Short 13: Molting Owl

Author Note: Place Before Helluva Boss: The New Employee Episode 10

One afternoon, outside of an apartment building, Blitz is making his way inside and walks up the stairs to reach Amara's apartment. For some reason, Amara was acting a bit weird over the phone. She acted kind of nervous and asked to take a leave of absence from work for a few weeks. Not that Blitz cares but is concerned when Amara acts all nervous, like something's wrong. He soon walks towards Amara's apartment door and knocks on the door.

Then calls out, "You Amara, are you doing okay?"

Just then, he receives a call on his Hellphone. He looks to see Amara is calling her.

Blitz answers, "What's up, cowgirl?"

"Sorry Blitz, but you can't come in. I'm not doing so well," Amara says.

"Why? You're sick or something?" Blitz asks.

In her room, Amara is practically hiding under the covers of her bed.

Amara answers, "Not really, but I'm afraid I can't go to work for a while. And can I ask you to pick up Roy for a while too."

"I don't know, you're asking a little too much. Are you sure you're not hiding something," Blitz asks, over the phone.

"It's hard to explain, but well, I'm afraid I can't say," Amara says.

"That's okay. I can just see it for myself," Blitz says.

Amara becomes confused, and the cover is suddenly pulled off from her. Amara panics and turns to see Blitz holding the covers.

With a smirk, Blitz says, "There. Now to see what you're hiding... huh?"

To Blitz's surprise, he sees Amara in her pajamas, but notices something off. She has lost patches of feathers on her head as well as some parts on her arms. Amara is so shocked that she lets out a scream in fear and uses her magic to take the covers from Blitz to hide herself in it.

Blitz blinks his eyes a few times and asks, "Uh Amara, what the fuck happened to you?"

But instead of an answer, he hears Amara whimpering, like she's about to cry.

Finally Amara answers in tears, "I was hoping you and the others didn't have to see me during my... my... my molting..."

"Molting?" Blitz asks.

"It's when birds molt their feathers to gain new ones. For normal birds it will take months, but for demons it's usually a few weeks. But still, losing so many patches of my feathers until they grow back, I... I look ridiculous," Amara says.

"Amara, you don't look too bad. I mean, why are you freaking out? I mean, it's not like I'm seeing you naked or something," Blitz says.

But Amara panics, "You don't understand! For bird demons like me, being seen molting is WAY WORSE than being seen naked!"

"You know, you acted just like Stolas when I found out he was molting," Blitz says, walking towards where Amara's head is. Then sits on the bed next to her.

Amara takes a peek from the covers and asks, "You did?"

"Yeah. I was caught off guard at first, but I told him that I understand and don't mind his molting at all. I guess it caught me off guard that you are freaked out about molting, because you usually have a tough personality and not the type to let stuff stop you from doing things. I man, you're as sturdy as Millie, and that's saying something," Blitz says.

Amara says, "I suppose, I just hate molting. I feel really silly looking like this."

"It's actually not that bad. I mean, do your feathers grow back in time?" Blitz replies.

"They would grow back in a few days, but I still don't like it," Amara replies.

"I guess it's understandable," Blitz says, shrugging his shoulders.

Amara sighs, "Still, this is kind of the reason why I didn't want to go to work. I don't want you and the others to see me like this."

"It's actually not that bad if you think about it. I mean, it's just something you and other birds have to deal with. Even I had to go through growing changes when I was your age. And I don't feel like sharing all the details. The point is, you shouldn't worry too much about it," Blitz says.

Amara sighs and says, "I suppose. Aaron kind of told me the same when he found out. I just feel silly with some patches on me."

"Relax, it's actually not that bad. You can wear a jacket, your hat, and stuff to hide the patched and don't give a damn on what others are going to say," Blitz says.

Amara looks at Blitz and says, "I'm surprised. That's actually kind of good advice. I just feel a little silly with the patches on me. I guess I could go back to work."

"That's the spirit. Now come on, work is not going to wait for itself," Blitz says.

"Okay, but..." Amara says.

Then uses her magic to levitate Blitz in the air and has him gently flying out of her room.

"I still wish you would stop breaking into my apartment. And I want you out so that I can get dressed," Amara says.

When Blitz is placed outside his room, she places Blitz on the ground, closes the door and locks it. Amara simply smiles and decides to let the whole sneaking into her apartment slide, since Blitz is able to cheer her up with her little problem.
