Chapter 23

I rested my head on Zayn's chest as we stared out onto the lake. It was really beautiful; the sun hit the water just right and the clear blue sky made the atmosphere more calming.

Zayn had his arm wrapped around my waist as he drew patterns onto my back, with his chin resting on top of my head.

We were in the woods at the lake Zayn took me to a while ago. The man that I saw that day still frightens me and the more I think about it, the more I start to question if the man that stopped me on the street was the one I saw here.

I still haven't told Zayn about that unfortunate encounter. I just keep thinking about it. What consequences will Zayn have if he doesn't pay?

It still upsets me that Zayn won't tell me what's really going on with him, and I just wish he would open up to me.

I've opened up to him and told him things I haven't told anyone, but yet he can't tell me this one simple thing.

I try not to think about it often but I can't help it. I was almost raped by a man that is in the same business as Zayn and I deserve to know what he does.

But as I lay on Zayn and stare at the cool water, those thoughts disappear for now.

"I like it here."

Zayn hums in agreement and kisses the top of my head. We sat in a comfortable silence before I got a great idea.

I sat up and looked down at Zayn's confused face.

"Let's go in the water," I grinned.

"You're kidding."

I stood up fully and took my shoes off.

"Come on, let's go for a swim."

"Uh..."

I started to unbutton my pants before I became self conscience and stopped my actions.

I shyly peeked at Zayn and saw the smirk he wore.

"I don't mind."

I scoffed and crossed my arms, raising an eyebrow.

"What?" he said, trying not to smile.

"Close your eyes."

"But-"

"I said close them."

"Fine," he agreed and closed his eyes.

I looked at him skeptically to make sure he wasn't peeking before stripping off the remainder of my clothing until I was only wearing my bra and underwear. It was the closest thing I had to a bikini at the moment.

"Can I open my eyes now?"

"No."

I placed my clothes in a pile then walked to the water's edge. I stuck my toe in the water then quickly took it out because of the cold temperature.

"You have a nice arse."

"Zayn!"

"Oh right, sorry."

I looked back over at him to see his eyes were once again closed. I then returned my attention back to the water and took a deep breath before making the mistake of jumping in.

Once my head reached the surface I gasped for air and shivered. The water was harshly cold as my teeth clancked together.

I looked over at Zayn who's eyes were now open as he stood up.

"You should come in."

"Um, no."

"Why not?" I fake pouted. He chuckled but still didn't make an effort to join me.

I smirked when I thought of the reason.

"Zayn, can you swim?"

His eyes widened but he quickly covered up with clearing his throat.

"Of course I can. I just don't want to go in the water."

"Aw, my bad boy can't swim."

"Don't tease me."

"Come in, please?"

He sighed and took off his leather jacket and white t-shirt, revealing his many tattoos. He then reached down and took off his shoes before wiggling out of his black skinny jeans, leaving him in only his black boxers.

He placed them in a pile beside my clothes then repeated my earlier actions and walking to the water's edge and dipping his foot in.

He quickly withdrew his foot and furrowed his eyebrows.

"Hell no, I'm not going in there. It's freezing!"

"You'll get used to it."

He mumbled something before slowly walking in until the water reached his knees.

"Are you happy now? I'm in the water."

I giggled and swam over to him. He kept his eyes on me as I stood in front of him and wrapped my arms around his waist.

"I'll teach you."

"What?"

"I'll teach you how to swim."

He looked hesitant so I grabbed his hand and slowly walked backwards, further into the water.

When the water reached his waist his eyes widened with panic and he yanked his hand out of mine.

"Zayn, it's okay. You'll be fine."

"No, no, I can't do this."

"Yes you can. It's simple." I showed him how he should move his arms and legs.

"See? Just do that."

He started to move his arms and legs the way I showed him as I watched.

"You're getting it."

"This is embarrassing," he mumbled and I laughed.

He stopped his movements and came closer to me. I stopped laughing and looked up at him as he stood close enough for our chests to be touching.

He reached for my hand and intertwined our fingers with his left hand while he cupped my cheek with his right. He caressed my cheek softly before leaning in and connecting our lips. The flame ignited within me as our lips moved together in sync.

I placed my hand on his hip while he bit down on my bottom lip, asking for entrance, which I gladly accepted.

Zayn moaned in my mouth as I brought my hand up to his hair and pulled. He brought me closer to him and lightly squeezed the back of my thighs indicating for me to jump. I jumped and wrapped my legs around his waist, and my arms around his neck as he held the bottom of my thighs.

He kissed me harder until we felt ourselves leaning over. I squealed as both of us fell beneath the water. I quickly rose out of the water and Zayn soon followed as I pushed my hair out of my face.

I started to laugh at our clumsy actions, and Zayn joined me. He ran his fingers through his hair before gripping me by my hips and pulling me towards him.

We calmed down our laughter and Zayn placed our foreheads together as I layed my hands on his chest. I closed my eyes for a moment and when I reopened them I was met with a pair of beautiful chocolate colored eyes.

He gave me his genuine smile -which I loved- and kissed my cheek.

"You're so beautiful," Zayn said softly as he tucked some of my hair behind my ear.

I gave him a small smile before resting my head on his shoulder, gently kissing his neck as he held me closer to him.

We stayed like that just enjoying the beautiful moment between us before it became too cold for us to be in the water any longer.

"Come on, let's go dry off."

I followed Zayn out of the water and shivered as a cool breeze whipped by. We sat on a rock and stared out onto the lake like we did before, drying off. Zayn wrapped his arm around me to try and warm me up as much as possible and I placed my head on his shoulder.

***

When we were dry enough, we collected our clothes and put them back on before hiking out of the woods and back to Zayn's car.

He parked in front of his apartment and we took the elevator up. His door was opened as we both walked in.

"I'm going to take a shower," I announced. He nodded and walked into his room as I travelled to the bathroom.

I turned on the water and waited for it to heat up before undressing and stepping into the shower. The water rained down on me as I grabbed soap and started to wash my body.

I smiled as I thought of the moments only before back at the lake. The way he held me and kissed me, it always makes me feel special.

I don't know what it is with Zayn but over the past two months and a half, I've grown attached to him. Whenever I see him or touch him or kiss him, I get this weird feeling that I don't know how to describe. He makes my heart flutter, the room feels hotter, and all I can do is admire him.

Aside from his secret, I feel safe with Zayn. He protects me and shows me he cares about me like no one else has. With his warm touches and gentle kisses, I feel at peace.

Once I finished I turned the water off and wrapped a towel around myself as I stepped out.

I smiled as I saw a pair of Zayn's clothes sitting on the counter. I quickly dried off and put my bra back on before looking at the items of clothing.

There sat a pair of Zayn's black boxers, sweatpants, and a dark t-shirt.

I slid the boxers up my legs along with the sweatpants before pulling the oversized t-shirt over my head. I brushed my hair then walked out of the bathroom and into the living room where I found Zayn comfortably sitting on the couch as he surfed through channels.

He looked up from the TV when he heard me enter and smiled.

"You look better in them then me," he gestered to his clothes I was wearing.

I sheepishly smiled as he stood from the couch and walked up to me. He placed a kiss to my forehead and handed me the remote.

"I'm going to take a shower now. You can watch whatever you want. I won't take long."

I nodded as he walked past me and into the bathroom. I took a seat on the couch and looked through the channels like Zayn was doing before I interrupted.

I looked over at the time that read 10:30. I don't know where the time went.

I huffed when I was unable to find anything interesting to watch after fifteen minutes. I threw the remote to the other side of the couch and stared at the television when Zayn's phone vibrated from the coffee table.

I leaned forward and grabbed the phone. I didn't want to be nosy but I was curious.

It was a text from someone named John. My eyebrows were furrowed in confusion as I opened the text message and read what was just sent.

John: Friday at 4:00 behind the old firehouse. Don't be late.

What the hell is this? What's happening on Friday?

I stared at the text in confusion until I heard Zayn's footsteps coming down the hallway.

My eyes widened as I quickly turned the phone off and placed it back on the table before fumbling with the remote to make it look like I was still looking for something to watch.

He walked in just as I grabbed the remote and smiled at me. His hair was still damp and he wore a white t-shirt and dark sweatpants.

I smiled at him as he sat down beside me.

"Did you find anything good?" He gestered to the TV.

I tried to act normal although I was still nervous and confused about the mysterious text Zayn received.

"No, nothing." Zayn nodded and grabbed his phone from the coffee table. A frown formed on his face as he read the text.

"Something wrong?"

Zayn looked up and smiled as he put his phone back down.

"No. Everything's fine," he lied.

"Okay." I looked back at the TV and continued looked for a movie I might be interested in until I found something that caught my eye.

A thriller called "Dark Skies" was about to play in a few minutes. I decided to watch it and clicked on the play button.

"What's this?" Zayn asked.

"I don't know but it looks interesting." He nodded and I stood up.

"I'll go get the popcorn," I told him before walking into the kitchen and taking the microwavable popcorn out of the cabinet and placing it inside the microwave. I set the timer and sat on the counter as the corn started to pop.

What did Zayn have to do at 4:00 on Friday? Who's John? And what's happening behind the old firehouse?

I became more confused with every question that swarmed through my head. None of this makes any sense.

When the timer beeped I hopped off the counter, grabbed the popcorn and poured it all into a bowl before walking back into the living room.

It looked like Zayn was responding to the message before he heard me enter and placed the phone where it was before.

I turned off the lights to give the room a more scary vibe before sitting down next to Zayn and placed the bowl of popcorn on my lap.

Zayn smiled down at me as he played the movie and grabbed a handful of popcorn.

***

Why did I want to watch this?

The movie was almost over and I was basically on Zayn's lap with a pillow in front of my face. Zayn's arm was wrapped around me as he laughed at how scared I was.

I peeked over the pillow and screamed when I saw the mother slowly walking down the dark hallway to her room as the tall slender alien slowly creeped behind her.

"Oh my God, it's behind you! No, don't leave your kids! Oh my God," I yelled at the TV. I put the pillow back over my face as my head was on Zayn's chest.

I screamed and burried my head in Zayn's shoulder as he laughed at me.

"How does this not scare you? You haven't jumped once," I asked.

"That's because I'm tough," he smirked and winked at me which made me laugh.

The movie continued as I kept the pillow in the way of my view.

"Will you stop hiding behind the pillow. You can't see what's going on that way," Zayn chuckled.

"That's kind of the point." Zayn removed the pillow and rolled his eyes at me.

I looked back at the TV and was shocked to see the aliens circling the older boy before they took him away.

"I didn't see that coming," Zayn commented.

My eyes were wide as I stared at the television, waiting for what would happen next. But thankfully there were no more alien scenes and the movie soon ended.

"See that wasn't so bad? I actually liked it," Zayn said.

"Yeah well you can watch that on your own next time."

Zayn laughed and scooped me up then stood up from the couch. I squealed as I cluched onto his shirt and neck, not wanting to fall.

"I'm not going to drop you," he chuckled.

I loosened my grip as Zayn walked into his bedroom and placed me on the center of his bed. He crawled up the bed before he was above me with his hands on both sides of my head and his knees on both sides of my thighs.

"Were you really that scared?"

I nodded as Zayn leaned down closer until I could feel his breath fan my face.

"There's nothing to be afraid of, baby. I'm right here. I wouldn't let anything happen to you," he whispered as we held eye contact.

I couldn't help but think his words had another meaning. I know Zayn will protect me from anything, but was he also talking about the people he's involved with?

Zayn's hot breath hit my face again as he exhaled. I reached up and hooked my hand around his neck, slowly pulling him forward and closing my eyes when I felt our lips touch.

Zayn closed the remaining space between us as he kissed me. The kiss was slow at first but then it became more hungry.

His hands roamed my body as my hands stayed in his hair. His left hand gripped my hip as his right hand travelled up my shirt. He stopped just below my breast and started to kiss down my neck.

I moaned as he sucked just below my jaw. He smirked and sucked the spot harder, biting and tugging on the skin. I hissed as he finished his work, gently kissing the love bite.

He continued kissing down my neck, peppering kisses all over. He then brought his face back up to mine and looked at me with those eyes I love.

He placed his forehead on mine and sighed and then rewarded me with a wonderful smile.

I smiled and pecked his lips before he layed down beside me. He pulled the blanket over us and wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him. My head rested on his chest and his rested on mine.

"Go to sleep, baby. It's late."

I nodded and soon feel asleep to the sound of Zayn's heartbeat.

***

I shot up in bed with tear stained cheeks and breathing heavy. I placed my hand over my heart as I tried to control my breathing. Blinking the tears away and pushing my hair out of my face, I sat up and put my head in my hands.

The sun was shining through the window, blinding me for a few seconds before I adjusted to the light.

I felt a body stir beside me until Zayn sat up and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes before turning to me. He noticed my wet cheeks and his eyes immediately filled with worry and concern.

"Emily, what's wrong?"

I took a deep breath and released it.

"I'm fine, it was just another nightmare," I sighed. I've been getting them a lot lately.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"No, Zayn. I'm fine."

"It's okay if you do-"

"I said I'm fine!" I snapped at him. He looked confused and shocked by my sudden outburst and I put my head in my hands again.

"I'm sorry," I apologized.

"Don't worry about it. I'll go get you some water." He kissed my forehead before untangling himself from the blankets and walking out of the room.

He came back moments later with a glass of water and handed it to me. I thanked him then took the glass and drank the cool water.

Zayn sat next to me on the bed and leaned against the headboard while I layed in his arms. He rubbed unknown patterns into my back with his finger to calm me down.

We sat there for about half an hour before Zayn spoke.

"What was your life like with your mum?"

I stiffened and shook my head.

"I don't really want to talk about it."

"It's okay, you can tell me anything."

This got me angry at how ironic it was. I sat up so I wasn't laying in his arms and looked at him.

"Really? And what about you, huh? Why can't you tell me everything?"

He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion before he realized what I was talking about.

"Emily, that's different-"

"Why? Because it has to deal with you?"

"No. It's for your protection."

I scoffed and stood up.

"I'm so sick of hearing that. I'm always being told that's it's for my protection and I don't want to hear it anymore."

I grabbed my pile of clothes and went into the bathroom to change.

"Emily, what are you doing?" Zayn knocked on the door. I quickly took his clothes off me and replaced them with my own.

After sliding my shirt over my torso, I opened the door to the bathroom, which made Zayn stumble back, and walked to the living room.

"Emily, wait."

"No, Zayn. You never tell me anything about yourself while I'm expected to just tell you anything you want to know. Well, I'd like to know a few things too, Zayn, but for some reason you're unable to open up to me."

"That's not it-"

"Then tell me what it is," I said and turned around to face him. He just stood there, silent, and looked at the floor.

"Exactly." Zayn looked up at me from the floor and looked angry.

"Why are you always nagging me about this? Why are you so desperate to know?" He yelled.

"Because it's obvious that whatever you're involved with isn't right."

"And how would you know?"

"Because I followed you to that warehouse, Zayn." His eyes widened. "Yeah, that's right, I followed you. And I know that whatever it is that you and Harry are involved in is illegal."

Zayn opened his mouth but I cut him off.

"Go ahead and tell me it's not. Tell me it's not illegal. Go on, say it."

But he didn't, he only stood there staring at me.

"Why would you follow me?"

"Because I couldn't get answers from you. I wanted to trust you and believe you but you gave me no reason to."

He looked hurt and I started to feel bad but I couldn't. I have to let him know.

"So no, Zayn. I won't tell you about my past because you won't tell me about yours."

I collected my phone and keys from the coffee table and then walked out the door.

***

I walked out of English class as quickly as possible and made my way down the hall.

"Emily."

I didn't stop or turn around when he called my name.

"Emily, please wait." He grabbed my arm and turned me around to face him.

"What?"

"Can we just talk about this?"

"No, Zayn. I'm done talking."

I released his hold on me.

"Stop running away from me," he said in annoyance.

"Just leave me alone, okay? I need space."

I walked away from him and further down the hall. When I looked up I saw Liam standing by his locker with his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"What was that all about?" he asked.

"Nothing."

"Did you two just break up?"

I sighed. "I don't know," I said honestly.

"So you guys are fighting?"

"Yes, Liam. Anything else?" I became annoyed at all his questions.

He put his hands up in mock surrender.

"Sorry, didn't mean to ask so many questions."

I sighed again for what felt like the tenth time today.

"I know, Liam. I'm sorry. I'm just frustrated."

He nodded and we started walking down the hall.

"So, how's everyone?" I asked, to take the attention off of me.

"Um, they're okay, I guess."

I nodded.

"I haven't seen Danielle with the group. Is she all right?"

Liam sighed and looked down at his feet as he walked.

"We actually um, broke up."

"Oh, Liam, I'm so sorry. What happened?"

"She said she found someone else. Some guy named Scott," he shrugged.

"Well, how are you doing?" I placed my hand on his shoulder for comfort.

"I'll be alright." I nodded and the bell rang. We said our goodbyes and walked to our seperate classes.

***

I layed on my bed and stared up at the ceiling.

It's Friday, and I can't get that text out of my mind. I looked over at the clock which read 3:45.

This could be my only way of knowing what Zayn does, what he's not telling me or anyone else.

Friday at 4:00 behind the old firehouse. Don't be late.

I huffed as I stood up and grabbed my jacket before exiting my room and swiftly going down the stairs.

Tyler was seated on the couch as he scrolled through his phone.

"Can I borrow your car?" I asked.

"For what?"

"Thanks." I grabbed his keys and went outside to his car. I climbed in and started the engine then took down the street.

I drove for about ten minutes until I parked at the old firehouse. It was never rebuilt after being burned down two years ago.

I looked at the time. 3:57.

Do I really want to know? What if Zayn's right and it's best if I don't know anything? Will my safety be at risk after finding out?

I quickly shook the thoughts away and opened the car door. I closed it behind me before walking to the side of the firehouse and slowly making my way to the back.

As I got closer I heard loud cheering and people yelling. I looked around the corner and saw a large group of people circled around two others.

I was able to make out curly brown hair from the crowd and knew that Zayn couldn't be far.

The crowd seperated a little for me to see the two people they were watching. A man with blonde hair was knocked to the ground by a forceful punch to the jaw.

I easily recognized the outstretched arm of tattoos and immediately knew who threw the punch.

Zayn stood towering over the man before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand and walking away from the man on the ground and out of the crowd.

Zayn fights? Is this what this is?

There were three men standing a few feet away from the crowd who seemed to be intently watching. Zayn walked over to them and said something I couldn't make out. The man in the middle smirked before reaching into his jacket and pulling out a package.

Zayn took it and checked inside before closing it back up and giving them a single nod. He turned away from them and looked up to be met with my fearful eyes.

My eyes widened from being seen and his widened with shock. I quickly went back around the corner and to Tyler's car.

I heard quick footsteps and my name being called before a hand enclosed around mine and turned me around.

Zayn's eyes were wide with confusion, fear, and a hint of anger.

"What-What are you doing here?" he asked.

"So that's what you do? You fight? You're some type of street fighter?"

"Emily-"

"No, Zayn, don't say anything. I've heard enough from you." I looked down at the package in his hand and pointed at it. "And what's that? Please don't tell me it's drugs."

He shook his head. "No, it's not drugs. It's money."

I shook my head and turned around to walk away but he stopped me again.

"You followed me? Again?!"

"Yes, Zayn, I did. Because you left me no choice!"

"So you don't trust me."

"No, Zayn. I don't."

He looked hurt and we stood in silence for a little bit.

I sighed and thought that I mind as well tell him.

"Someone stopped me on the street a few weeks ago. They told me to tell you to pay up or else there would be consequences. But I never told you."

"Why?"

"I don't know. But I do know that I'm some how apart of this, those people you're involved with know about me and I'm not safe."

"I wouldn't let them do anything to you."

I shook my head. "You weren't there when that man took me into an alley and started touching me. You didn't stop him, I did. Maybe my friends were right, maybe you are dangerous. Maybe I should've stayed away from you."

"No, Emily. Don't say that-"

"Then what do you want me to say?" I shouted. "You want me to say that what I just saw doesn't matter? That we can get through this? Well I can't. Because it does matter. You could've just told me what was really going on, but you decided not to."

"Because I didn't want you getting hurt!"

"All I wanted you to do was open up to me! To tell me the truth and be honest. But you proved that you can't do that so therefore, I'm done."

"Emily, what are you saying?" His eyes filled with panic.

"We're done, Zayn."

He looked like he just been hit with a brick.

"No, Emily, please."

"You had your chance, Zayn. But I can't go through this anymore. You lied to me."

"Emily, I'm sorry. Just please don't leave me. Please."

"I'm done."

And with those words I went back to the car and drove back home.

After making it back home, I rushed inside and ran upstairs to my room where I shut the door and crumbled to the floor.

The tears spilled out and the pain in my chest increased. I was used to the pain, but I didn't know it could hurt this much.
