Chapter 27

More people started gathering in the kitchen so I walked out and wandered around the house. People bumped into me from left to right and I was having a hard time keeping my balance.

I found the back door and decided to go outside since it was way too stuffy and crowded in here. Walking outside, I took a deep breath of fresh air. I looked around the backyard and saw a group of people circled around a small fire. They were laughing and drinking together.

I sighed and sat on the wall. Looking up at the sky, I smiled at the stars. There weren't many, but there was enough to notice.

I felt myself tear up as I remembered the date I went on with Zayn and how we walked to the park and looked up at the stars as we stood on the bridge. I remember that night so clearly. I had a great time with him, just sitting in that restaurant talking and laughing.

A tear ran down my cheek and I quickly wiped it away. How did I come to this? Why do I have to feel this way? For the two weeks we've been apart, my insides feel twisted up. I haven't left the house except for going to school, and I barely left my room when I was home. I feel too sick to eat and the only thing I can do right is cry. I know Tyler has been worried and so has my friends. I'm probably here at this stupid party right now because they wanted me to get out of the house.

I really wish things could be different. I wish Zayn could've just told me the truth. I wish my friends accepted him when we were together. I wish Dad didn't abuse me. And I wish mom was still alive.

I hate my life. It's all been ruined since the day mom died.

But I felt like something was right with my life when Zayn suddenly came into it. But of course that was ruined too.

And his words keep replaying in my head like a broken record.

I love you.

I sometimes wonder if he was telling the truth. But then I remember the look in his eyes and the pain. He meant it. And that makes it worse.

I don't know how to feel. But I have this unknown feeling in my chest. It's been there for a while but it wasn't as strong as it's been since the day Zayn confessed his love for me. I don't know how to describe this feeling, but it hurts.

I felt more tears stream down my face. I dropped my head in my hands and wiped away the tears.

I can't even get through this party without crying.

"Hey. Are you okay?"

My head snapped up to see a guy standing in front of me. He had dirty blonde hair styled into a quiff and a lip ring. He was really tall as he towered over me. He looked at me with confusion as he held a beer in his hand.

"Um."

I didn't know how to answer that question. And I wasn't going to explain my situation to this stranger.

"I'm Luke," he smiled politely and held out his hand for me to shake.

"Emily," I responded and shook his hand. He dropped his hand back down to his side and then looked a little nervous as he bit his lip.

"So, are you okay?"

"Not really," I said truthfully.

"There's no chance you might want to talk about it," he said but it sounded more like a question.

"No."

"Right," he nodded. "Well, a couple of us are hanging around that fire over there if you want to join."

I glanced at the people circled around the fire. Some of them looked at us questionably.

"I don't know."

"Well, the offer still stands if you want to join later."

I nodded and he gave me one more smile before turning around and walking back over to his friends.

I sighed and looked down at my lap.

I'm supposed to be having fun. That's why I'm here. I shouldn't push away opportunities of having a good time. I'll take Eleanor's advice and forget about Zayn for tonight. I'll forget about my problems.

I stood up and walked over to Luke and his friends. Luke was sitting in a folding chair laughing at something that was said when he looked up and saw me approaching him.

"Changed your mind?" he asked. I nodded and he gestered to the empty chair next to him.

I sat down and all eyes were on me. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea.

"Luke, aren't you going to introduce us to your lady friend?" One of the guys asked. He had black hair with a blonde streak and a kind smile.

"This is Emily. Emily, these are my friends Calum, Michael, Ashton, Zoe, James, and Rachael," Luke pointed to everyone as he named them.

"Hey," I waved.

"You can't be shy if you're hanging out with us," James commented.

"Don't mind him, he's a jerk," Rachael said to me. I glanced back at James and he only shrugged.

Michael reached into the cooler that was next to him and pulled out a beer.

"Want one?" he asked me. I nodded and grabbed the bottle from him, opening it and taking a sip.

"Ah, so you do drink. I was hoping you weren't one of those girls who think they can come to parties and not drink," Zoe laughed.

I didn't say anything, only took another sip.

"You're a very quiet person, Emily," Ashton said.

"Oh, leave her alone," Luke told his friends.

They went to talking amongst themselves and I felt better now that all that attention wasn't on me anymore.

A cold breeze blew by and I shivered, not having a jacket on.

"Are you cold?" Luke asked me.

"Yeah. A little."

"Do you want to go back inside?"

"Sure."

We both stood up and I walked back to the house. I opened the door and looked behind me for Luke but he wasn't there. He was talking to Calum.

Calum said something to Luke, glanced at me and laughed afterwards. Luke then smacked him upside the head and came towards me.

He smiled and opened the door, allowing me to walk in first. The atmosphere quickly warmed me up as Luke and I pushed passed the mass of people. We went into the living room and stood by the wall.

"Want to play?" Luke asked and pointed to the corner of the room.

In the corner, was a table with plastic cups set on top. A few people surrounded it while they threw balls into the cups.

"Uh, I don't know."

"Come on," Luke smiled, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the table.

We stood beside the table and watched people play.

"Do you two want to get in?" a guy asked Luke and I.

"Yeah. We'll play next round," Luke responded.

The guy threw the ball to a cup on the other side of the table but he missed. A girl handed him a shot and he threw his head back as he drank it.

After he finished, he turned to us.

"Your turn," he said. "Are you two on the same team?"

"Sure," Luke nodded.

I turned to Luke and he looked down at me.

"I don't know how to play," I said quietly.

"Don't worry, it's simple." He stood at one end of the table and pointed to the cups arranged in a triangle on the opposite side of the table.

"Now, there's many ways to play Beer Pong, but I think they're doing it this way. You have to try to get these balls into those cups. If you miss, you have to take a shot. If you don't miss, you don't take a shot. Simple."

"Okay," I nodded. Luke smiled and was handed a few ping pong balls. He aimed and threw one. It landed in a cup and he smirked.

"You seem like you know what you're doing," I commented as I watched him throw another ball into a cup.

"I've had a lot of practice," he shrugged.

He aimed for the third time but missed. The people watching seemed to like that as they laughed and cheered.

Luke was handed a shot and he drank it with ease. Then it was a different guy's turn. I learned his name was Zack since everyone was cheering him on.

He threw the ball and it missed. He took a shot and looked at me.

"You're up."

I looked at Luke who nodded and I stepped up to the table. Grabbing one of the ping pong balls, I took aim and threw it to one of the cups. It surprisingly landed in it and Luke clapped.

I grinned and grabbed another ball, took aim, and threw. But I missed and was handed a shot.

I stared down at the liquid before closing my eyes and drinking it. It burned as it slid down my throat.

"What is this?" I asked Luke.

"Vodka."

"It stings."

He only chuckled and took the small glass out of my hands.

***

I don't know how long we've been playing this game but I'm not really good at it. I can't count the number of shots I've taken and I feel the buzz of the alcohol.

"I'm bored of playing this game," I pouted.

"Yeah. Me too," Luke replied. He's taken a number of shots as well, but no where near as many as I've had.

"Come on. Let's go," Luke grabbed my hand and pulled me away from the game. He brought me into the kitchen. I jumped up onto the counter and swung my legs over the edge.

"Want something to drink?" Luke asked.

I nodded eagerly and he began to grab multiple drinks.

"What are you making?" I furrowed my eyebrows and tried to look over his shoulder to see what he was doing but he was too tall.

"It's a special drink."

He finished up and smiled as he handed me the concoction.

I smiled and brought the drink up to my lips, taking a sip.

"It's good."

"Why, thank you."

I giggled and drank more. I felt loopy after drinking half of it. My mind was fuzzy but I felt like I had more energy.

I leaped off the counter and suddenly felt like dancing.

"C'mon Luke, let's go dance." I grabbed a hold of his wrist and pulled him through the crowd.

I don't know what I was doing but I just moved to the beat of the music. I swayed my hips and raised my arms above my head.

Luke looked down at me, grinning with a surprised look on his face. He suddenly spun me around so my back was facing him and started moving his hips as he held mine.

"You're quite the dancer," he whispered in my ear. I smirked and moved my hips a little faster for him to groan.

I don't know why or how I'm even doing this. Everything is so fuzzy.

(Zayn's POV)

"Have a drink, Zayn. It'll make you feel better," Harry slurred as he held a beer bottle to my face.

"I'm not feeling it tonight. I think I'm just going to go home."

"You're such a bummer. I brought you here to have fun. You need to move on."

"I can't!" I exclaimed. A few people turned their heads to look at us but soon turned back around.

I sighed. "I have to go, Harry. I can't stay here."

I stood off the couch and began to walk out of the room. Harry leaped from the couch and followed me.

"How about this? Drink a few beers, find a girl, get an empty room, and have fun," Harry winked and laughed, taking another gulp of beer.

"No, Harry."

"Well, how about her?" He asked and pointed to a girl dancing. Her back was facing us and all I could see was that she was wearing a pink dress. I'd be lying if I said she didn't look sexy as she swayed her hips.

"Ooh yeah. She's a good one," Harry said.

She continued dancing and turned around. The air was immediately knocked out if me once I saw her face.

Emily.

I stared at her, wide eyed. She's here. Only a few feet away from me.

"Wait. Is that Emily?" Harry squinted. "Holy crap that is her! Zayn go talk to her!"

"No, Harry. She seems like she's having a good time, I don't want to ruin that. And she was clear she doesn't want me anymore."

"Shut up and go over there."

"Harry-"

"Do you love her?" He asked suddenly, cutting me off.

"What?"

"Do you love Emily?"

"Of course I love her."

"Then go talk to her."

"It's not that simple, Harry."

I looked back at her. She had a wide smile on her face as she danced. But then I noticed she wasn't dancing alone.

She was dancing with Luke. My blood started to boil as I saw his hands on her, holding her hips and kissing her neck.

I looked down, trying to keep calm. I balled my fists to my sides and tried to contain my anger.

No one else is suppose to hold her that way.

"Is that Luke? Oh man, that is! And he's dancing with your girl. Luke's gonna try to get some tonight," Harry chuckled.

After that I couldn't hold it anymore. Just the thought of someone else with her pisses me off.

I pushed Harry out of the way and walked over to them. Pushing Luke off of her, I took Emily's hand and stood in front of her.

Luke regained his balance and looked at me with his eyebrows furrowed.

"What the hell man?!" he exclaimed.

"Don't touch her."

"What? I thought you two broke up."

"Luke, I'm not playing right now."

"Fine damn. Sorry," he scoffed and walked away.

I still held Emily's hand as I turned around to face her. She was grinning and giggling as she looked around and continued to dance.

Dammit she's drunk.

"Emily, stop. Focus," I held her shoulders and turned her head to look at me.

"Zayn!" She laughed.

"Are you okay?"

"Never been better," she slurred.

"You're drunk."

"No. I'm Emily," she said and pointed to herself.

I sighed. I have to take care of her.

"Right. Okay. Come on."

I held her wrist and started to pull her out of the crowd when she snatched her hand away.

"I don't want to go with you! I want to dance," she smiled and started swaying her hips again.

"Come on, Emily." I grabbed her hand again and pulled her out of the crowd and into the kitchen.

I leaned her against the counter and grabbed an empty plastic cup and filled it with water.

"Here. Drink this," I instructed and handed her the cup.

She looked inside the cup then placed it on the counter.

"I don't want water."

"Emily, you need to drink it. It'll make you feel better."

"I want the drink Luke made."

"What drink?" I furrowed my eyebrows.

"His special drink. It was very good and I want more," she smiled.

Damn you Luke.

"No. No more special drink for you." I picked the cup up from the counter and handed it to her again. "Drink it."

She frowned and drank the water. She placed the cup down when she finished and then reached for a beer that was sitting on the table.

I grabbed her wrist and prevented her from taking the beer.

"No more beer. You need to sober up."

"But I don't want to. I want to get wasted and forget about my problems and the pain for tonight. I'm trying to forget about you."

My insides felt like they were being twisted and stabbed. Those words felt like a wall fell on me and crushed all the air out.

She's trying to forget about me. She doesn't care about me anymore.

The kitchen soon started to get crowded with chaos. I took a deep breath, looked back at Emily and took her hand.

I led her out of the crowded room and towards the backdoor. Slidding the doors open, we both stepped out and walked into the backyard.

She had trouble walking as she stumbled across the yard so I helped her sit in a chair with me sitting beside her.

She looked up at the stars and I kept my eyes down at the grass. I rested my elbows on my knees and folded my hands.

I knew she moved on. There's no point in trying if she no longer cares. She wants to forget about me.

I wish I could move on as easily as she has but I love her too much. My love for her is uncomfortably strong even though she feels nothing at all.

I looked up when she shivered. She rubbed her arms and continued looking at the stars. Another cool breeze flew by and she shivered again.

I slipped off my leather jacket and held it up to her.

"Cold?"

She looked at me and nodded. When she leaned forward I helped her put my jacket on. She slipped her arms in and smiled.

"Better?"

She nodded again.

It was quiet again until she giggled and spoke.

"Can I tell you a secret?"

"Um, I guess."

"Okay but you can't tell Zayn. Promise?"

What was in that drink?

I tried not to laugh as I looked at her and nodded. "Okay, I won't tell him."

She grinned and pulled my jacket tighter around her.

"I might love him but I'm not sure yet."

My eyes widened as I stared at her.

"You do?"

"I don't know. Maybe. I can't explain it but I get a painfully good feeling when I think about him or when I'm around him. I don't know what it is. It's confusing," she pouted.

I stayed silent as I stared at her in awe. She only gave me a confused look.

"What?"

I didn't answer her. I don't know what came over me as I gently held her face and leaned forward. I stopped only centimeters away from her lips while I looked at her eyes.

Screw it.

I closed the space between us and placed my lips on her warm ones. I held her cheeks as I kissed her passionately, not really thinking about what I was doing, just how it felt.

Her kiss was a cure, I swear. It took away the amount of pain I felt before I found her. An emptiness was filled.

Her lips molded with mine before I slowly pulled away.

She looked at me with wide, confused eyes.

"Why did you do that?" she asked softly.

"I-I don't know."

She looked down and shook her head then stood up.

"Where are you going?"

"Home. I-I have to get out of here," she rushed and started walking away.

Well she seems to have collected some of her senses back.

"Emily, wait! I'm sorry." I quickly stood up and grabbed her arm, turning her around to face me.

"Let go. I have to go home," she whimpered, trying to get rid of my hold.

"Stop fighting me."

"What do you expect me to do?" she shouted.

"Just listen to me."

"I gave you plenty of time to talk."

"Listen, Emily, I'm sorry."

"That can't fix this."

"What about what you said moments before? Can that fix it?"

"Zayn-"

"No. Do you love me?"

Her eyes widened as she began to tear up.

"Zayn I-"

"Just tell me! Look at me in the eye and tell me you love me or you feel absolutely nothing," I said beginning to become frustrated and desperate for her answer.

"I don't know!" she exclaimed, not being able to fight the tears anymore as they slid down her rosy cheeks.

"I'm confused, Zayn. And I don't know how or what to feel."

"Do you feel anything at all?" I asked in a shaky voice.

She looked at me and was silent for a few moments.

"Yes."

I took a deep breath and felt better from her answer.

"But I don't know about us, Zayn. I don't know what to do with us."

"Why can't you just come back to me? I miss you, Emily."

"I can't, Zayn. I'm sorry. Not right now."

"Why not?"

She escaped my grasp and wiped some of her tears away.

"I have to go," she said and stumbled back in the house.

"Emily! Wait, please," I called out to her and ran after her. I went inside and scanned the area but I couldn't see her.

I pushed people out of my way, not caring who it was. I went to the living room but I didn't see her. I frantically searched the house before going outside.

I opened the front door and saw her and Luke. She climbed into his car with him doing the same.

I ran out to the car but Luke had already started backing up.

"Emily, wait! Please!"

But they were already half way down the street. I watched as Luke drove her away from me.

"I love you," I whispered.
