Thirty-nine
"We're going on a trip in our favorite rocket ship, Zooming through the sky, Little Einst-,"
"You're a cool lad, Caesar and I have absolutely nothing against you," Harry interrupted and I swiveled around from my spot in the passenger seat to see Harry glowering at Caesar who currently sat next to him in the middle seat. Liam lifted his head that was previously pressed up against the window to look at Harry as well. "But I swear to god, if you don't stop fucking singing that song I will beat the shit out of you."
Caesar frowned and then scoffed, leaning back against the seat and crossing his arms. "Well Shit, its not my fault Lila's radio is broken. And you bunch don't feel like talking either."
"How do you know that song anyways?" Lila asked in amusement, cocking her eyebrow as she glanced at Caesar in the rear view mirror. Caesar paused, shifting uncomfortably and narrowing his eyes.
"When you're on house arrest for as long as I was, you get bored with the same shit always on TV. So I decided to do a little channel exploring. Turns out The Little Einsteins is a great show to watch when you're high."
Despite the fact I had already explained to Liam awhile ago that Caesar was a good guy even though he was part of Harry's and my 'kidnapping', Liam still got awkward any time Caesar mentioned it. The fact that I repeatedly told him Caesar took a bullet for me was probably the only reason Liam managed to tolerate him but he still tenses up. Just like he was now at the reminder of his house arrest.
"I can't believe you risked getting high when you were under house arrest," I said, trying to lighten the mood as I stifled a laugh and shook my head. "Didn't you have a parol officer constantly checking up on you?"
He grinned. "Yeah. I just told him we had skunks around our house any time he mentioned the stank."
"And he bought it?" Liam asked, his shoulders losing the tenseness as his mouth twitched into a smile.
"Yeah. I'm convinced he knew the truth though, just didn't care enough to report me for it." He shrugged and sighed tiredly. "Carajo, I miss weed."
Harry furrowed his eyebrows confusedly then looked to me with questioning eyes. "Means fuck or shit." I translated and he nodded. I looked to the dashboard to see we had only been driving for forty five minutes and sighed in exasperation. We still had another twenty minutes or so until we arrived into our home town.
Liam clearing his throat to catch my attention, drew my gaze back to the rear view mirror where I could see him staring at me. I raised my eyebrows and turned around in my seat to meet his stare full on. "What?"
He hesitated them cleared his throat again awkwardly. "So uh, my mom texted me and told me your dad isn't coming to Thanksgiving."
Immediately, I tensed at the mention of him and felt my face lose all emotion. "What?"
"Your dad isn't coming to my mom's for Thanksgiving."
I blinked and then furrowed my eyebrows confusedly. My dad always went to my aunts for the holidays, why wouldn't he go this year? "Did he tell her that?"
"Yeah. He told her he wasn't going to be coming this year and I had told her you weren't going to come because, well you didn't want to see him. So when he told her he wasn't gonna show up she told me so I could tell you." He paused and pressed his lips together. "Mom is hoping that now that he isn't going to come, you will change your mind and join us after all."
I opened my mouth to respond but paused and glanced at Harry, who was watching us with mere interest. "I told Harry I'd spend it with him and his family."
"Em," he chimed in and gave me a soft smile. "It's okay, you should spend it with them."
I frowned. "But I wanted to spend it with you." I nearly whined like a child and he bit down on his lip.
"Why don't you do both," Liam said quickly. "Come for dinner, you know we don't start eating until late anyways."
"That's not a bad idea." Harry said and turned to look back at me. "We usually start eating around lunch time. You can spend it with my family during that time and then go to your aunts for dinner?"
I thought it over with pursed lips, glancing between both Liam and Harry. "I'll go only if you come with me?" I tell Harry and he looks over at Liam.
"Is that okay with your mum?"
He shrugged and ran his hand over his grown out short hair. "Yeah, I don't think she'd mind."
Harry paused and looked down at his hands for a moment, twisting one of the rings around his finger before nodding and glancing up at me. "Okay then yeah. I'll come with you."
I smiled and my shoulders fell with relief as I leaned back against my seat. "Okay then, tell auntie Karen I'll be there then." I called back and Liam mumbled something incoherently before the car fell back into a stretched out silence, the only thing being heard is the low sound of the rumbling engine. I tilted my head to the side to stare at the trees that swished quickly passed the window, eyes flickering up to the late afternoon sky.
"This drive would probably go faster if we had music," Caesar complained, drawing my attention back to him to see him resting his elbows on his knees before placing his chin on top of his fists. "Let's play a game."
"If you suggest 'I spy' we're going to have a problem." Harry warned and Caesar rolled his eyes.
"Nah. I was thinking truth or dare, or maybe never have I ever."
"We can't exactly do any dares in an enclosed vehicle. Plus, I'm driving." Lila chimed in.
"And those games are so junior high." Liam snorted and Caesar sent him a glare.
"You got any other ideas?"
When Liam didn't answer Caesar grinned and nodded. "That's what I thought. So never have I ever it is. I'll go first! Never have I ever blown Harry."
I gasped while Lila bursted into laughter and Liam grimaced, groaning right after while shaking his head vigorously. "Do not fucking put a finger down Ems, I don't wanna know."
I blushed profusely and took a peek at Harry to see him smirking smugly. His arms crossed and a dark glint in his eye as he glanced at me. I pressed my lips together to suppress a grin and looked away, shaking my head.
"One finger down Chica." Caesar sung and Liam's face twisted in disgust, his elbow driving into Caesar's ribs moments later.
"We are not talking about my cousin's sex life, not while I'm in the car." Liam declared and I could see the evil smile growing on Lila's lips that it looked almost creepy. Her posture straightened in her seat as she held the steering wheel with both hands and glanced in the rear view mirror at Liam.
"Hey, Harry? How does Em's pussy taste?"
My mouth dropped and an inhuman screech came out before I slapped Lila's arm. Caesar cackled like a witch along with Lila and Liam cursed loudly, his hand flying to the handle of the car where he tried to open it, yet to no avail. It was on child lock. "I'll throw myself out of the car! I'll do it!"
Lila continued to laugh and I slid down in my seat to hide my red face as I shook my head. Lila was so vulgar. She had no limits. "You can't, it's on child lock!" She sang and Liam groaned behind me. Caesar was still laughing but after a few moments, it died down and the car began to fall into an awkward silence.
"Hey Lila?" Harry said after a long moment.
"Yeah?"
I looked over my shoulder at him just in time to catch him smirking at me deviously. "Sweet. She tastes sweet."
Liam threw himself over Caesar's lap and reached for Harry's neck.

"Is it still red?" Harry groaned as I waved at Lila, watching her pull away from the curb of Harry's house. Once she waved back and drove further down his street, I finally faced Harry to see the handprint on his cheek received from Liam still visible. It was red earlier but had faded to a light pink now but the sight of it still made my mouth twitch into a smile.
"It's pink now," I told him and smirked when he frowned. "You totally deserved that. Shouldn't have said something like that in front of Liam, or any of them for that matter."
"I was just pullin' his leg." He muttered guiltily and winced when he lightly touched his cheek. "Bad idea I guess."
"Yeah, very bad. Hopefully you learned your lesson." I told him, arching my eyebrow as I hitched the strap of my bag higher on my shoulder. "Now we should probably go inside. I bet your mom is standing at the window just staring at us."
He glanced back at the house, eyes flickering to the windows with curtains. I could of sworn one of them had just moved. "Yeah I wouldn't put it past her," he muttered and then sighed. "Okay let's go."
He lead me up the pathway of his house, his strides long and the yellow button up hitched higher on his back. His black boxers were visible above his jeans and I reached forward to tug his shirt down, a smile being sent to me over his shoulder. We reached the steps of the porch moments later and before Harry could even pull out his house keys, the door swung open. The knob bounced off the wall with a thud and my eyes widened as Anne beamed at us from the doorway before throwing her arms around her son.
"My baby!" She squealed and tightened her arms around his neck while Harry's own arms hung loosely at his sides. She pulled back and gave him a scolding look. "Hug me back, boy."
Harry chuckled and drew his mom in again, wrapping his arms around her shoulders and squeezing her tightly. "Hi mum."
She hugged him a few seconds longer than pulled back again, holding him at arms length. "Your hair grew."
"It did."
"Thank heavens! I missed your Rapunzel hair."
"It's only to my ears, mum."
She patted his shoulder. "It'll get there." Releasing him, she lightly shoved him aside. "Now move. I've got to say hi to your beautiful girl here." She held her arms open and moved towards me, a wide smile on her face that I couldn't help but return. I laughed just as she wrapped me into an equally tight hug, the smell of peppermint instantly hitting my nostrils.
"Hi Anne."
"Hello honey." She squeezed me once more than stepped back, her hand running over my hair in a motherly way. "How are you love? It's so good to see you again."
"I'm good, thank you so much for letting me come. I hope I'm not intruding..." I said a little shyly and she instantly shook her head, putting her arm around my shoulder to lead me inside.
"Hush, of course you aren't. You're always welcomed here sweetheart." She assured me, pulling the bag on my shoulder off and thrusting it to Harry. "Take her things to your room. Why was she carrying it in the first place? Where are your manners?" She scolded him and I stifled a laugh, biting my lip as Harry stared at her in bewilderment.
"I have manners!" He screeched and looked at me. "Em, tell her I have manners."
"He doesn't." I said flatly just to tease him and his mouth dropped.
"Harry," she snapped and looked at him with squinting eyes. "I thought I told you to be a gentleman to her. Do I need to whoop your bum?"
"Anne I'm only joking." I quickly said in Harry's defense and laughed when she widened her eyes. "He treats me well."
"Oh well good. He better." She threatened and then placed her hand on my arm. "Now, come with me to the kitchen. There's someone here eager to meet you."
For a brief second I'm confused but then remember that Harry mentioned his sister had flown in from England. It must be her in the kitchen, and with this knowledge my veins begin to flood with nervousness. My feet stay planted where they are on the floor when Anne tries to tug me along with her and she glances at me with curiosity. "I actually need to use the restroom first." I lie to her and she nods, releasing my arm and smiling at me.
"Okay, I'm sure you remember where it is but if not Harry will lead you." I nod in response and she gives us both a quick smile before turning and heading into the kitchen. Pivoting on my heel, I follow Harry down the hallway that leads to his room and walk right inside behind him. Shutting the door once we're both in, I lean my back against it and briefly am reminded with what had happened here the last time I had stood in this position.
"Thought you needed to piss?" Harry asks as he sets our bags on the floor near the window, looking over his shoulder at me with an arched eyebrow.
"I lied; I'm nervous. It's your sister in the kitchen isn't it?"
He sighed as he straightened, biting his lip and moving towards his bed where he fell face first. I raised my eyebrows and heard him grumble something that sounded like 'yeah it is' into the duvet. When he made no move to get up from his position, I walked across the room and laid on my stomach beside him. Holding myself up on my elbows, I looked down at him and lightly fingered the curls at the nape of his neck. Knowing he liked having his scalp rubbed, I itched my fingers into his hair and rubbed them over his head. Seconds later, he was groaning into the bed before he finally rolled onto his back. Green eyes were staring up at me and he blinked, eyelashes momentarily fluttering when I brushed the curls out of his face.
"Feels good when you do that." He mumbled and his chest rose and fell noticeably as he breathed in. "It's relaxing."
"That's why I did it." I smiled and then it fell when he didn't return it. "You're nervous to see your sister." I stated more than asked.
"Yes. Can't you tell? I'm lying here putting off seeing her as long as possible."
"You shouldn't, I'm sure she missed you." I tell him and trace the shape of his lips almost subconsciously. He gapes them open a little when I do and his eyes watch me carefully. "I can guarantee that it won't be awkward between you two."
"How do you know?"
"Because she's your sister. She's required to unconditionally love you," I tease and he pouts, lightly nudging my waist with his arm. "I'm kidding babe. I know because if I hadn't seen Liam for three years, all I'd care about is the fact I'm finally seeing him again. Not to mention she has you for a brother. You're amazing and she loves you; how can anyone not love you?" I tell him softly then immediately seal my mouth shut when I realize how that might have sounded to him. Fuck, right now was not the time to confess how I truly felt. Last thing I wanted was to freak him out and drive him away before we even reached Thanksgiving.
Expecting him to roll away from me, I'm surprised when he instead reaches up and tucks a strand of my hair behind my ear. My gaze that had fallen to the duvet the moment the words had left my mouth, flicker up to meet his and I find him staring at me with such admiration. It makes my chest tighten.
"You're so fucking beautiful and amazing." He says softly and voice thick with emotion. "I'm unbelievably lucky to have you."
Not having anything that would properly display how I felt about him, I merely smile and lean down to press my lips to his. His mouth is warm against mine and he tastes like cinnamon and mint. Gently, I suck on his bottom lip and he moans so quietly I almost don't hear it. I smile into the kiss and before it can heat up, I pull away and look down at him with love. "I'm lucky to have you too."
He smiles once more than sighs, moving to sit up and I mirror his actions. "I guess we should go out then."
"You'll be okay, I'm here if you need me." I reassure him and he grabs my hand, squeezing it before standing up and pulling me off the bed. We walk out of the room and down the hallway, hearing laughter the closer we got. I stared at Harry's rigid back just before we rounded the corner to enter the kitchen and nearly ran into him when he came to a sudden halt. His grip on my hand tightened and I looked at the back of his head, then stepped out from behind him to see what he was staring at.
There, with her hands laying flatly over the counter, blonde hair stopping just at her shoulders and eyes that were an exact replica of Harry's, stood a girl that I could only assume was his sister. Her mouth was slightly open and her eyes were widened as she stared at Harry but I noticed they were quickly becoming glassy. "Harry." She finally choked out and when her mouth quivered, I noticed the indent in her cheeks. Her hand flew over her mouth and she quickly rounded the counter. I released Harry's hand when I saw her running towards him and he instantly reacted. He met her half way and I watched with a full heart as the two of them embraced, Harry's chin tucking against her shoulder as hers struggled to reach his own due to his height. I could see tears leaking from the corner of her eyes and her hands splayed out over the top of his back where she moved them in circles. "Oh my god you're so tall." She cried and held his shoulders. "And you have muscle, what the fuck?" She cried more. "Last time I saw you, you were just a tiny pip-squeak. All skinny and no muscle." She waled and closed her eyes. "My baby brother."
I felt a ball forming at the back of my throat, feeling suddenly emotional watching their reunion. It was clear how much love Harry's family had for him and how much he had for them that it only shined a light on how little love had been given in my own household. It was the way his mom looked at her two kids and the way Harry's sister held him that made me feel my heart fill with adoration while simultaneously breaking. Because my family would never have this.
It was only when Harry pulled back from the hug did I notice that he too had shed a few tears. His eyes were glossy and there was wetness gathered beneath his eyes but he was quick to wipe it away. He laughed a little as he stared at his sister. "Gem," he sighed. "I'm so glad you're here."
"Me too. I missed you." She gave him another hug before stepping away entirely, properly looking at him this time. "Christ, you're like a man now. Aren't you like sixteen?"
He rolled his eyes. "Eighteen, and nineteen in like two months." He told her and smiled. "And what are you? Like thirty?" He asked and grasped a strand of her hair. "Is that gray hair I see?"
She slapped his hand away and her face lost its humor, eyes so similar to Harry's glaring up at him. "I'm twenty-one, you wanker. I'm not old."
"Huh, could of fooled me." He joked and she smacked his arm while he laughed, ruffling the top of her hair. "I'm kidding. Though it seems people might think I'm the older sibling now. You're so little."
"Can't argue there." She grinned and sighed, her gaze finally landing on me and I instantly straightened. Her eyes grew a little wide and a smile began to form on her lips. "And I'm going to take a wild guess that you're Emmeline."
"Yeah that's me." I told her and smiled, giving her an awkward wave. "Hi."
"Hi." She laughed and moved away from Harry to walk towards me. I began to reach my hand out to shake hers but it hung awkwardly to the side when she drew me into a quick hug instead. "Harry has told me so much about you."
"Good things I hope."
"Course, I'm a hardcore feminist. I'm all about girls defending girls. Brother or not, if he ever spoke bad about you I'd kick his arse." She told me and smiled, eyes flickering over my face. "You're gorgeous."
I blushed but before I could answer, Harry walked up and slung an arm around my shoulder protectively. "Okay Gem, don't even think about it."
"What?" She asked innocently, holding her hands up in surrender. "I was just complimenting her."
"More like hitting on her."
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and looked between Harry and Gemma. Why would she...? "Oh," realization filled me and I looked at her unsurely. "Are you...?"
"Lesbian? No. Bisexual? Yes." She smirked and it was scary how identical it was to Harry's. "I did the whole experimenting thing in my first year at Uni, turns out I like girls just as much as I like boys."
"Oh, well that's cool." I said, unsure what the right thing was to say here. "Do you have a girlfriend or boyfriend?"
"No. Why? You interested?" She asked with a mischievous smile and Harry scoffed beside me. She wiggled her eyebrows and I immediately felt my nerves falling away as I let out a loud laugh.
"Sorry, I'm taken." I nudged Harry and she chuckled.
"Shame." She sighed and looked at Harry with teasing eyes. "Don't fuck it up baby brother."
"Mum! Tell her to stop!" Harry whined like a child and Anne laughed, the sound of it echoing around the kitchen. She was at the stove, something that smelled like well cooked meat filling my nostrils.
"Gem, stop teasing your brother."
"Who said anything about teasing? I'm being serious." She said and sent me a wink blatantly in front of Harry, to which he growled like an animal at her for. She cackled and pivoted on her foot, waving her hand around above her head. "Down boy. She's all yours."
"For now, anyways." Anne joked and nudged Gemma when she went to stand next to her. "If he messes things up with her, I want you to date her. I like her too much not to see her part of this family."
And though Gemma laughed and Harry whined more about how I was his, my chest was tightening with so much love. Harry's mom that I hadn't known for that long and his sister I just met, were showing more care towards me than my own parents had in years. It meant so much to me and in that moment I knew they were people I wanted in my life for a long time. I wanted to be part of their family just as much as his mom wanted me to. Looking at Harry, at the way he smiled widely and the crinkles that formed in the corner of his eyes as he laughed at something his mom said, I knew that most of all, I wanted to with him. For as long as the universe, fate, destiny, God-, whatever high being there was, would allow me to.
