The Reaping
I wake up to the sound of chickens outside. I peer into my window and see my cows, chickens, and, pigs. If any capitol person were to come here, they'd know it was District 10. There are farms like this at least every five miles. The 'wretched' smell lingers everywhere and probably into the other surrounding Districts as well. 'Wretched' is the word our announcer, Neolie uses to describe it. But to me, it only smells like 'home'.
I get up finally and let my curly brown hair flow down. I step into a royal blue dress. I feel like a princess! I twirl around not noticing my big brother, Nicolas coming into my room.
"Hey, Kate." he says.
I jumped.
"Hi Nick! I didn't see you there." I say with a giggle.
"Have you ate today?" Nick asks.
"Not yet." I say.
"How 'bout I make you some scrambled eggs?" He says with a smile.
I nod my head.
"But, before I can do that there's one thing I need to give you first. Close your eyes and hold out your hands."
I did as he said.
"Okay. You can open them now!" He says.
I look in my hands. It was a locket. My mothers locket. I felt a tear roll down my cheek.
"She wanted you to have it." Nick whispers.
I think of my dead mother and father. I don't remember my father, he died when I was two from an unknown virus. My mother died when I was four from childbirth. My little sister, Ava didn't make it either.
From then on it was Nick and I against the world.
After about 30 minutes, I had already ate and had gotten fully ready. Nick walked me to the town hall and waited where the adults stood. I waited for the reaping to begin. Man this took forever.
"Welcome Ladies and gentleman to the district 10 reaping! As always ladies first!"
I held my breath.
"Kate Becker!" The district 10 annocer yelled.
Everyone looked at me. I tried to get out of being noticed by 'looking for the tribute' as well but, it was no use. I walked up to the stage. I looked at Nick who was crying.
I met his gaze.
"Don't worry about me. I'll see you in three weeks." I whispered.
He read my lips and nodded.
I wasn't lying. He really would see me in three weeks. But it was a matter of if I was alive or in my grave.
