Chapter 5: Welcome back, Matt

^^^^^^^^^^Celena's outfit for the day

^^^^^Viktor's outfit for the day (except the jacket)

After a month of living in Hemlock Grove, life for Celena seem to fallen into a routine. She goes to school. Spends lunch with Shelley while avoiding Roman as best as she could. Hangs with Peter afterwards or Shelley when Roman and her mom wasn't home. Even Viktor would come over and get to know Shelley. Celena could see something spark between the two of them. Some days Peter and Celena would spend weekends having sex, but other days, they just talked. About their past, stuff they like and enjoy. And some nights, when Celena sleeps over, the dreams would get worse. She couldn't explain it. The same dream of the Ouroboros, the Angel-man, the moon, and the wolf. But, lately, the dream would show a pyramid or a triangle of some sort. The moon was on the top while the Angel and the wolf were at the bottom corners. It was driving her nuts.

About 6 weeks through out their time at school, Celena and Viktor finally spotted a familiar face they haven't seen in 5 months. Matthew Garetty.

Celena was chattering with Shelley in the courtyard and, as usual, Roman was watching from afar. Like a creepy stalker. While Roman was watching Celena; Viktor, and Shelley were studying with her and sharing notes, he spies a boy he never seen before sneak up behind Celena and covers her eyes.

Celena scoffs, "If this is Roman again, I'm at the right height to headbutt you in the dick." She warns.

"Doubt you can hit that far with your head." A familiar voice speaks out.

Celena gasps and yanks the boy's hands off her eyes, she turns and screams in shock and happiness.

"Oh my god! Matt!" She jumps up and hugs him tight.

Viktor shouts happily and gets up, joining the hug.

Matt grunts and laughs, "I missed you, too, guys."

Celena cries happily and hugs him tighter, afraid he'll disappear again.

"Aw, Celly." Matt rubs her back.

Roman didn't like the sight before him and flings out his cigarette angrily at the ground before stomping off. At the same time, Peter was walking into the courtyard and frowns at what he sees.

"I can't believe you're finally back. You are back, right? No more breakdowns?" Celena asks with caution.

Matt smiles at his friends, "I'm back for good. It was rough over there. First few months had me...in a really bad spot. But..." He sighs. "Just gotta take it one day at a time."

Celena smiles but and hugs him one more time.

"Just so glad you're ok. And back, too." She pulls away and sees Peter walking up to them.

"Who's this?" He asks as he wraps an arm around Celena, as if he was marking his territory.

Celena chuckles, "Peter, this is Matt. We told you about him, remember?"

Peter nods, remembering about Viktor's and Celena's life. About their friends who shares the same powers. Matt was the only survivor besides Viktor and Celena.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Peter Rumancek." Peter holds his hand out and Matt takes it.

"Nice to meet you, too. Matt. Matt Ryan." Matt says, shaking Peter's hand.

Celena leans in, "Matt Ryan? Seriously?" She asks softly, incredulous.

Matt shrugs, "It was the name a guy gave me when I paid him for a new identity." He whispers.

Viktor turns to sit back down with Shelley and throws his arm around her, "Matt, I want you to meet our new friend and..." Viktor smiles at Shelley with a loving and gentle smile. "Someone very special to me. This is Shelley. Shelley Godfrey. Shelley, This is Matt. Our..." Viktor's voice trails off, trying to figure out what to call him.

"Their cousin. I'm their cousin." Matt quickly fills in for him.

Shelley smiles shyly at Vikot and looks over to Matt. Giving him a friendly wave and gets her phone.

"It's very nice to meet you." She types and holds her hand out.

Matt was a little startled, but smiles anyway and gently takes her hand, welcoming her greet.

"It's nice to meet you as well. Hope the big guy is behaving." Matt pats Viktor's shoulder.

Viktor rolls his eyes and hold up three fingers, a sign for scout's honor. Shelley giggles a little and looks away shyly. Celena could see a relationship blooming bright. But, she knows how terrified Shelley is of her mother finding out.

Speaking of terror, that same month after the full moon, the body of a young girl named Brooke Bluebell was found in the park just a few miles from town and from Peter's trailer.

"Oh, man, that's bad. That's really bad." Deputy grimaces at the sight as the coroner investigates the body and let's EMT place her into a body bag and carry her off.

Sheriff Sworn stood with his two main deputies and sighs in disappointment, seeing something so awful happening in his town.

"I know her family. I went to school with her dad." He says.

"That's pretty tough. First day at school." One deputy says.

"Some first day."

"Anything in the perimeter?"

"No sign of a weapon, Sheriff."

"Tracks?"

Soon, Peter and Celena were walking by to head to school, but slowed their pace as they see the scene before them. Seeing the ambulance, the police. It made them nervous a bit. But, Peter holds her hand, calming her nerves.

"No. Nothing. It's all hard-packed sand." Peter could hear the police talking from where they stood.

"The car was all busted up on the road. Window broken in."

"Jesus Christ. Who could've done that?"

"What's going on?" Celena asks.

Peter leans in, "Someone's car has been broken into, I guess." He shrugs. "But, I can smell blood. Something is off."

Suddenly, Peter snaps his head once he hears the deputy again.

"Who are those kids?"

Celena watches with caution as she sees them looking at her and Peter.

"Bring them to me." Peter hears the Sheriff's voice and watches the skinny, buck-toothed deputy make his way towards them.

"You two kids, come here please." The deputy calls out to them.

Peter acts like a deep in headlights, pointing at himself and Celena, "Us, sir?"

"You're the only kids I see." The deputy says sarcastically.

"We were just walking through, we weren't..." Celena tries to explain, but the deputy cuts her off.

"Just come here, please, OK?" The deputy wags his finger at them to walk with him towards the other cops.

"OK." Peter mutters and scratches his head as he takes Celena's hand to walk her down the small hill, towards the cops. He could feel her hands shaking. "It's ok, they're just gonna ask us about what happened here." He whispers to her, trying to calm her down.

"The sheriff would like to have a word with you." The deputy says as he brings them to the Sheriff like he asked.

"You live around here, son?" The Sheriff directs his attention at Peter.

"Yeah. Home's that way, and school's that way, so I was...we were just walking through."Peter says as he points both directions and gestures at himself and Celena.

"And you, miss? You live close?" Sheriff moves his attention to Celena.

"I live in town, actually. My brother, Viktor, and I." Celena says as she holds on to Peter's hand tightly.

Sheriff looked disappointed with her answer, so he turns back to Peter.

"Did you happen to hear anything last night?" Sheriff asks.

"No, sir. It was a quiet night." Peter scratches his beard.

"What's your name?" Sheriff asks.

"It's Peter, sir, uh, Rumancek." Peter stutters a little.

One of the deputies takes down his name.

"And you? Your name, miss?" Sheriff asks Celena.

"Celena, Celena Banks, sir." She says. "What...what's going on here?" She asks as she watches the ambulance drives away with the coroner, but forensics were still at the scene.

Sheriff Sworn turns towards the buck-toothed deputy, "Get their statement, get their IDs, make sure they both get to school." Sheriff orders.

The buck-toothed nods and gestures Celena and Peter to follow, "OK. Come on. Come on.".

Peter and Celena both followed the deputy, but Peter could hear the other deputy with the Sheriff.

"Rumancek."

"Vince Rumancek?"

"Gypsy trash."

Peter frowns and Celena caught that, she lifts their intertwine hands and brings to her chest, giving it a gentle squeeze while giving him a small smile.

"I'll take you both in my cruiser. Come on. One of you can sit in the front, but don't touch anything." The deputy warns as he opens the doors for them. Peter helps Celena to sit in front while he took the back. She was touched, but wishes she was back there with Peter. Instead, she was getting eye-fucked by a buck-toothed rent-a-cop.

It didn't take long for the news to hit this town and what a reaction it caused to the people. It was all they were talking about. The girl was quite popular. Straight A student, cheerleader/cheerleader coach, volunteer.

Viktor was video chatting with Shelley about the whole incident. Apparently, Shelley the girl who was killed.

"Yeah, I heard about it from Cel. It's awful."

Viktor's voice erupts from her computer speakers. She clicks on the radio, listening to the news report about the attack.

"It's terrible something like this happened. Especially, to someone I know." She types on her text to speech technology on her computer as she gives the we camera a sad look.

"I hear you. I'm sorry, Shelley. But, all we can do now is pray for her family and savor the good memories you have of her."

Shelley sighs sadly, "I'll try. But, it's still so sad." Tears begin to trail down her cheek.

Viktor sighs, frustrated that he wasn't there, "Do you want me to come over?" He asks.

Shelley shakes her head, "Roman is here. And mother should be back soon."

Viktor nods in understanding and listens to the report.

"...police are describing is as one of the most grizzly..."

"Ok. Just wish I could be there to comfort you." Viktor gives her a small smile.

Shelley gives him a shy one as her face glows blue again, but still looked so sad at the screen, sniffling softly.

"Hey." Roman's voice speaks up as he walks into the bedroom.

Shelley quickly shuts off the chat and looks over to Roman with tears in her eyes. She didn't want him to know she was chatting with a boy. Especially, a boy she really likes.

"Hey, Shelley." He frowns when he sees his sister's tear-stained face and walks over to hold her in his arms. Hearing the radio report in the background. He shakes his head, knowing how emotional his sister can get when it comes to people's deaths. People she knew.

"In local memory. A young student was found killed..."

"What is it?" He asks softly and she continues to cry softly.

"And partially disemboweled earlier this morning in Kilberry Park of south Hemlock Grove."

The new report continued and Roman could tell it was upsetting her, so he shut it off and continues to comfort her, "Shh, shh, shh, shh. It's OK. It's OK. I'm here. I'm here. It's OK."

Viktor sighs sadly as the chat was cut out. He heard Roman's voice before Shelley cut the call. He knew she was just being cautious. He didn't want her to get into any trouble with her family.

"The coroner has tentatively identified the victim as Brooke Bluebell, 17, a student attending. Penrose High School. Bluebell was last seen leaving school yesterday afternoon, and her car was reportedly discovered near the crime scene. Officials are refusing to speculate on the cause of death, but eyewitnesses suggest the ferocity of the attack suggests an animal may have been responsible. Officials are asking for anyone who may have seen any suspicious behavior in the park area - to contact the sheriff's office..."

A few days have passed and the town continues to mourn for the lost of their golden teenager. Even the students weeper for their fallen friend and rumors started to aggressively float around. Especially with Christina Wendall spreading more of the werewolf rumors about Peter.

Peter stood in the hallway with Celena and Viktor, watching everyone talking about him, including Christina and the Sworn Sisters.

"Bet he knows something about it. Gypsy creep."

Peter rolls his eyes as he hears the girls talking about him and Celena glares at them. "What are you lesbos looking at?" Celena asks loudly. "What? Want to munch on my clam or something? Get the fuck out of here!" She paces towards them and yells in their face.

The Sworn Sisters were startled by Celena's attitude and pulls on Christina to get out of there.

"Come on."

"Fucking sluts." Celena growls and walks back over to Peter as he frowns at her.

"What?" She scoffs and shrugs.

"That didn't really help. But, thanks anyway." Peter gives her a crooked smile.

Celena laughs softly, "Just hate bullies." She shoulder bumps him and the three of them began to head for their classes, but the whispering still didn't stop.

"That's the guy you think is a werewolf?"

Peter caught someone asking Christina that question, he begins to regret even telling Christina that day, but he didn't expect anyone to believe it. This was the era where people don't believe in the supernatural. They even know Twilight is fake. But, with the attack on that girl and the rumors now. Even if they don't believe in werewolves, it still makes Peter a target as a killer.

As the day slowly goes by, Peter and Celena walked through the hallways, catching several students and teachers in the classroom, joining hands and sharing a prayer.

"In the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them to living fountains of waters: And God..." The teacher stops and looks out the door, catching Celena and Peter watching them. Sending a look of disgust and hate towards them.

Peter pulls Celena away and walks with her down the hall, towards the gym where the Principal called for everyone to join him. On the way, Peter catches a whiff of a familiar scent and looks up to see Roman Godfrey chattering with some guy while smoking a cigarette. It looked like a drug deal going on. Celena looks over her shoulder and sees Matt coming towards them and looks up to where they were looking at.

Celena scoffs silently, "That's Roman Godfrey. Shelley's brother. The asshole I told you about." She whispers to Matt.

Matt snorts as he studies Roman. Watching him take a ounce of coke from the guy and bro-fists him.

"All right, man." Roman says and puffs out a ring of smoke, but frowns when he senses something. He looks down below and only sees students walking by, but he saw a familiar curve of an ass walking away. He smirks to himself, knowing it was Celena.

Students filled the bleachers, but Celena, Matt, and Viktor stood near the locker room doors. Celena could see a few students whispering and pointing at her and Viktor. Mostly Viktor. She bets her last dollar that most of the students think Viktor could have done it and that pissed her off.

"Tonight's vigil for Brooke Bluebell will be held at Penrose High Stadium. Hemlock High students are encouraged to attend. It'll be at 7 o'clock tonight. Thank you."

After school, Peter and Lynda roamed around the property, destroying any evidence of wolves in their area. Anything that could lure the police or the town hunters towards Peter. Celena, Viktor, and Matt volunteered to help out. Matt was still trying to wrap his head around with the fact that Peter was a werewolf.

"Ok, let me get this straight. So, Peter is a werewolf and they exist. And, that Roman guy, he's a Upir which is a Russian Vampire?" Matt tries to put it all together again.

"Ukraine, but yeah." Celena mutters and nods, scratching her head.

"Ukraine. Ok. This is absolutely nuts. You know that? Absolutely fucking nuts. When you guys suggested this place, I was picturing a nice, quiet town. Now, we're involved with others who's got the cops and half of the town sniffing around. We can't stay here." Matt states.

"We can't leave either." Celena argues.

"Yes, we can. Just...poof...we fly away and live somewhere else." Matt says.

"Have you ever noticed that we might be tired of running? I actually like it here. Despite how the people are, I like it." Celena says.

"Why? Is it because of..." Matt nods at Peter who stood several feet away with Lynda.

When Celena didn't answer, Matt sighs in disappointment.

"And I like Shelley." Viktor announces suddenly, then blushes.

Celena lifts her brows in surprise, surprised with that he just admitted it out loud.

"We actually have good friends here, Matt. Friends we can trust. Shelley doesn't know about me, but one day I want to tell her. I know I can trust her. " Viktor adds.

"Trust is a little fragile right now, Vik. After everything that has happened to us before. It's still a little shaky for me. I trust you guys though with my life, but if you guys trust them...I can try and do the same. It'll take time."

Celena smiles and takes is hand, Viktor stands and place his large hand on top of theirs.

"One day at a time."

Viktor lets go to pull them both in for a hug, their heads hitting each other's.

"Ow!" "Ouch!" They laughed and hugged one another, then walked over towards Peter and Lynda. Lynda sends Celena a smile and wraps her arm around her, patting her back.

Peter stomps on a wolf's paw print and sighs in annoyance. He knows for a fact that he didn't kill that girl and whatever or whoever killed that girl was powerful and strong.

"Could an upir have done it?" Peter asks Lynda.

Celena frowns, "I thought you said Roman didn't know what he was." That kinda startled her. Why was she defending someone who annoyed her?

"I was assuming, but if he's playing possum..." Peter says, but Lynda speaks up.

"It's not their style usually. And I think Celena's right. Roman might not know what he is, which means he's still near the stage of learning. He's a halfling." Lynda shrugs.

"Halfling? So his mother...or father...?" Celena trails off.

"Mother." Lynda says.

Viktor turned so white, he could be mistaken for a ghost, "And Shelley doesn't know since she's human or she knows and has a good reason to be scared shitless of her mother."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the Godfrey Mansion, Roman arrived home and walked into his kitchen to grab a quick drink from the fridge. He sighs as the image of Celena invaded his mind. He just couldn't get that girl out of his mind. It was driving him nuts. When he shuts the fridge, his mother comes in.
"The vigil being held later tonight your sister would like to attend." Olivia states.
"Pass. I've spent all day around fucking crying girls." Roman scoffs as he sips hos beer.
Olivia gives him a scornful look, but then softens her gaze in curiosity, "Did you know her?"
Roman rolls his eyes, "Didn't think there was a pair of pom-poms in a within your purview." He says sarcastically, but watches her give him a cold look. "I didn't know her. Different crowd, I guess." Roman shrugs and sips his juice.
Olivia walks up to him and gently strokes his face as a mother would do, "How are you, darling?"
Roman shrugs again, "I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be fine?" Confused with her mood swings, but he should expect it, especially with his mother.
"Do you see me as someone you can trust?" She, suddenly, asks him.
He frowns at her, "Yeah." Then walks up to his room.
As he sits in his room, he begins to go through Brooke's Facebook pictures. He did know her, not like a friend. But, she was one of the many women in Hemlock Grove that he slept with. He stops at a picture of himself and her together at a bar they hanged out at on the night they first had sex. It was a weird feeling for Roman, to hear a person he knew has died.
Suddenly, Roman types in Celena's name in the Facebook search. Strangely, he couldn't find her page. That confused him. What kind of teenager doesn't have a Facebook page? He drew more and more curious about her by the minute. But, his mind went back to the girl, Brooke. Something was telling him he should do something. Maybe go to the park and, who knows, maybe find clues that those dumb rent a cops can't find. That feeling deep inside him told him to go to the park.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Peter needed answers to figure out a way to clear his name. Any proof to show that he didn't kill that girl. Pete called Celena and asked he to meet him at the park. So, after sneaking out and knowing that he was gonna worry Lynda deeply, he heads off to the park with Brook was killed to find anything to give him a sign of what killed the girl.

Peter jumps when he hears a loud, sonic boom and sees Celena landing on the ground.

"You gotta stop doing that. Did you fly in?" He asks sarcastically.

"Yep. Pretty much." She says and walks over to the park. Leaving a shocked Peter standing in the grass.

Peter snaps out of it and paces towards her, "Wait, you left out the part that you can fly."

"If we concentrate hard enough, we can use our power to fly. Over time, it gets easy. Believe me..." She laughs and stops in her tracks to face him. "It was not easy to learn when we first discovered we could do it." She says and turns to the park. "So, where do we start?" She asks.

Peter snaps out of his shock and goes back to looking for anything he could find. He walks over to the little playhouse where they found her. Celena squats down next to him. Seeing the dried blood and claw marks made from human nails. Celena shivers at the chilling vibe that was still in the air around them. It was as if you could still feel the terror that girl carried. Hear her screams of agony. Peter gets up, but Celena stays to look further. He goes over to the sand, sniffing for any scent he could find, scan for any tracks. But, too many humans infested the park. He could barely catch the killer's whiff. But, something was there. Something...not human.

He sigh in disappointment and turns towards Celena and watches her look up into the sky. The vigil was happening right now and everyone who was there were releasing the paper lanterns into the sky, lighting up heaven all over town. Celena looks in awe at how similar it looked.

"Jellyfishes in the sky." She says softly.

Peter was startled with what she just said, "What?"

She shrugs, "Just something I've been dreaming about lately. Thousands of glowing jellyfishes flying in the night's sky. That's what this reminds me of."

His eyes widen in complete shock, "What else did you dream about?"

"It's just a dream." She frowns in confusion with his attitude.

"Tell me." He demands.

She jumps at his tone, "Um, Ouroboros. I dreamed of a snake eating it's own tail. A triangle or a pyramid with a moon at the top with..."

"...an angel and a wolf at the corners?" He asks, but the look of her face answers that for him.

Her eyes widen, "How did you know that?"

"I've been seeing the same thing in my dreams." He states, scratching his beard nervously.

"How is this possible?" She asks as he looks everywhere, but her.

He shakes his head and shrugs, "I'm not sure. But, that mystery is for another day. First, we need to figure out about the killer. From what I can tell...it's definitely an animal, but something's off. I can't really describe it. It's more of a feeling than a scent or a track."

Celena sighs softly and looks around more, but jumps at the sound of an angry voice behind them.

"What did it feel like?"

They turn around and see an angry Roman glaring at them, mainly at Peter.

"What did what feel like?" Peter holds his hands out that says he was completely clueless.

"Killing that girl."
