five: echoes of the past
Hiro shared the only lead had about Tadashi—just the location of his call, which also happened to be where he'd been ambushed.
"I was attacked about a mile from Fred's house, which is why I ran there." Hiro explained, "It's best to start searching around that area."
"Hiro, maybe we should tell the others," GoGo suggested.
"No. I've been playing traumatized for a reason. I don't want to drag anyone else into this."
"You dragged me in," she pointed out.
"Only because you made me and I'm bedridden."
GoGo sighed and sat beside him on the bed. "Look, you said you couldn't do this alone. With the supersuits and the team, we stand a chance. If not, I might end up hospitalized too."
He hadn't considered it from that angle.
"Fine. Only Fred, Wasabi, and Honey. Keep Aunt Cass out of it."
"Agreed. I'll arrange a meeting at Fred's and let them know. Send me that voicemail?"
Hiro nodded and sent it to her. "There's something else I need to tell you since you're my friend again." His voice was softer this time, genuine.
"Hiro, I've always been your friend, no matter what. What's up?" she asked, her concern evident.
"Well... there's this girl..." His voice trailed off.
"Oh my god. Hiro, do you have a girlfriend?" GoGo's excitement was palpable.
"Yeah. Her name's Josie. She dyes her hair wild colors—right now it's blue. She visited me at the hospital after everyone left. She brought be gummy bear and hot chocolate. Then she sang me to sleep when I got tired."
GoGo's smile widened as she listened. "She sounds wonderful."
"She is. I'm telling you this for two reasons: one, she knows everything. Two, she's coming over in ten minutes."
"Oh, do you want me to leave then?"
"Yeah, but I'd like you to meet her first. She's Callaghan's second daughter."
"Whoa, Callaghan has two daughters?" GoGo's shock was evident.
"Yup. Abigail and Josette Callaghan. Callaghan and his wife are divorced. Josie lived with her mom, who just passed away. Abigail's her guardian now."
"So they're nothing like their father?" GoGo asked.
"They're two of the sweetest people you'll ever meet."
"Who's sweet?" a familiar voice called from the top of the stairs.
"Josie! You're here!" Hiro smiled as she walked over to the bed and kissed him on the forehead with her matte black lips. "This is GoGo. She knows everything about my brother now," he explained.
Josie smiled. "Well, I have a new lead. I was snooping around on Dad's old laptop and found a file titled 'Tadashi Hamada.' It's password-protected, but I brought it with me, hoping you could crack it. I know you're probably out of it tonight, but I wanted you to know."
"Josie, you're brilliant!" Hiro said, kissing her.
"Brilliant enough to notice that your friend left without a word?" Josie teased.
He glanced around, realizing GoGo had indeed left. "Well, I guess I wasn't very observant."
Josie laughed softly. "She left with a smile, so you're in the clear."
"Good," he said, his voice slurring as he yawned.
"It's about that time," Josie said, gently laying him back down. As his eyelids grew heavy, she sat beside him, running her fingers through his hair and singing softly. Her beautiful voice was the last thing he heard before drifting off to sleep.
