Chapter 16: Making his Decision

The next morning, Jamie and Striker woke up and headed out. They started telling some funny stories.

"So you're telling me this Gabe guy, who happens to be the Gabriel, actually had the nerve to prank you," Striker said.

"Yup. And it was one of the lamer ones: a whoopee cushion during a meeting," Jamie answered.

"That's f*cking lame," he commented before replying, "Please tell me you did something about it."

"Oh, I did...in combat training," she smirked.

Striker laughed before stating, "You get more and more badass."

"Thanks," Jamie smiled then wondered, "What about you? Do you have any stories?"

He stopped smiling and sighed before telling her, "They're mostly about me killing my targets, so I don't think you'd wanna hear those."

She nodded as silence took place between them before she tried something else.

"What about any that you think deserved it?" she wondered.

Striker looked at her before saying, a bit harshly, "I don't get paid to think whether they deserved it or not; only to kill them. Why are you interested in that anyway? Last time I checked, angels don't believe in killing."

"We don't. We don't believe in a lot of things that are wrong. But there are some cases where 'an eye for an eye' is necessary," Jamie stated firmly.

"And who said that? The big guy?" he challenged.

"His Son actually," she corrected then added, "But He also said that you can do better by repaying it with something better like mercy. But as for 'an eye for an eye', I thought you would at least believe in that."

Striker thought about it for a minute before sighing again.

"I need to go clear my head. I won't be long," Striker said then walked off.

He was a little ways away from her when he started reflecting on everything between the demons who hired him and Jamie, who is his recent target. With any other target, he never felt conflicted about killing them, but with Jamie, it felt wrong to do so. He continued to reflect on everything, looking to see he was in an all-black area with a spotlight on him.

[STRIKER:]
"The day a door is closed
The echoes fill your soul
They won't say which way to go
Just trust your heart
To find what you're here for
Open another door
But I'm not sure anymore
It's just so hard"

He held his head in frustration before memories starting falling from above. They included his kills, the ones who hired him, his past, and moments with Jamie. Everything just crashed down around him before he started throwing the memories away or shooting.

"Voices in my head
Tell me they know best
Got me on the edge
They're pushing, pushing - they're pushing
I know they've got a plan
But the ball's in my hands
This time it's man to man
I'm driving, fighting inside
A world that's upside down
And spinning faster
What do I do now - without you"

He then held one of Jamie, smiling. He was about to throw it, but something was stopping him and he didn't know what, so he just put it down.

"I don't know where to go
What's the right team
I want my own thing
So bad I'm going to scream
I can't choose, so confused
What's it all mean
I want my own dream
So bad I'm going to scream"

He then saw targets with other victims and more employers, and he started shooting them, getting the middle every time. But when Jamie's appeared, he couldn't shoot it.

"I'm kicking down the walls
I gotta make them fall
Just break through 'em all I'm punching, crashing - I'm going to
Fight to find myself
Me and no one else
Which way, I can't tell
I'm searching, searching
Can't find the way that I should turn
I should turn right or left
It's... It's like nothing works - without you"

He then started running.

"I don't know where to go
What's the right team
I want my own thing
So bad I'm going to scream
I can't choose, so confused
What's it all mean
I want my own dream
So bad I'm going to scream

Yeah, the clock's running down
Hear the crowd getting loud
I'm consumed by the sound
Is it her? Is it love
Can the music ever be enough?
Gotta work it out, you can work it out
You can do it, you can do it"

He then saw Jamie, on her knees. She looked like she was surrendering. He approached her and aimed his gun at her head. But he soon stopped and helped her up. He kissed her forehead before she flew away.

"I don't know where to go
What's the right team
I want my own thing
So bad I'm going to scream
I can't choose, so confused
What's it all mean
I want my own dream
So bad I'm going to scream!
I don't know where to go
What's the right team
I want my own thing
I want my own thing!
I can't choose, so confused
What's it all mean
I want my own dream
So bad I'm going to scream"

He then screamed, eyes closed and arms out. When he opened them, he was back in the wasteland. It was then he realized what he needed to do. He was about to head back when he saw Jamie flying to him in a panic.

"Striker, are you okay?" she asked, landing in front of him.

"Yeah, I'm fine," he said.

"I heard you scream, so I was worried," Jamie told him.

"I was just frustrated about something, but I think I have my answer," Striker assured then added with a smirk, "It's nice to know you were worried about me."

"Yeah well, I felt horrible about bringing up some things that you didn't feel comfortable with and I didn't want to leave things like that, so I'm sorry," she apologized.

"No. You don't need to be. You made good points and I shouldn't have snapped at ya for it. So, I'm sorry," he said.

Jamie smiled and said, "It's okay."

"Anyway, we should keep going. We're almost there," Striker informed.

She nodded and they continued on their way.
