Chapter 12: Nice Team-Up
Striker and Jamie continued on, before heading up a mountain.
“I feel like we’re gonna hike up this mountain for nothing,” she commented.
“Not necessarily. Because of our temporary truce, I may have heard of an old portal out of here and part of the journey is up this mountain,” he mentioned.
“You couldn’t have mentioned that before?” Jamie pointed out.
“Would you have believed me?” Striker countered with a smirk.
She gave him an unsure look before saying, “Probably not. But what other choice would I have had?”
“Exactly,” he remarked before readying his blessed lasso.
He threw it in the air and it snagged a high branch.
“You do remember I can fly us up there, right?” Jamie reminded.
“Maybe. But I’d rather you not tire yourself out for when our temporary truce is over,” Striker smirked.
“Such a gentleman,” she returned it as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Then hold on tight, darling,” he said, wrapping a secure arm around her waist.
He then swung them up to one ledge before getting the rope back and swinging it to the next one. When they were halfway there, she noticed he was getting a little winded from it.
“Okay. My turn,” she stated, making her wings appear.
She then took Striker by his waist and took off for the top, making him hold onto her in surprise. She then landed at the top of the mountain, smirking as she made her wings disappear.
“You know I had it,” Striker told her.
“I have no doubt. But everyone gets tired every now and then. And I want you at your best when I kick your ass later,” Jamie remarked sassily.
“Alright, doll. Whatever let’s you sleep at night,” he replied, looking down at her while being only a few inches taller than her.
They couldn’t help almost getting lost in each other’s eyes before they heard a loud roar. They looked to see a huge cockroach-type monster coming out of a cave. The two smirked at each other.
“Call it practice for later,” he said, preparing his blessed weapons.
“Good. I also never liked cockroaches,” she returned, making her wings and sword appear.
The large cockroach tried to stomp on them, but he swung out of the way while she flew. Striker then shot at it in the eye, blinding it while Jamie cut off all its left legs, making it fall over. It struggled against them, but it then swatted Jamie away, making her fall. But then she was lassoed into Striker’s arms, her surprised face looking at his smirking one.
“Can’t have my competition be done for already,” he stated.
She rolled her eyes with a smile before they both resumed the fight. Then the creature shot its tongue out at grabbed Striker. He struggled against it as it brought him closer to its mouth. Then Jamie cut its tongue off, grabbed Striker, set him down, then landed on the creature’s head. Once he was freed, Striker lassoed its neck, trying to pull it to the ground.
“Time we end this,” Jamie stated.
She then raised her sword and shoved it in the creature’s head. It then fell to the ground with a huge thud. Jamie then headed to Striker, who got his rope back.
“You okay?” she asked.
“Fine, darling. Appreciate the save too,” he said.
“Can’t let my competition be done for already,” Jamie quoted him with a smirk.
Striker chuckled and told her, “Not bad. You also got some blood on your face.”
He then used his thumb to wipe off the green blood from her cheek, but let it linger for a minute. Jamie felt her breath get caught in her throat as Striker ended up caressing her cheek. But before anything could go further, they stopped.
He cleared his throat before telling her, “We better get a move on. We need to get on the other side of the mountain before dark.”
“You want me to fly us there?” she offered.
“Nah. After that fight, it’s better we save our strength,” Striker answered.
“Okay. Let’s head out then,” Jamie agreed.
They did so in silence.
