Chapter 14: "Emergency"...

#853 in Romance

Kiran's P.O.V.

Looking across the table at Layla I smile widely. This is actually the first time since I've come back that we were together without her ignoring me and me begging for forgiveness.

"What?" she asked squinting her eyes suspiciously.

Chuckling while shrugging I say. "This..." pointing to her then me. "... I miss this. I miss you. I miss us." grabbing her hand in mine.

"Yeah, me too." giving me a small smile but then pulled her hand away making me frown.

Silence fell between us. Why is this becoming awkward between us?

"So... Joe." breaking the silence which was killing me.

"Yeah... Joe." biting her lower lip. Something she did when she was in deep thought.

Leaning forward on the seat I grabbed her hand, this time in between both my hands so she wouldn't pull away. "Short stuff, he isn't worth you being upset or mad over. He is a piece of sh*t that never deserved you."

Staring into my eyes she exhaled. "I know that Ky. I've been over him for a long time now. It's just that-." stopping mid sentence.

"It's just what Layla?"

Shaking her head from side to side she went to speak but the ringing from my cell stopped her. Grunting I ignored it. Who ever it was can leave a message. "Sorry. Continue." smiling at her.

"It's just that-." starting again but my phone rang.

Annoyed I pulled out my phone to mute it but Layla stopped me. "Just answer Kiran. It may be important." pulling her hand away.

Sighing, I answered it keeping my eyes on her. "Hello?"

"Finally you answer! Where are you?" hearing Amelia's voice on the other line.

Not responding right away I see Layla get up from her chair, my eyes followed her as she walked over to the office window.

"Kiran!" forgetting that she was on the line.

"Sorry, what?" confused.

"Ugh, never mind. I need you to come over to my parent's house. It's an emergency."

Widening my eyes from what I hear I stand up. "All right, I'll be there as soon as possible."

"Okay, see you in a bit." ending the call.

"Is everything alright?" hearing Layla ask.

"I don't really know. Amelia called saying there was an emergency and to go over her parent's house." walking up to her.

"Oh, well go."

"I'm sorry short stuff. I wanted us to talk. We need to talk." cupping the side of her face. I didn't want to leave her but I had to make sure everything was all right at Amelia's parent's house.

Placing her hands over mine she smiled. "You don't need to apologize Kiran. She is your fiance and they are going to be your in-laws. They come first."

How could she think that?  "Leyla, you are important also. Don't ever forget that." kissing her forehead as I hugged her tightly. I missed holding her in my arms and her holding me back in her warm embrace.

Not wanting to let go, she lightly pushed me off of her. "Go Kiran, let me know if everything is well, okay?"

"I will. Talk to you later?" asking to make sure that we are able to talk.

Nodding her head yes I smiled again pecking her lips. "Call you later short stuff." Then made my way out of her office to the elevator. Figures that when Layla and I finally get the chance to be alone to talk, there's an emergency.

Jogging up the long walk way to my in-laws house I Pray that everything is all right. There aren't any medical personnel or police cars to inform me someone is hurt, so it could be something else.

Ringing the door bell I waited for someone to open it. A few minutes later, the door opens widely to reveal Constance, one of the maids they have on staff. "Hello Dr. Evans, Ms. Worthington is expecting you. Please follow me." turning around so I could follow her.

"Thank you Constance." greeting her as I walk inside.

The mansion the Worthington's lived in is big and up on a hill over looking the ocean. Mr. Worthington owns private charter planes all around the world while Mrs. Worthington is a heiress to a 500 Fortune company that her great grandfather had started.

Walking through the hall that leads to the outside patio, I hear voices and laughter. Constance opens the tall glass door that leads outside standing to the side so I can pass through. Taking the steps down I see Amelia, her parents and some of her friends around the table eating and having a good time. What the hell?

In confusion, I stare at them until Amelia notices me standing there. "Kiran! Darling you are finally here." standing up from her seat, she sped walked up to me with opened arms smiling at me.

"I've missed you darling." wrapping her arms around my neck as she brought me down for a kiss.

Pulling away I look at everyone else then down at her. "What is the emergency?"

Grabbing my hand she leads me to the table. "Kiran, how are you?" her mom asks standing up to give me a hug. Her father also stands to shake my hand.

"Hi Kiran." her friends say with a wave of their hand.

"Hello everyone." faking a smile but wanting to know what is going on.

"So happy you are here Ki-..." Amelia began to say but I cut her off.

"Of course. You told me there was an emergency so I came. What's going on? Are you all right?" questioning her with a raised brow.

"No I'm not. Daddy is giving me a limit on how many people we can invite because the venue will be too small to hold two hundred guests." pouting and whining like a small child. Was she f***ing serious?

"What?" asking in surprise.

"Exactly! My invite list is close to two hundred and fifty guests. Can you help me convince him?" fluttering her eyes at me while sticking out her lower lip.

"Sweetheart. I already told you that the venue you chose will not hold that many people. It's a safety code issue. I already told you we could have it at the vineyard overlooking the valley. The tents will be set up lavishly and how you want it." her father tries to appease her. Leave it to him to kiss her ass since she is the only child.

Stomping her foot she crossed her arms and pouted. "Mom! Help me!"

"Honey, it will look gorgeous if we had it there. It's open and the sunset is to die for." Mrs. W. sings songs the last part.

I can't believe that this is the reason why Amelia had called me over for. I left Layla for this? To see my fiance throw a tantrum over how many guests she couldn't invite? I was mad.

"Kiran. Help me. Please." turning to beg.

Sighing while I drag my hand down my face I chuckle. "Is this the reason why you called me over here? To convince your father, to let you invite all of the guests that you want? Are you serious right now Amelia? I was in the middle of something." frustrated at her.

She seemed taken back but didn't say a word. "Mr. Worthington. The vineyard is a great idea and I think two hundred guests is feasible. Don't you... Amelia?"

Her quick glare turned into pursed lips. "I suppose it's... feasible." turning to look at her dad then at me. "I need to talk to you, privately." grabbing my arm to lead me inside.

"Excuse us." I say over my shoulder not wanting to be rude.

We walked inside in silence and I knew she was upset with me. Reaching one of the foyers, she let go of my arm with her back to me, arms crossed in front of her.

"What the hell was that?" turning around to face me.

"What was what?"

Squinting her eyes at me in disbelief. "You, agreeing with my father. Embarrassing me in front of them."

"How the hell did I embarrass you Amelia?"

"You know how. You were supposed to back me up. I'm your fiance, soon to be wife and you are always supposed to back me up Kiran!" raising her voice at me at the end.

Narrowing my eyes at her, I clenched my jaw. "You know I do Amelia, but you are pouting like a child over how many guests you want at our wedding. Do you think it's fair that just because your parents are wealthy you can spend all of this money on all of these guests? Knowing maybe half of them?" I know she isn't that close to all of the two hundred and fifty guests she is so desperate to invite.

Her stare said plenty until she says huffing. "Fine. You are absolutely right Kiran. I was acting like a spoiled brat. Wasn't I?" pouting again as she walked up to me wrapping her arms around my waist.

"You were. Is this how you usually act when you don't get your way?"

Laughing she pecked my lips. "That was nothing." then winked at me.

"Did Amelia take you from something important Kiran? Since it is so nice to know that you would drop anything for our daughter when she calls." Mr. W. asked while I sat around the table drinking a glass of lemonade.

"As a matter of fact, yes." being honest. Spending time with Layla was very important, especially when we haven't been in good terms since I got back. Totally my fault of course.

"Oh darling, I'm so sorry. Where you in the hospital getting your things organized?" Amelia asked taking my hand in hers.

"Umm, actually no. I was with Layla." glancing over to her.

The look of surprise on her face let me know that she was going to be upset, plus she let go of my hand. "Is that why you didn't pick up your phone when I first called?" asking in a low voice.

"Isn't that the woman you've been friends with for a long time?" Mrs. W looked at her daughter then at me.

"Layla and I have been best  friends since we were in the sixth grade. We were inseparable and I know for a fact that if I wouldn't have joined Doctors without Boarders, we still would be. We know everything about each other and have gone through a lot together." smiling at her. Who would have thought that after all of these years we can still be best friends.

"Interesting." she muttered.

"What is?" glancing over to her mom.

"That you have a best friend that is a female. I'm sure anyone would assume that you and her-."

"MOTHER!" Amelia's squeal made me cringe.

"What? Am I wrong?" looking over to her husband who was chuckling.

"Doris, not everyone who has a best friend of the opposite sex have sexual relations. Isn't that right Kiran?" raising his bushy eyebrow at me.

Everyone around the table looked at me. Waiting for my answer. The one Layla and I have been asked thousand of times since our high school years...
