Chapter Nine
Kendall Pov
It's been a week since I started training, and my body hurts so bad, and I have to use muscles that I didn't even know I had. Did you know your ass has muscles like what the fuck? I have been doing squats and running with Arlo and Jax. Jax advises me to work on strengthening my glutes. What the fuck is a glute, and why do I need to strengthen them? My legs and thighs are burning from the twenty squats I am doing right now. Every time I want to stop, Arlo slaps my ass and tells me to keep going. When I am finished, I finally sit down to rest. "I want you to run two miles in five minutes. Kendall." Arlo says.
I groan and look at him. "Come on, Arlo, let me stop running and start fighting something. For the past week, I have been running and performing these pointless squats. When will I get to work on the actual tasks?" I tell him I am tired of this useless training he is making me do.
"When I say so. I will make it five miles if you do not change your attitude now," he says, walking away.
"This is fucking stupid," I whispered to myself.
As he instructed, I get up and begin to run.
I clean up in the locker room after my two-mile run, and then I change. I go out, and I run into Arlo's friend; I believe his name is Reed. I've only seen him twice.
"Sorry I didn't see you there." I only get a glare in return.
"What the hell is his problem?" Saying this to myself, I go to Arlo's office to inform him that I am done.
I reach the office and, without knocking, open the door. And I wish I did because what I saw was something I didn't want to witness. Arlo has a girl hunched over his desk when I walk in.
Her groans reach my ears, and I bolt from the office, my heart pounding so hard in my chest that I swear it will burst at any moment.
I cannot understand why I am crying as I run down the hall because we never did anything together, and he was not even mine in the first place. He is merely a friend who is assisting me and teaching me self-defense.
I reach the Arlo vehicle and get into it. I send him a text message informing him that I will have Jax return the car to him and that I am leaving for my apartment.
I make it to my apartment and get out. I hand Jax the keys without looking at him.
"What's wrong, Ken?" He asks me.
"Nothing. I just don't feel good. I will see you tomorrow. I want to take a nap because I have work tonight." I say and rush inside.
I see that Missy and Ashley aren't here. I enter my room after passing through the living room. I collapse on my bed after slamming the door to my bedroom. I cry as I wipe my eyes and press my face against my pillow.
I have no idea why I feel so devastated. I was aware that he would never pursue someone like me. I am too rigid and damaged. Why would someone want to be with someone who has a psychotic ex-partner or be afraid of their own shadow? After crying for an hour, I get up and head to the shower. I get out and get ready for work after taking a shower.
I pull out a white crop top and a pair of shorts. I put on my makeup after grabbing a pair of gold hoops. I do a thick wing and mascara. In addition to wearing adorable sneakers, I wear my hair down in loose curls.
I see that the girls are home when I leave after finishing. "Heading to work. Wish I could stay and chat, but I'm already late. I will see you, their Ash." I say and head out.
I dash out of the apartment building and make my way to the bar, which is three blocks away. It is already crowded when I get there. Tobey and Korey are working behind the bar. I move behind the bar and approach them. "Where do you want me, boss man?" I ask him. "Hey, princess. The new girl cannot keep up, so please go wait the tables if you can." He says I shake my head and take my coat off and put my bag and coat behind the counter.
I take a pad and begin to take orders. "What can I get you guys?" I ask, and they start listing what they want. They all ordered wings, so I go to the bar and begin preparing drinks while I wait. It looks like I will get some good tips, but tonight is going to be a long night.
It has been so busy that I have not slowed down or taken a break in the three hours that I have been here. Tobey is currently in the office finishing up some paperwork, so I am working behind the bar as a waitress. Ashley arrived an hour ago and is currently working the bar as well. There are normally only two people working it, but tonight all three of us are. Although Korey is also new, he is keeping up with everyone quite well. I watch Jax, Arlo, and Reed enter as I take this order. After a few minutes, Elise enters behind them. I put my eyes down and finish taking orders and making drinks. I give them the drinks, and then I go over to the guys' seats and ask them what they want. "What can I get you?" I ask them.
"Hey Ken, How are you feeling?" Jax asks.
"I feel better now. What can I get you guys? I speak.
They ordered two beers, some wings, and a Jack and Coke. "I will bring your drinks back." I say with a smile.
A guy smacks my ass as I make my way back to the bar. I glare at him before turning to leave.
"Hey baby, why you got to be that way?" I simply ignore him as he says this.
I go make the drinks as I wait for the wings and take more orders for the ones at the bar. After done, I take the drinks back to the guys. The same guy approached me from behind and began grabbing me once more as I placed the drinks on the table. "Come on, baby, I can show you a good time." He says I shove him off me and try to get away, but he stops me. He reaches for me once more, but Arlo intervenes.
He begins yanking the man away from me, flinging him across the room and yelling at him. He hits the man repeatedly without giving him an opportunity to block or bounce back the blows.
"Arlo!" He does not seem to hear me when I yell. I approach him and take his arm. "That is enough, Arlo. You're going to kill him." I yell. He pauses, turns to face me, and leaves.
Everyone is staring at me as I stand there in disbelief over what just transpired. I shake my head and run to the back room. "What was that about?" Ash asks me as she follows me into the back room.
"Arlo jumped in and beat the fuck out of a creep who would not take his hands off me." I say, dumbfounded. "Yeah, I saw that. I am referring to Arlo's expression, which seemed to be a combination of jealousy and a desire to kill that man. She says.
I shake my head. "You have no idea what you are talking about. It's not what you think." After saying that, I return to the bar and resume my work.
