Prove them wrong
This is also it's own book but I put it here too lmao
----
Charlotte watched as ray and Henry came down the tubes, each holding a cup of coffee. Charlotte found it odd that they managed to get the drinks, neither of them bring money to fights or patrols.
"Hey guys!" Charlotte greeted them. "I see you got drinks?"
"Yeah, sorry we couldn't get you one, the guy we got the money from only had ten dollars on him." Henry explained.
"It's fine- wait, what do you mean?" She asked.
"We wanted drinks, so we knocked out someone on the street and took ten bucks out of his wallet." Ray said.
"Wait, WHAT? You stole from some random guy off the street?" Charlotte didn't want to believe what she was hearing, but knowing them, it was likely they were telling the truth.
Henry nodded. "We'll pay him back if we can find him."
"Besides," ray began. "We're superheroes, we can do whatever we want!"
Charlotte looked disgusted, but at the same time she wasn't too surprised. After all, this wasn't the first time the two 'heroes' had done something illegal or just plain wrong and got away with it.
She was going to protest, but she decided against it. There was no use talking to them, anyway. They wouldn't listen. She just let out an exasperated sigh and said she had to go.
Instead of heading home, Charlotte headed to a nearby bar and ordered some strawberry tea. This bar served plenty of non-alcoholic drinks, and it was Charlotte's favorite place to come and calm down after work. Not to mention her friends came here often. As she took a drink, she noticed jasper sit down and order something as well.
"Jasper? What are you doing here?" She asked, putting her drink down.
"Well, I see you come here a lot and people say it's a nice place, so I thought I'd come give it a try and get some soda here or something,"jasper replied, shrugging. "Plus, I want to talk about captain man and kid danger."
Charlotte paused. He better not-
"I feel like they're starting to do more harm than good lately." Jasper said as he grabbed his drink and took the fruit off of it and popping it in his mouth. "It's like they think they're in some kind of bubble where as long as they aren't killing innocent people, it's not bad."
Charlotte nodded in acknowledgment. "It's like they're just abusing their status as heroes at this point."
"I agree." A strange voice said. Charlotte turned to see a young woman, not much older than her and sporting short pink hair looking at them, a glass of what appeared to be bourbon in one hand. "Captain man and kid danger's fame must've gone to their heads or something."
"I know! They act like undefeatable gods or something." Jasper said, leaning forward so the woman could see him better. "And everyone knows nobody is like that, superhero or not."
The woman nodded. "Not to mention that time captain man left his sidekick to fend off a horde of people much bigger than him so he could be in a news report. He could have at least helped the poor kid!"
"I don't want to seem like a supervillain or anything, but sometimes I wish some big threat would come along and just defeat them one time. Just to put them back in Their place." Charlotte mumbled, taking a sip of her drink.
"Do you happen to be good with tech?" She asked Charlotte, sliding her empty glass to the other side of the table for more.
She stopped what she was doing and looked up at the woman, confused for a moment. "Yeah, why?"
"I am too," the woman said before leaning in and speaking quietly. "I bet that if we worked together, we could stage a threat and defeat them."
"What? Fake a threat?"
"Yeah, I saw it happen before. Someone faked a threat and the two heroes arrived."
"...where did you see this happen?" Charlotte asked, remembering the time jasper pretended to be a criminal to help her.
"The gizmo show." She said. Charlotte froze. How could this woman have known what had happened there?
"...how did you know it wasn't a real criminal?"
"It was extremely obvious. It's like the actor playing the criminal didn't even try, it was probably all just to break something so they could get rid of information."
She can see right through them! Charlotte thought. Just now did she get a good look at the mysterious woman. She had deep brown eyes that resembled tree bark, and smudges from old eyeliner no longer there surrounding them that went surprisingly well with the septum piercing she was wearing, all framed by bright pink short hair. A strange person to see in swellview, but not a suspicious one.
"I would do that, but I don't know what I would do or how to do it."
Charlotte took a long sip of her drink. "I bet I could come up with something."
The woman leaned in once more and spoke in barely a whisper. "Meet me by the warehouse just outside of downtown swellview at five o'clock pm Tomorrow. Bring a toolbox."
Charlotte was going to say something back, she wanted to say she wouldn't go, but with the way ray and Henry had been acting and how they blatantly robbed someone earlier that day convinced her that something had to be done. So, with reluctance and a strange sense of doing the right thing, she agreed to it.
"My name's kat by the way." The woman smirked before finishing the last of her bourbon and leaving.
Charlotte had turned to see if jasper was still there, but it seemed he was long gone. His only warning being a text saying he went to go hang out with Henry. She sighed and went home.
The next day, after work Charlotte walked through the city, determination in her eyes. At the man cave, ray and Henry had gotten worse, they almost destroyed the entire base over an argument over something so insignificant she had already forgotten what it was. I feel like I can't reason with them anymore, like this is the only way they'll understand what they're doing is wrong. She thought as she approached the empty building.
Charlotte knocked on the door. "Hello? It's Charlotte!"
The door opened to reveal kat. She looked happy that Charlotte actually arrived, then brought her inside.
"The owners of this warehouse rent it out to mechanics and engineers as a temporary garage to work in." She explained as she took out lots of empty blueprint paper and something to write with.
For the next six months, Charlotte and kat worked to plan and build several battle drones. The weapons on them were subpar at best, but it was enough to work with effectively. Charlotte had even gone as far as to put dye in water and load it into one of the drones so that it would spray the water at captain man and trick him into thinking it was jolly beetle tears, his weakness. By the time they were finished, they had four terrifyingly large battle drones to control. Each one good for a different method of attacking. Charlotte smiled at her and Kat's work.
Finally.
* * *
Henry sat on the man cave couch, talking about what happened on a patrol with ray. They clinked their glasses of soda together as they laughed about something. Henry was about to open his mouth to speak, but he was interrupted by the siren going off. Ray jumped up to see what was going on, the only thing they had was a video message, showing two large robots preparing to attack the city.
"Robots? Who would have giant robots?" Henry shouted in disbelief.
"I don't know, but let's go stop them! Imagine the interviews! The online praise! Everyone will love us more than they already do!" Ray said excitedly as he transformed.
But when they arrived, it turns out the two heroes severely underestimated the size of the opponents. One of them looked like a 30 foot tall sentient suit of armor, and the other a massive animalistic creature made from what appeared to be bronze. It stared at them with piercing blue eyes made from neon lights as it bared it's teeth of steel.
Fear clawed at kid danger's stomach. Nothing like this had ever been in swellview before, and all they had were several weapons and their own luck. He looked over at captain man, who looked equally nervous. But despite the pit in his stomach, he held up a his laser in a shaky hand.
One of the robots squared up, and the other bared it's teeth. The two heroes looked at each other before firing wildly at the robots, unsure of what else to do.
The animalistic robot fired back, canons hidden in it's antlers. Kid danger ran for his life, but even with his powers, he just barely evaded the attacks.
"Captain man, where are you?" He shouted. No reply. Kid danger ran for cover behind a building, which the bot didn't fire at. He caught a glimpse of captain man fighting a smaller version of the more humanoid robot, and considerably losing.
The young hero charged at the small robot and tackled it. It punched him squarely in the nose. Kid danger hissed and shot it. It's head practically exploded. captain was hit by the white-hot wreckage. Kid danger had no time to say anything, as he got shot with a laser that made him feel as if his whole body burned for a split second.
"You may have brought fire, but We'll the the people people to put it out!" Captain man shouted as he grabbed kid danger by the arm and dragged him to the mancopter and took off.
The two heroes fired at them from above, and though it was considerably more effective, they still didn't appear to take a lot of damage.
"Drive the helicopter, kid!" Captain said as he shoved his sidekick in front of the controls. Kid danger had learned what to do from a while ago, so he confident in his skills. Captain man took out a grappling hook and fired at the top of a building and swung, throwing small grenades at the robots.
Kid danger watched as the humanoid robot grabbed captain by the grappling hook's string and he fell right in it's massive hand. Doesn't this helicopter have any built in weapons?
But kid danger was too late, the massive humanoid robot threw the hero in the air like a volleyball and slammed him back into the helicopter so hard it tilted sideways for a split second.
"Get closer, I'm going to try and throw some grenades!" Captain man barked.
the second they got close, the animalistic robot opened it's colossal jaws and sprayed gallons of a liquid at them, the unmistakable color of jolly beetle tears.
The hero screamed and tried to shield his face from his one weakness being fired at him.
"LAND KID, LAND ON THAT BUILDING! WE CANT RISK THE MANCOPTER GETTING DAMAGED!"
Kid danger did just that, and they both grabbed as many weapons as they could possibly hold, and ran to another side where the robots were, and gave it everything they had.
The robots fought back, kid danger sustaining some minor injuries that sent him running off, whimpering like a wounded dog.
"Kid, where are you going?" Captain man shouted, unaware of the humanoid robot about to crush him with it's outstretched hand.
"WATCH OUT!"
But it was too late, it already tried to Crush the hero, but it immediately retracted it's hand and grabbed it, for the hero's powers left the robot with a hole in it's hand.
"...I'm okay! But it shocked me!" Captain man complained.
The same robot fired heat seeking missiles at captain man, which hit him one after the other. They were weak enough to not damage the building, but the mancopter suffered some burns. Before kid danger knew it, some smoke bombs went off and he couldn't see a thing.
"Kid! Get inside the mancopter!"
Though the young hero couldn't see a thing, he waved his hands blindly until he found it and got in, captain man following and soon enough, they took off.
"Where are you going? The robots didn't stop!"
Captain man gave his sidekick a solemn look. "I know, but we couldn't fight anymore. You got hurt and they sprayed jolly beetle tears on me."
Kid danger looked extremely disappointed, yet also terrified. "But..."
"We lost."
It was silent the entire ride back, but the two heroes were thinking the same thing. We can't lose, we're captain man and kid danger! How did we lose?
Once they returned, captain man plopped on couch and let out a wail of anguish while kid danger tended to his wounds.
Charlotte walked in, acting perfectly innocent. None of them suspected a thing.
"Henry! Ray!" She said, acting worried. "I saw those robots! Are you okay?"
"Well-"
"WE LOST!" Ray shouted, his voice dripping with defeated sadness. "We failed swellview! We failed ourselves! We failed everyone! Nobody will ever trust us again!"
"Guys, what happened to you out there?" She asked.
"I got hurt." Henry said as he transformed back into his normal clothes.
"How badly?" Charlotte replied, she didn't mean to to hurt him, at least not badly.
I got hurt in this fight, that's never happened to me before! Henry thought as he pulled up his pant leg to show some minor scratches and a bruise or two.
"I had to stop fighting."
Charlotte looked down at his leg, then back up at him.
"Seriously?"
"What?"
"That's a big reason you lost the fight?"
"Yeah..."
Charlotte looked at him, disappointed. "You could have easily kept going, and you stopped after minor wounds?"
"They hurt!"
"If you stop after a small Injury like that, you'll never take down a real criminal."
Henry stared at his friend, feeling incredibly stupid that his own ego blinded him from this realization. How would she know? She doesn't fight crime!
"Huh?"
"Don't cower as soon as you sustain minor injuries, you have to keep going as long as you possibly can. Even if you have blood streaming Down your face, if you can fight, fight."
"But one of the robots sprayed jolly beetle tears!" Ray complained.
"What if it was fake?" Charlotte asked. "A trick?"
"It couldn't have been, it was the same color and everything!" Ray replied, looking like he would stay on that couch in a dismal haze forever.
"But did it mess with your powers?"
"...no."
"Then I bet it was a trick to scare you." Charlotte said.
"So, It might make the news that you lost the fight, and people might talk about it, but I'm sure that if you keep trying, figuring out what went wrong and working to fix it, people will still love and admire you, maybe even more than they did before." Charlotte said, trying to cheer them up.
Ray and Henry both looked like they were encouraged, as if they were going to get up and listen to her advice. But then ray gave Charlotte a sarcastic look, and started laughing in a mocking tone.
"look at Charlotte, she think pushing yourself to the limits is going to help!" He practically squawked.
Henry agreed.
Charlotte sighed and went back up to junk-n-stuff.
For the next few attempts at defeating the robots, Charlotte worked hard to win every time. No matter how many weapons they brought, no matter how many things they threw at them, she proved from a distance that the heroes aren't invincible. Though she knew she had to do this, she felt bad, especially seeing them come back afterwards, Their heads hanging low in defeat. But she knew she had to teach them a lesson, even if it meant almost destroying half the mancopter by mistake.
As for ray and Henry, all hope seemed lost. Their helicopter was destroyed, they've been defeated multiple times, and all of swellview had been anxiously talking about how powerful these robots are. Yet somehow, the obligation of protecting swellview fueled them to try again with little effort or actual motivation, but better weapons.
Charlotte knew damn well that such a mentality would keep them in this loop forever, but they didn't pick that up until much later. As soon as they did, everything clicked into place. They looked at the flaws in their plans and ways of attack, And Charlotte, witnessing all of it, worked to make sure the weak spots she intentionally put in each machine were weak enough to work.
Once everything was in place, the machines marched into swellview, where the two heroes were waiting for them with a brand new armored mancopter, a new mindset, and a plan.
The humanoid robot cracked it's iron knuckles. The animalistic one bared its teeth. Despite the intimidation, Kid danger was determined. He ran right past the strange metal creature, firing at it a few times to keep it's attention, but he disappeared behind a building, leaving the massive machine confused. The young hero darted under it and noticed a solid plate on its underbelly, looking a bit loose compared to the rest of the steel armor.
A weak spot! He realized. But what if it's a trap?
But kid danger had no more time to think, the machine caught him and tried to crush him with it's clawed feet. He ran for his life and dragged captain man to the mancopter, where they took off again.
"No, this doesn't work! Attacking from above kept being the reason it didn't work!" Captain man said as they ascended into the sky.
"I know! But one of them has weapons we can destroy from up here! When the animal thing fires at us from its horns, fire back! We can take down one defense!" Kid danger shouted. That was part of the plan, after all. "Remember, look for weak spots!"
Captain man nodded and fired away at one of the creature's canons. It didn't do much, However.
"Distract them, I'm going to go!" The hero shouted as he took a grappling hook and a fully loaded blaster.
He then jumped out and as he swung across the city's skyline, firing at the canons on the creature. A loud explosion could be heard, and once the smoke cleared, kid danger noticed one of the canons were destroyed.
He really did it! He thought as the hero was swatted by the animalistic robot back into the mancopter.
"Kid, I can't stay airborne like that for very long." He said, panting. "I'll be the distraction, go!"
Kid danger took the grappling hook and looked out at the robots. Fear clawed at his throat, but he remembered that he trained for something like this when they were planning the attack.
The young hero then took a handful of man-grenades, shot the hook, and stared.
The young hero watched as the hook latched on to the top of a skyscraper.
The young hero let his feet leave the surface of the mancopter.
The young hero fired blindly at the direction of the humanoid robot, the cold wind hitting his face like a hail of bullets.
The young hero felt the breath knocked out of him as he hit the surface of the building and rolled a few feet, but was delighted to know he was okay. He quickly jumped back up and threw some of his grenades at the canons, which did significant damage, as he could tell from the smoke rising.
Two canons, down, two more to go.
"Kid! The human looking one has a giant axe!" Captain man shouted as he went past him in the mancopter.
Kid danger knew what he had to do, and took the mini grenades and the grappling hook and flew, finally understanding the technique. He got close to one, retracted the hook, fell for a split second, and went back up again for a new target. As he flew across the city's skyline, he noticed captain man was firing at the robots' defenses, while his sidekick kept them occupied.
He may have been in a lot of well, danger, as the robot's axe was being swung at him continuously, but he was having a surprising amount of fun simply flying around on the grappling hook and occasionally shooting one of the machines.
Kid danger smiled as he flew all around the battlefield, but was eventually stopped by the humanoid robot, and he slammed into it's steel hand, just like his boss did two months ago.
The robot then threw him into the air, and a gust of air sent him flying, but he ended up landing softly in the helicopter.
"Captain man! I could have broken my neck!" He shouted.
"Okay, just listen to me." Captain man ordered. "That machine axe is almost destroyed, and there's only one thing we can do at this point. Take that flamethrower, and when we get close, just blast that weapon with it."
"Wait, we have a flamethrower?" Kid danger asked.
"We don't have much fuel, but we have a flamethrower."
"Alright. Fly closer."
The hero flew his sidekick within range of the target, and he pulled the trigger.
Despite knowing what would happen, there was something surprising about watching the flames shoot out. The robot used it's axe to block the flames while the other used it's last remaining canon to send a hail of bullets at the mancopter.
But all too quickly, the flamethrower ran out of fuel. No damage was sustained, but the humanoid robot took a long took at it's weapon. Captain man closed the door.
"Hey- what are you doing?"
"We're landing."
"Why?"
"They have weak spots that we can't reach in here."
Kid danger opened his mouth to speak, but the sound of something exploding and the sight of flaming wreckage hitting the door filled his senses.
The battle axe thing got too hot, and it exploded!
They landed once the wreckage settled, and noticed that some of it destroyed the animalistic robot's last canon.
The two heroes ran out brandishing blasters, wire cutters, and the last of the man-grenades.
They both looked the animalistic robot dead in the eye, and captain man began to speak.
"Looks like you two are going to the junkyard!" He shouted, but was immediately interrupted by gallons of fake jolly beetle tears being sprayed at them.
Kid danger saw he showed no fear, instead taking it dead on. While this happened, he noticed a weak spot in the humanoid robot's back, so he took off and climbed the machine's colossal body, using nothing but his own skill to scale the opponent. Once he reached it's back he could barely hold on, and had to pry open the weak panel with the wire cutters. It fell against the rest of the Machine with a loud clang, and the young hero, slightly disgusted with himself, climbed inside and slammed the panel shut before turning on a flashlight.
He was greeted with a forest of wires, the inner workings of the Machine. The young hero looked on in wonder. It was obvious they were there, but it was still a rather surreal sight for him.
Kid danger took out the wire cutters, took a deep breath, and began hacking away at the cords. Little did he know, Charlotte and kat specifically designed this robot's wires to be extra long, so that enough cuts would end in it's demise.
After what felt like Forever, the wires began to spark. In a panic, kid danger blindly felt for the loose panel and pushed it out. With the metal panel as his cushion, kid danger plummeted towards the ground just as the robot did.
The young hero hit the ground mere seconds before the machine did, it's massive body crushing half of the nearby road in the process.
He saw captain man running towards him and dragging him by his arm to the animalistic robot's underbelly.
"Keep it busy, I'll attack the weak spot!" Captain man said, reloading his blaster.
Kid danger ran right in front of it, firing his laser, not caring that the Machine was completely impervious to such a weak weapon.
The animalistic robot kept trying to crush him with it's iron paws, but each time kid danger evaded the attack, just barely making it sometimes.
The young hero looked at his companion, who was making good progress. He could tell by the dents in the weak panel. In fact, he was so focused on watching captain man destroy the panel that he didn't realize the animalistic robot had opened it's jaws to trap him.
Kid danger looked up, screamed, and ran. Pieces of concrete hit his back as the animalistic machine's head hit the road.
As he watched the robot pick it's head back up, he heard captain man's muffled voice saying something he couldn't make out.
The hero shoved the fallen weak panel off of him and ran, grabbing kid danger in the process, hiding them both behind a building, and telling him to cover his ears before doing the same.
A loud thump! Filled the air, followed by the animalistic robot crashing down right on top of it's humanoid companion.
Kid danger's ears rang for a few seconds, and dead silence ensued.
The roads surrounding the fight were destroyed, the skyscrapers around them had a few broken Windows, and the clear blue sky above them seemed to seep into every corner of the battlefield.
"...did we win?" Captain man finally broke the silence.
The two heroes slowly went around the corner and saw that both robots lay there, smoke billowing out of them.
The fires of euphoria and the rains of relief filled kid danger, his lips curled into a smile, and he turned to captain man, who felt the exact same way.
"We won..." captain man began. "We won kid, we really won!" His eyes lit up.
"We seriously did it!" Kid danger replied, he couldn't help but smile. "We defeated the robots!"
Kid danger bear hugged his companion from excitement, and stared over at the broken machines. The young hero sighed, relieved.
* * *
As soon as they came back and transformed, Charlotte burst in to congratulate the two on their achievements.
"We won, Charlotte! We really won!" Henry said as he bear hugged her as well, still as excited as ever.
"I knew you could do it!" Charlotte replied, grinning.
"It was really hard to do but after a few tries we defeated them." Ray said.
"What happened when you were done, ray?" Charlotte asked.
His face lit up. "The man fans came along with a couple photographers to take pictures and things, we got to stand on top of the robots for them! We were both pretty tired, so we came back after this, but We're going to grab ice cream to celebrate in a little bit!"
"That's good to hear." She replied.
"You know, this whole thing made me realize all the fame kinda went to my head." Ray continued sheepishly. "I hope that never happens to me again."
Charlotte smiled to herself, all that work didn't go to waste after all.
