Nine
Harry: I've just walked into the kitchen. She's eating my boxed macaroni now. I'm angry.
Me: Damn. Should have taken that too along with your cereal.
Harry: I'm convinced I might have to start cleaning out my food cabinet every time Brad has one of his victims over.
Me: And how often is that?
Harry: Last week he had six different girls over. Two of them were on the same day.
Me: Ah, you'd be going back and forth between the kitchen and your room way too much.
Harry: Maybe I should invest in a mini fridge?
Me: Where would you put it?
Harry: The corner of my room? I have no idea.
Me: Liam keeps his in his closet.
Harry: That's an odd place. Why?
Me: He says it doesn't take up as much room. Plus it's out of sight from any of his roommates. They like to steal from his candy stash.
Harry: I think I might do that. Want to come mini fridge shopping with me soon? It could be cute.
Me: Yes, because comparing the prices between small fridges is so cute.
Harry: More than cute. Adorable. Come with me?
I smile at my screen, biting my lip as I type out my answer.
Me: Fine. But I get an all access pass to whatever you put in that fridge.
Harry: What's mine is yours baby. ;)
I make a weird inhuman noise after reading his text and it draws the attention of Lila and Morgan. I blush furiously and lock my phone, not bothering to respond to him before shoving my phone between my legs. I look towards the TV screen, hoping they won't say anything about seeing me on my phone but I know it's useless when I can feel them both still watching me.
"You finally decided to join us in watching the movie?" Lila says with an arch of her eyebrow and I look at her with my cheeks burning profusely.
"I was watching it." I mumble and Morgan rolls her eyes with a grin, shaking her head while popping a piece of popcorn in her mouth.
"Emma and Liv are already about to get married and you got on your phone just before Feltcher proposed to Emma. You have not been watching it." Lila points out and I frown, glancing towards the TV to see Emma tackling Liv to the ground in the middle of her walking down the aisle. Damn, I did miss most of the movie.
"Well..." I start, thinking of an excuse but I know it's no use when both of my friends give me pointed looks. "Alright fine you caught me. I suck."
"You don't suck. You're just in love." Morgan chides and my eyes widen while Lila nods with a smile.
"I'm not..." I shake my head, feeling my cheeks reddening more than they already were before huffing. "I'm allowed to text my friend."
"Friend, yeah okay." Lila teases. "You've been smiling down at your phone for god knows how long and making girly noises. I don't care what you say about whatever you two are to each other, but you don't giggle like that for a friend. Especially when it happens to be the same guy you hooked up with last night."
"Agreed." Morgan says, her gaze on the TV while she holds her palm up for Lila to high five. She does easily and pops another piece of popcorn into her mouth, sending me an amused grin when I don't say anything back.
"Whatever. I'm not going to talk to him anymore for the night." I say to them, folding my arms over my chest. I physically had to make sure I didn't reach for my phone because if they knew just how much I was itching to respond to him, they'd never let me live it down.
"Why not? No one's stopping you. If you want to talk to him, go ahead. We're just saying, we're your best friends and you're not fooling us." Morgan says and I press my lips together as I stare back at the screen. Liv just got married and it's now on the reception scene where Emma is dancing with Liv's brother. I sigh, leaning my elbow on top of the couch as I cup my chin in the palm of my hand. My gaze kept flickering down to my phone between my legs and I'm inwardly cursing myself for bringing it out here in the first place. I told myself I was only going to text him if the movie was boring but the moment I sat on the couch, it wasn't long before I was sending him another text and starting up a conversation with him. We had been texting back and forth ever since, and I momentarily wonder how long we had been talking non-stop for. I could always check the time receipts on the conversation...And I would. Later.
Just when the movie is now on the last scene, I hear the front door open. Heavy footsteps sound down the hallway and I turn my head in time to see Liam stepping through the threshold with three pizza boxes in hand and Andy following in tow. He's caring a Coca Cola liter and a plastic bag that I can see is holding Oreo flavored ice cream.
"You got me my favorite ice cream?" I ask in excitement, looking up at Andy just as he's passing the back of the couch. He flicks my forehead, sending me and smile with a shake of his head.
"Your cousin did. I can't take the credit." He says just before walking into the kitchen and I look up at Liam as he sinks down into the couch next to me, putting the pizza boxes on the coffee table.
"You got me ice cream?" I ask, arching my eyebrow at Liam when he looks at me. "Why did you do something nice? What do you want?"
He turns to stare at me with a disgruntled look, reaching for the plastic plates when Andy comes back and hands them to Liam. "Who says I want anything? I can't be nice to my cousin with out reason?"
I stare at him while he opens the top box, pulling a piece out and dropping it onto his plate. His lips are in a slight pout and his eyebrows are drawn together in annoyance that I can see he's being completely serious. Then it dawns on me. "Are you still sensitive over our heart to heart?" I ask him softly, a smile pulling at my lips when he grunts and ignores me. He totally is.
"I didn't know this was going to be a boys and girl hangout." Lila says from the other side of the couch when Andy sits on the love seat.
"I did say I was coming by." Liam tells her with confusion and she waves him off with a flick of her wrist.
"You're always here whether there's other boys around or not so you don't count as one of the guys."
Liam scoffs while I cough to disguise my laughter, earning a glare from Liam when he hears it. "Well you don't count as one of the girls."
"Was that supposed to be insulting? Because it wasn't."
Liam ignores her, rolling his eyes and taking a bite from his pizza. His gaze flickers up to the tv, watching the credits roll as he furrows his eyebrows together in thought. "What were you watching?"
"Bride Wars," Morgan responds but then her eyes dart to me in mischief. "Well, Lila and I were watching. Ems was too busy texting her boo to join us."
I send a glare to Morgan and Lila who are grinning, my cheeks burning tremendously when I see both Andy and Liam staring at me with raised eyebrows. "Her boo? Ems, you finally got yourself a boyfriend?" Andy asks with a smirk and I shake my head immediately.
"Er, no. It's not like that, we're just friends."
Liam rolls his eyes at my words, finishing chewing before finally responding. "Who was it? Harry?"
"Duh." Lila says. "She would not stop smiling down at her phone. It was sickening."
This time Liam smirks at the news and glances at me in amusement. "You're so screwed." He laughed and I punched him in the arm, to which he didn't even flinch or react. He simply took another bite out of his pizza while I leaned back on the sofa, pulling my phone out from between my legs. Flipping it around in my palm and debating whether to respond to him yet. Had it been long enough?
"What's he doing tonight?" Andy asks.
"Who?"
"This guy Harry."
"Um, I don't know actually." I shrug. "We didn't talk about it. He mentioned he was home not that long ago."
"Invite him over." Liam says and my mouth parts in surprise when he doesn't even bat an eyelash.
"But we're hanging out." I gesture to everyone and Andy rolls his eyes while Liam shakes his head.
"So what? He can hang with us. Let us get to know the guy." Andy says and Liam nods in agreement but I see a wicked smile gracing his face. He's up to something.
"I don't know..."
"Invite him, Ems. And when you do tell him he can bring Anthony with him." Lila says, winking and grinning mischievously. I roll my eyes, knowing she was only agreeing now because her and Anthony had really hit it off last night apparently.
"I'll ask, he might be busy though." I sigh, turning my phone over and unlocking the screen. It's already open to our conversation and after staring at the screen in thought as I wondered how to ask, I shrug and just decide to get to the point.
Me: What are you doing right now?
I waited, and a little over a minute later I saw the bubble pop up indicating that he was typing back.
Harry: Is this supposed to be a sext?
I breathe in through my nose, tilting my head back at the ceiling and silently begging to be given more patience. This boy. He was not taking me seriously.
Me: I could punch you. I'm serious, what are you doing right now?
Harry: I'm out at the moment. Why?
My shoulders slump in disappointment and I frown, sighing quietly as I type back to him with less enthusiasm.
Me: Oh, alright never mind then
Harry: Why did you ask?
Me: I'm here at my apartment with Lila, Morgan, Liam, and his roomie Andy. We're having a movie night with pizza and they mentioned I should invite you. But it's alright, you're busy. Maybe next time
I stared at the screen for a moment to wait for the bubble to pop up but after two minutes of nothing I locked my phone and placed it on my lap. I leaned back into the sofa, breathing out through my nose as I looked up and watched Lila and Morgan trying to show Liam and Andy the dance from the movie 'Something Borrowed.' My lips twitched in amusement when Morgan accidentally tripped Lila and Liam almost choked on his pizza when she face planted it on the floor with a loud thud.
"Oh my god!" Andy yelled, covering his mouth in horror with how quick she had fallen. He looked beyond worried but his mouth was twitching into a smile that I could tell he was trying so hard not to laugh at her. I was already grinning madly, too use to this by now to actually worry. She falls all the time and she gets right back up.
And she did just that, rolling on her side and hopping back on her feet with a groan. She rubbed her side and smacked Morgan's arm when she saw her laughing at her. "I'm fine, this happens too often. Don't worry."
I giggled quietly and a second later I felt a vibrate on my leg, looking down to see a notification popped up. I picked up my phone, immediately unlocking it when I saw Harry's name displayed on it.
Harry: I can always do my thing another time. I'll come. What time do you want me there?
My lips pulled into a wide grin after seeing his text and I hurriedly went to respond to him, my excitement growing at the fact I was going to see him again.
Me: You don't have to do that if your thing is important. But now, if you can? Everyone's already here
Harry: And pass up seeing your face? Not a chance. I'm coming.
Fuck.
Me: 😊 Lila wants you to bring Anthony. I think she might have a crush on him.
Harry: Lucky for her he's actually with me right now. I'll drag him along, though I don't think it will take much effort. He seems smitten with Lila too.
Me: Oh so many match-making possibilities. 😈
Harry: We should scheme.
Me: Got any ideas in mind?
Harry: Oh plenty. We'll talk strategies when I get there. I need to observe them.
Me: We're the next Blair Waldorf and Chuck Bass.
Harry: Who and who?
Me: Don't tell me you've never seen Gossip Girl.
Harry: Fine, I won't tell you then.
Me: You've never seen it have you?
Harry: Nope. But I'm going to take a wild guess it's about a girl who gossips.
Me: It's so much more than that. It's so good, scandalous, sexy and addicting. You have to watch it.
Harry: Maybe I will. I need to see who this Blair whatever and Bass lad is.
Me: I'll binge watch it with you, even though I've watched the whole series twice already.
Harry: Alright you've got me. I'll watch it.
"Look at her, she's smiling at her phone again. I told you it's disgusting."
I look up at the sound of Lila shit talking to see every single pair of eyes is on me, each of them grinning in amusement. I grow embarrassed and lay my phone in my lap, smiling up at them guiltily. "Sorry, were one of you talking to me?"
"We just wanted to know what Harry said?" Andy asked and I nodded.
"Right. He said he's coming. And he's bringing Anthony." I said and Lila's eyes widened and she looked down at her outfit, a gasp leaving her mouth seconds later.
"Shit! I need to change! I have to fix my face!" She screeched and booked it for her room, practically tripping over her own feet again. I watched her retreat in amusement but then glanced down at my own attire, taking in my cotton black shorts and my pink thin shirt with the three buttons at the top, two of which were unbuttoned. My hair was natural and I wasn't wearing any makeup either but I didn't think it mattered whether Harry saw me like this or not. He had seen me much worse before.
"When is he getting here?" Liam asked over his chewing, leaning back on the couch and crossing his feet at the ankles on top of the table. I scowled at him, pointedly glaring at his feet to get the hint and take his feet off the table. He ignored me.
"He's on his way right now. He doesn't live far so he should be here soon."
"Mm, cool." Liam smiled deviously and I narrowed my eyes at him.
"What are you going to do?"
"Me?" He faked innocence, his eyes wide before he shrugged and smiled big. "Nothing at all."
"You're lying."
"I would never."
I eyes him for another moment, grumbling quietly as I stood from the couch when I saw Morgan walking to Lila's room. I followed her quickly, slipping through the gap in her open door to see Lila tossing clothes back and forth. She was frantically looking at all her clothes, her eyes wide as she looked at the both of us watching her from the doorway. It was almost comedic how panicked she looked.
"I have no idea what to wear! Help me!" She ordered and Morgan laughed, walking further into the room to pick up a pair of jean shorts off the floor and a red and white stripped spaghetti strapped blouse that was hanging off the side of her bed.
"Here, wear this." Morgan said, and Lila eyed the clothing before snatching it out of her hand and hurriedly shrugging off the clothes she currently wore. She quickly changed, running her fingers through her strawberry blonde hair to flatten it out.
"How do I look?" She twirled around for us to get a good look at her and I held my thumb up in approval, smiling at her as her shoulders sagged in relief.
"Looking good." Morgan commented and Lila smiled before glancing at my attire, her eyebrows drawing together when she saw my cotton shorts.
"You're wearing that for Harry?"
"Yeah? We're friends."
She blinked. "You're wearing that for Harry?" She repeated and I rolled my eyes, mumbling to myself and crossing my arms over my chest.
"He's seen me in a much worse state, trust me." I mumbled and she shrugged, tossing her hair over her shoulder just as we heard a knock at the front door. Lila's eyes darted to me while mine widened before we both took off running through the doorway. She ran for the couch, tossing herself on it to look casual while I hurried to beat Liam to the door when I saw him standing up.
I darted past him just in time, running towards the front door and pausing in front of it to catch my breath once I reached it. Pulling it open, I saw Harry standing there with a loose gray t-shirt and his black skinny jeans. His hair was down, the curls hanging around his face as he sent me an adorable grin, his dimple puncturing his cheeks.
"Hey." He greeted and I smiled up at him, leaning against the doorframe as I tilted my head up.
"Hey." I forced my eyes to move away from him and to land on Anthony, seeing him standing just behind Harry with a blue fitted baseball t-shirt. "Hi Anthony."
"Hey," He smiled. "Thanks for letting me come."
"No problem, Lila wanted to see you." I smirked and his cheeks tinged a light pink as he gave me a closed lip grin. I laughed lightly, moving to the side and waving them in with my hand. "Come on in."
Harry was the first to step inside and after pointing in the direction of the living room for Anthony he was quick to leave us. He moved down the hallway while Harry and I stood by the door. He shoved his hands into his pockets, looking down at me as his eyes filled with amusement.
"I see you're already playing matchmaker."
"I don't mess around." I nodded and he laughed, his green eyes holding mine for a moment longer before he turned to look down the hallway. "You're sneaky by the way."
He turned to look at me, his eyebrows raised on his forehead. "Me? Sneaky? Never."
"You sent yourself my number then deleted the evidence."
"Hm, doesn't sound like me." He mused but I could see the faint twitch in his lips, the effort to keep a smile off his face failing.
"Yeah okay." I nudged him with my elbow and he laughed, staring down at me with a twinkle in his eye. He wouldn't stop staring and I fought hard to keep from blushing but when he lifted his hand to twirl a strand of my hair around his finger, my neck heated. He stared at me thoughtfully, his tongue poking out to lick his bottom lip.
"You look cute."
My stomach fluttered and I pressed my lips together, not quite knowing what to say after he complemented me. Do guy friends treat their girl friends like this? Was I supposed to be melting on the inside? No, I don't think I was.
"Thanks." I mumbled after a long moment of silence and he only smiled softly. I held his gaze, my eyes locked with his and just when I was about to tell him we should go out into the living room I heard another pair of feet padding against the hard wood floor. I looked over my shoulder just in time to see Liam stepping in to view, his eyes quickly falling on Harry's finger still brushing my hair. He took in our close proximity and I subconsciously stepped away from him, earning a smirk from Liam when he saw.
"Harry," He said, his tone rising in greeting as a wide grin spread across his face and I watched suspiciously as he walked up to us and slapped Harry on the back. "So, I heard you fucked my cousin." I gasped just as Harry's face seemed to drain of color as Liam threw his arm over Harry's shoulder. "Let's have a chat mate."
Oh god.
