Prologue
On the night of March 20, 1972, a young woman gave birth urgently in the infirmary of the Siegburg penitentiary center. Her cries echoed through the usually silent corridors. Every woman in their cells knew her and prayed for her well-being. This event had come too soon, and they hadn't been able to prepare properly.
The prison director approached the bustling infirmary and cracked open the door. He saw the young inmate with her back to him and the two on-duty nurses. He had called someone from social services to register this child.
Soon, the baby's cries could be heard in the room. The nurse held the newborn in her hands after cutting the umbilical cord.
"It's a boy."
The young mother collapsed on the delivery bed, exhausted. They took care of her and her baby so she could finally hold him in her arms. She looked intensely at her crying son. The public service agent, embarrassed to have been awakened in the middle of the night, entered the infirmary.
"Good morning, ma'am. I've come to witness the birth of your baby and register him for his birth certificate."
The young woman, still in a daze, simply nodded. He moved the cap covering the baby's face.
"Well... It's obvious he'll take his father's name: Jaeger. What do you plan to call him?"
She didn't hesitate for a second.
"Eren."
