25. Hard To Say No
I knew I loved you then
But you'd never know
'Cause I played it cool
When I was scared of letting go

"How do you even know her again?" I asked McKenna as I found a parking space. The place was pretty packed which wasn't surprising since we were a little late.
My fault, which McKenna wouldn't let me hear the end of as we made our way here.
"She's Maia's older sister," McKenna said opening up the sun visor and fixing her make up in the mirror. She had her hair down in waves and was wearing a dark purple necklace that matched her dress.
"Yeah, I know how Maia knows her, but how do you," I said sarcastically leaning over the steering wheel to look up at the sky.
They couldn't have picked a better day to have a wedding. It was freaking pouring.
"I've met her while hanging out with Maia. Quite a few times. She invited me because we're friends," McKenna stressed out the last part.
"I see. Well hurry up or your friend might get married without your presence. It would be a tragedy," I proclaimed looking back over at McKenna.
She closed the visor and gave me a dull look, "Well if you weren't always late maybe we would have been here earlier."
Oh, here we go again.
"I'm ready. You're the one taking your sweet time," I mocked as she narrowed her eyes at me. She looked great even when she was obviously considering punching me.
"Shut up," she pointed her finger at me.
I chuckled putting my hands up in mock surrender. "You ready?" I asked referring to the rain. We were going to have to run a few yards.
"Always," she answered opening her door.
10:18 p.m.
"Oh my, I'm tired," Maia sighed flopping down in the seat next to me. McKenna followed sitting on the opposite side of me as the DJ began playing slow songs.
"I never would have guessed," I replied. They looked just as tired as I felt, but for different reasons.
Maia shoved me, "Losers who sit around don't get to judge."
Maia and McKenna had been gone for a while, disappearing onto the dance floor. They tried to get me to come, but my weariness had caught up with me.
"I didn't feel like dancing."
My nights were sleepless again. I haven't had a chance to visit Lexi to refill my prescription. I've been crazy busy in the studio and when I wasn't there I was either with McKenna or too tired to leave my apartment.
Sadly, being tired was not accompanied with sleep.
On the plus side, while they left me for the dance floor, some fans kept me company. They were really talkative but I didn't mind seeing as I only had to listen and not really talk myself.
Maia gave me a pointed look, "Even McKenna was dancing. If the dance floor can handle her, it can handle whatever disastrous moves you're embarrassed of."
I laughed as McKenna got defensive, "Hey! I've gotten better."
"Of course you have, sweetie," Maia soothed. She was in her bridesmaid dress and seemed to be radiating with happiness-from her sister's wedding no doubt.
"I don't understand why you always have to bring that up," McKenna muttered insulted.
"It's hard not to," Maia reasoned.
"Whatever," McKenna said standing up. She looked down at me, reaching out for my hand, "C'mon, your turn."
"I don't really feel like it."
McKenna rolled her eyes, "Stop being such a sour puss ." She shook her hand slightly waiting for me to take it.
Her hazel eyes were glowing in the darkened reception hall. Her dark purple dress fit closely around to her waist while her hair flowed down, now in careless waves. She was beautiful.
Fuck, it was hard saying no when she was looking at me like that.
I took her hand, getting out of my seat. She smiled at me the way she did and I was glad I accepted her offer.
"That's cool. I'll just sit here. Dateless and alone." Maia called out.
"Great," I grinned back at her, "Make sure no one takes my mini hotdogs." I gave her a serious look pointing at my plate.
I could feel McKenna chuckle next to me as we made our way to the dance floor while XO started playing.
"I think they sell those at grocery stores," McKenna offered as I put my hand on her waist with my other intertwined with hers. Her other hand rested on my shoulder as we swayed. We were surrounded by guests that were dancing similarly while the ones that needed breaks walked off.
I shook my head, appalled. "They don't taste nearly as good." How could she even suggest that?
We continued to flow to the rhythm in unison. McKenna smiled amused, "Then I guess you'll just have to go to more weddings."
"As long as you're my date."
Woah.
What?
Her eyes widened a bit at her own shock.
I didn't know where that came from, but I knew I didn't want to take it back. That was the last thing on my mind, actually.
"As long as no one makes fun of my dancing," McKenna finally said a hint of red filling her cheeks.
I laughed, "You're not that bad. Maia just likes to mess with you."
"Well she's doing a good job," McKenna scoffed.
The beat started to pick up a bit and I moved away from McKenna, now both her hands in mine. Realizing what I was doing, McKenna followed my lead as I let go of her left hand.
I brought up our arms and watched as she twirled under. Once my arm was extended, she spun back toward me.
Surprised by the spin, she slightly lost her footing crashing into me. My hand went to the small of her back to balance her. I was unable to break our gaze, her face mere inches from mine. She looked up at me with an expression that showed uncertainty, yet her eyes held an intensity that made my heart clench.
I began moving again, cracking a smile to try and swap aside this new feeling of wanting to kiss her.
Before I could act on my chaotic thoughts and possibly ruin one of the only good things in my life, I spoke.
"That wasn't half bad."
Short but one of my favorites. Your thoughts??
