foreign to her.

'What's going on?'

She tried to move her body, but she couldn't. Every part of her was stiff, even her head. The only part of her body that moved voluntarily were her eyeballs, which were frantically looking.

Trickles of sweat surfaced on her face instantly when she panicked.

'What's going on? Where am I? How did I get here?'

These questions flooded her racing mind. Her eyes were still darting around, searching for clues.

A loud sound from a machine by her side penetrated her ears, followed by her racing heartbeats.

Her entire body was trembling. She became scared, no matter how she tried to come up with a reason for everything that was suddenly happening, nothing came up. She remembered nothing.

She heard feet shuffling towards her, and a blurry figure came into her line of vision. Her eyes took in the caramel, straight flowing hair of the figure; a female. Her mind registered, but that didn't calm her racing heart.

She didn't register any familiarity with the female in question.

'Something's wrong. Where am I? Who is this person? Who am I?'

As the last question popped into her mind, her eyes widened and her heartbeat increased at an even faster pace.

Her breaths went in and out as she began hyperventilating. A sense of dread chilling her bones to the very core.

The figure above her head became blurry, tears built up in her eyes falling down.

'Who am I? Why don't I remember who I am?'

She tried to move her hands to her aching head, but they wouldn't budge. Panting, she felt like she was choking. There wasn't enough air any more. Her body was shaking frantically.

Another loud sound louder than the heart monitor cried out. An alarm. People rushed into the room immediately, but she couldn't focus on that. The pain in her head was increasing at a fast rate.

'More people? Where am I?'

Another figure came up to her blurred peripheral vision. The figure held an injection and immediately inserted it into a drip by the side of the bed.

Drowsiness took over her thinking. Every thought raced through her mind disappeared, one after the other. She tried to hold on to the thoughts, but they slipped away. Darkness soon took over her vision, covering the light all over again.

The knock on the door of his office grabbed his attention. He rose his head towards the door and ran his hand through his brown sugar combed-over hair, frustrated at what he had to do the moment the door opened to reveal Nurse Petra Wilson.

She stood there in her nurse outfit looking a little timid, her caramel straight hair packed in a ponytail with her smokey-grey catlike eyes cast downwards, unusual for her.

"You called for me, Doctor Lincoln?" she said and looked up at him a bit, flashing her long lashes.

His obsidian close-set eyes narrowed at her innocent look. "Care to explain what happened?" he snapped.

He was pissed at her nonchalant attitude in the patient's room earlier. A lot of things could have gone wrong if she hadn't pressed the alarm then. That shouldn't have happened, and as the head nurse of the hospital, he was quite disappointed she had let that happen.

Her head snapped up fully at the harsh tone of his voice. "She woke up?" Petra responded, her cheery high pitched voice tuned down a bit.

"Nurse Wilson!" Kian growled at her.

Petra sighed at the tone of his voice. "She woke up, didn't she?"

"Don't play smart with me, Nurse Wilson! What on earth happened in there!? Why didn't you press the alarm button the moment you realized she was awake? You know what could have happened, don't you!?" His fist hit the table, and he fixed her with a glare.

Petra breathed in to calm herself down. "I'm sorry. I was there watching her and just talking as I regularly do," she explained, looking him in the eye calmly, "I kind of slept off, then I woke up to the sound of her ECG. I realised she was awake, and I was excited. The first thing that came to my mind was the fact that she had finally woken up. I rushed to her side expressing my excitement, but I realised she wasn't even registering what I was saying. Instead, she was shaking frantically. That was why I pressed the alarm button in haste."

"And it didn't occur to you to press the button the moment you knew she was awake?" he asked her, his fist still closed tightly.

"I was just excited. You know how long I've waited for her to wake up and..." she paused, noticing the change in Kian's posture.

Kian released his fist and closed his eyes to calm himself down. He understood her reason, but her emotional entanglement with the job could have cost him the patient's life.

He opened his eyes to see a small smile on Petra's cupid's bow-shaped lips, his gaze switched from calm to serious in an instant. "I understand your sentiments Nurse Wilson and for that reason, I must change her head nurse from you to another person."

The smile on her lips dropped at a rapid speed, her eyes opened wide in shock. "You can't do that."

"I can and I'm doing just that," he responded and to further buttress his point, he picked up his pen to write a statement.

"Kian Ambrose Lincoln, don't you dare!" Petra shouted.

Kian's hand halted from writing, he moved his gaze from the piece of paper to face Petra with a glare. "Nurse Wilson!" he growled out with a warning and a hard gaze.

"Don't Nurse Wilson me, Kian." Petra barked out. She stomped towards his desk and slammed her fist on it glaring at him, "How could you want to change me when I have waited 5 years for this?! Do you think you are the only one who cares for the patient's well-being, Dr Lincoln!?"

"It didn't seem to be that way this time, Petra," he snarled giving her a glare of his own.

They both stayed like that, glaring at each other and waiting for the first person to back down.

Kian didn't budge, Petra knew she was close to a defeat and hence slacked into one chair opposite Kian's table in a loud puff. She folded her hands over her chest, pouting a bit, her face turned away from Kian's.

A smirk slowly formed on Kian's lips, but he wiped it off as soon as Petra's defeated look found his.

"I'm sorry, okay?" she said in defeat, "It was very unprofessional of me not to call in for help immediately I saw she was awake. I admit, okay? Just please don't change me?" she tried to persuade him with her sheepish smile, "For the sake of our beautiful friendship here?"

"We are not friends."

Petra's right hand flew to her mouth as she gasped falsely. "But..."

"You are just my best friend's younger sister."

She dropped her hand and gave him a ridiculous look. "Same old, same old Kian. All I hear is friend. Come on, please?"

Kian's gaze shifted away from her. Hating himself for understanding her.

"I promise it won't happen again. I'll be professional all the way," she further added singing the last part.

Kian sent her a light glare, which made Petra grin. She knew he was going to let her be, "Fine but..."

"Yes!" she shouted and raised her hands up in the air, "Thank you!"

Kian shook his head at her. He trusted her to do her job well, he just worried that her emotional entanglement with that patient was going to be a hindrance. He chose to keep an eye on her closely.

He turned to the medical charts of the patient on the table putting aside the topic, "Normal patients who wake up from coma don't go into panic modes like that. Do you know what happened?" He asked her.

Petra stared at the wall beside Kian. She drummed her fingertips on the table in thought, "Hmm, true. First, where she was would be unclear, but most of them figure it out after a little while."

"But if she didn't remember and thus became scared because of that..."

"We might deal with an amnesia case here," Petra completed. She shifted to stare straight up at the ceiling, focused.

"But we can't really know for sure until she wakes up again. She had a huge gash on her head when she came in."

"Barely survived," Petra mumbled as she remembered the incident like it was the previous day.

"Yeah. So hitting her head could have caused an injury to her temporal lobe or it can just be something mild."

Petra groaned and faced Kian. "I really hope it's the latter," she said.

A small smile cracked at Kian's lips, "I can't seem to determine whether you wish it's the latter because you are such a lazy nurse and you don't want any stress or because you are excited that your patient is finally awake and you sincerely don't want her to go through any stress."

"Of course, it's because I'm excited. What else would it be? I just pray her conscious self is as loving to talk to as her unconscious self. I don't want to not have a friend in this hospital again. It's lonely."

Kian's brow arched upward at her statement in disbelief, "And since when has your workplace been a place to go around and make friends?"

"Every day Kian. This hospital can be suffocating especially with you stuck up doctors being a pain in the behind."

"Really?"

Petra's eyes widened the moment her words settled in. She laughed nervously and stood up from her seat like the chair burned. "Well, I mean your workplace is definitely not a place for making friends at all. Em, I've got to go. You know, busy nurse and all." she said and hurried off to the door.

But before she stepped out, she turned back to give him a two-fingered salute, "Goodbye, Doctor Lincoln."

Kian shook his head after she left. He casually turned away from the door. He glimpsed at the medical chart again. His posture turned serious as his mind wandered back to the amount of fear that he saw in the cocoa brown eyes of the patient they had put to sleep. He wondered what to expect the next time she would wake up.
